sweetersummers

when summer rains
are drifted
further than the moor –
into the place
where night
grows shorter still

into a favored lullaby
passion pleads replay –
silent notes
are written
as balms to yesterday

purple blue horizons
are feathered
past our stead –
as early now the autumn
twilight glows

against the torch forgotten
– a starting over come
wings to paint in lilac
o’er the sun

souvenirs of living
stories catch the breeze –
as daylight glistens softly
on the lawn

angels dance
atop the bloom –
winter kisses swarm
pouring light into us
– shine the ways
to home

. . .

memory of ways ~

here

of a moment
I’m uncertain –
where choices came undone
days dissolved to years
so close –
this far

of somewhere else
forgotten by –
the distance worn between
will – no more forsaken
than the memory
of ways –

and houses where
the chimney fell
twice that awful winter
windows broken
boarded
by the want to gather in

and huddled we
together
in the space
where secrets fell
trading lies
for mysteries
stories fitting still

to loving curves
shadows pulled away
by evermore
– murmurs

of redemption
echoes burning bright

warmth –
a fragile trading
of all we came
to love

. . .

rings ~

round about

in the space where once
a longing –
was nursed
a hungry cat
and edges there were left
to tell the world
of where the end
was ending –
who would tend the grass
and where the towels
were folded
with the grey

a rocking chair
and angry rings
to curse an ugly table
a crystal bowl
would hold your habits
well –
reminders of another
took my breath
for supper –
turned the bed
and never said
a thing

verses read
all over –
some I can’t pretend
are meant to hold
another fool
as I
forgotten to a season
passed me through
November –
cooled my brow
and left my longing
fire

. . .

almost ~

beyond

once before
you almost knew –
I could see it in your eyes
familiar as the sunlight
to your face
warmest realization
of places come and gone
miles from here –
another time
and space

immortal truths
to resurrect –
mere moments more or less
tho somewhere now –
we weave in destiny
searching through the rubble
for pieces almost gone
– threads are pulled
across and back
for me

almost once
and even now –
I wonder just how close
the stars were realigning
to our will
e’er tides be turned
that old blue moon
watching yet the same
ages passed –
forever
standing still

. . .

blue blade ~

lexington_2012

grieve not
the last blue blade
of Kentucky
as years
where the rain fell upon
the reasons for staying
outnumber the stars
– weight to the heart
unconfessed

by the saying aloud
a giving to name
of ways now grown over
as one time I knew –
was proof of the falling
when all that was left
was an echo of days
gone between

breathing
returns me –
as seasons to home
will sit me a sun
at the edge of the sky
pastures made new
by the burning away
– rivers made wild
by our tears

. . .

breath before the breaking ~

sleepyheaven

of old regrets
the tired tell –
and spin their stories over
whittled now the cedar
to the bone
liars lean
into the night –
seeking home in shadows
dreamers dream
and crush their way
to dawn

of sorrows here
the past is torn –
a breath before the breaking
assurance of the places
we begin
as first the whisper falters –
an echo shall become
crossed as stars
the night –
to burn again

. . .

just this far ~

surelythis

of places
just this far away –
as the northern edge
of an eastern night
where kentucky knew
of our verse
somehow –
did you know me then
as you know me
now

as a secret path
out beyond the night –
and a long way
back
where there never was
but a soul to free and a will to learn
what would come
undone –
in the turning

an empty field
brushes gold somewhere
as the leaning back
comes to moving on –
will our truth
be known –
to places here
will our names be hard
to remember

of another time
as our journey was –
with a sleeve of maps
folding back
in time
– a needle strong
knew the songs we’d trade
– were the stars
burned out
 by a wish we made

. . .

waited ~

oncewasme

purple gauze
and great big plans
incense burning hotter –
for ways into the past
we’d never come

sworn to meet
though who knows how
or when the time
for leaving
the universe
remembered us
this way

leaning long
outside the door
offering surrender
I fall again –
whene’er I say
your name

gypsy moth
is swimming
in echoes we’ve forgotten
light is balanced
soft against my sin

then as now
a moment here –
and how was I to ever
think another lost
was never gone

lie again
within my reach –
swirl in day old coffee
forever once
we waited –
another breath to come

. . .

fire flys ~

beyond the pines

roll me down
against the stones
float my soul
to heaven
turn my eyes
to stary skies
most have never seen

I’ve heard a few
were painted
to ancient chapel walls
and wondered I
of fools
to never know

a blacker veil
wraps the edge
of city lights for reaching
diamond fields
unnoticed by the sun

fireflies
forgotten
by a wish that fell
one summer –
chasing dreams of magic
– lightning
to the ground

. . .

silence

for moments
I have traveled –
lost my way
sometimes –
and swam in silver depths
beyond the pond

wishes of reflection
as streamers curled the night
– pardon me
the way they spelled
your name

open arms
and we began
somewhere east of eden
a blanket made
of flannel – crossed
with pale

once or more
the lying left
in curses by the fence
as tresses braided wheat
into a smile

hand me downs
and where I’ll be
should e’er the taking
bring you –
home another way
forgotten truce

maps betrayed
for tracing –
down every rural road
– spare the wheel
and let your soul
decide
