I left my car behind in the parking lot, strolling in the mid-morning wonder that is April in Tennessee. The flowers are stretching and all around, blossoms adorn the trees where just a month ago, ice formed and birds fought for glistening red berries.
I juggled a cup of a coffee, my purse, and a book bag. But then I saw it – an almost perfect nest balanced upon a limb at the edge of the lot. I smiled and took two more steps before I stopped, put all my stuff on the ground, and dug my phone from the side pocket. I stepped a little closer and noticed there was a silent vigil on the nest, a sweet bird but an arm’s length away.
I took a couple of pictures, and another step. As I did, the bird moved a bit closer to the nest, as if to say, “be careful there, you crazy woman; these be the babies of wing’ed dreams”…..
It is indeed a sweet sweet life we are privileged to share. ❤

someone made mention
of rings on the table
habits worn clean
to the bone
a rusted out latch
keeps no one from leaving
a whispered reminder
of reasons
to stay
where the fences
need mending
and water runs cool
sprung from a river
two miles ‘neath the porch
we watched the sun rise
another
one day
when spoke of intention
promise undone
by a change in the
weather
warm cotton gowns
I dared not replace
with the pretense of love
the essence of summer
left on the line
and a glass
of the best I knew how
. . .

once was
a man
I never did know
my daddy
before
he fell into love
whiskey
and fifty two cards
more than most
a heart split apart
by the last
get me back
to a place
not for keeping
returned me
to find
forever had never
been lost
all that was mattered
to the ways
I had come
without need
for a map
or a star
wished upon
. . .

forgive of me
a time before
when leaving broke
my heart
before the spring
when as a blossom
burst
to decorate your garden
with perfume
once was mine
before the chase
of dew into the light
pardon me
this lowly salve
of choices to confuse
emotion
spent
and what for love
was done –
as places of your dreaming
where I am unafraid
of longing meant to soothe
this emptiness
as quiet to
an awkward stance
thought you knew me when
by storms awoke
remembered not
my name
forgive of me
this dreadful verse
kept my soul from staying –
the taking back
of love
I meant to give
. . .

the wind
yet remembers
the weight of my willing
another I was
but a girl – only ten
crickets and
tadpoles
blackberry winters
barefoot as
lifetimes
recalled to me then
spirits
carry me
home by the river
out past the waiting
once promised
for us
a truth
undecided
as roads without name
an echo of someone
I used to be –
loved
. . .
