storybook

ivy claims
the dusty boards
run beneath my bed
beyond the dream
roots are taking hold
a somewhere
I’ve decided
is where I’ll spend
my nights

while keeping here
the best
of letting go

anxious breath
of moments left
of lifetimes there
we knew
calamine
and flannel
birch and bear
cold the ways of winter
let me hold you
closer dear

charcoal swans
are gathered
to the rise

silence
tells me everything
about the ways
you’ve come
and where you’ll go
when morning
shades my eyes

paths
of almost nothing
weave ambrosia
into light
and I am swept
with where you were
tonight

nearenough

what worlds
 we wandered years away
with nothing come
between
a star removed
of moments here –
as ancient ones
 to dream

of lives forgotten
plans undone –
by wishes laid aside
for destines
of fear –
a truth denied

what souls
await already –
with knowledge
of our will
they call us out –
and listen for us
still

on frigid nights
the air is charged
with stories from afar
a promise
of returning –
where we are

choosing yet
some other time –
another way we came
to know
before our knowing –
ten thousand
stars
by name

The way it was
as worlds became
a distant memory of a spark –
was slipped away
(as kiss to kiss).
Nothing left but light to dark.
Rivers rushed into the sea –
tempests chased the scent of rain.
Vessels formed of dying leaves –
where love has been
it falls again.

Voice so clear
though seldom heard –
words to silent breath ensued.
Before the place we were
is gone –
drums shall tell of longing (true).
Westward winds
to fan the same –
carries us beyond the wing.
Beyond the stories
never told
another comes
(don’t mean a thing).

I was here –
I know for sure
but not for long (as years define).
I wrote of something
I can’t say
was but a fire – that fainting line.
Never knew –
no luck with names –
was started somewhere else
(my soul).
I often wonder what will be
remained of warmth
when I am cold.

To feel again
the same (as now)
mesmerized by dancing flame
sleepless nights to wonder (still)
from where we were
and why we came.
There’s no way to know
for sure –
when life is passed into the mist.
Who will speak
with honesty –
of love we knew – this sweet abyss.

A kinder tale –
I can’t recall
but surely there was more (to find).
Fever burned forgotten lives
when came anew
my eyes to blind.
As yesterdays
(a watermark)
faded soft beneath the glow.
Forever dreams
in memories –
a spark ignited
long ago.

gather me
surrender me
lest I come again
to blossom
where your path
is willed to go –
life is where
I love the most
rhyme within
my words
more than faith –
a part of this
I know

for one day
I’ll discover –
the way was come
for me
knew my name
before the heavens set
held by breath
a fragile soul –
winds were waiting still
an evermore
awaits without
regret

of late –
I’m reminded
of years already gone
places I can touch
as would I please
dream beyond
my sleeping –
as one with I the night
wills my tired body
to my knees

sitting
now the silence
where sunlight
yesterday
fell against
a broken window pane
warmed a region
of my heart
thought was meant
for chill –
fires burn
despite
the pouring
rain

with gratitude
my soul becomes
remembrance of a name –
the taking in
til I am filled –
a place
of silent
fame

to resurrect
these mysteries –
much more than I can say
a truth denied
the words as yet
shall ring
some other day

. . .

memories
are sewn to me
petals on my sleeve
a song –
a music
sweeter than the night
proof when morning finds me
drifting back
from dreams –
nestled in a sweet
embrace of light

comeagain names
already known
maple
rose
and sparrow –
called to us
reunion of the saints

I can see the other side

listen
do you hear
the memory of wind
a trust of almost everything
we know
echoes of any ancient crest
winging o’er the pines
remembrance of a valley
far below

silence
do you feel me
whispers of your heart
a moment of submission
rattles still
as melody
of mountain streams
rivers nearly dry –
now are come
our letting to reveal

story
might we gather
around the sacred page –
to speak aloud
of times
we wandered through
breathless as beginning
leaves of winters past
fragile break –
as grace we fell into

listen
do you hear
the memory of wind

stories

TO THE DESCENDANTS
OF THE GREAT EUROPEAN TRIBES
by Clarissa Pinkola Estes
(with permission)

If you would look into the last room
of the starry night,
there are powers there with names:
Tannenbow, Valdar, Yaga, and others.
They are your ancestors,
they sneeze with all the waiting for you.

They want to give you sword-making,
show you hidden ore amongst earth’s gasses.
They, like you, are a dust of glitter and light.
The names, the names. . .
call them by name,
for they have gone shadowy
from lack of your remembering,
from lack of your love.

Your Deep Earth Drum still lives,
though more more faint now.
Down there they have a theater waiting,
one that is lit by storms;
it takes only a name to start it.

Some firesides, the good princes show up;
the blind one who steals earrings
during the night shows up;
the wise one who sings souls into Nod;
the long-chin who concocts sweets,
and herbs for healing,
who lays huts of boughs for grieving,
and extracts her cost.

The one who bleeds gold,
breathes there.
The one who releases the bright,
burning fire arrow, lives there.
They are all there.
Your ancestors live!

Quick! the names,
the names. . .
call them by name. . .
before they lose all water
and die.

~*~

The charge of the storyteller is more than one of weaving,
reciting, entertaining.  It is a remembering of the start and a perception
of no ending.  It is the past brought forward into the now,
where it is made sense by those who have waited to be a part.

There is truth deeper than your bones, where the story
lives.  There, the proof of other dreams is feeding your own.

when lost
my way
of knowing –
as purpose fell into
a something worth revealing
– there was you

storied
by resistance –
left somewhere behind
a place to go
I’m going
yet to find

words
to draw you closer
a breath we shared
one day –
clouds were drifting
pulling us
away

get me back
I’ve come before
to know of this
somehow
the way we loved
another time
tis now

how much
our forgiving
for words yet unsaid
and a place we remember
come round
as a sweet recollection
of familiar returned
– a house on a hill
falling down

a buzz on the fields
a way through the weeds
and somewhere
– they miss us
the same
pieces are kept
of the leaving we took
 places and graces
and names

tho deeper the will
to discover the path
was ours
from beginning to end
love shall return us
the ways
were come –
to remember
this moment again

silhouettes pry
the secrets untold
from the heart of the storybook
teller I’m told

there are places
forgotten
sometimes it is said
when the words
are come easy
to press round my bed

and rain pours her tears
to my pillow (my soul)

who will remember
I wonder sometimes
what is lost
in the leaving –
the growing to old

as rings on the willow
a promise was made
and nursed by the darkness
returning our light
silver blue shadows
flash to and fro –
as a sign of our saving
wings touch the night

as a dream just beginning
a story so sweet
is gone with the dawning
a silent retreat

from the trust in another
was wonder to know
when leaned into love –
paper wings
letting go
