was there
once before
a story unencumbered
a part became of all I know
becoming not the end
of two or more
ten thousand miles
of houses barely standing
weathered paint
and not much more to keep
than hands
together knitted
round a time
was almost lost
where now
the news of leaving
fills the town
with worry for the breaking
and hearts to split apart
nights beyond
the eager reach of sleep
stars were lined
along the sil….
tucked beneath the lace
dreaming not the same
as of you now –
blue the smoke of cedar
rolling down the hill
from places known for stone
and daffodil
remembered
would it matter
just how simple
we were then –
when given words
but chosen yet to kiss
before the day a shimmer
of breath
above the still
– a life recalled
could never end
that way

. . .

Author’s Note – A week ago this Sunday, my mother and I took a drive into the ‘old country’, along rivers where once we swam and roads not the same.  We visited the cemetery where so many of my ancestors rest – between a pasture, a (cold cold) river and a valley.  This house stands not far away, near another cemetery.  My mother told me of the people who once lived beneath these aching timbers, when this was majestic place, filled with stories only started and rest far away.

pullmehome

of moments
some unworthy
I’ve forgotten
where they went
roads I thought
might get me back
to home
loosened by a memory
kept aside the same
words where none
would matter
anyway

how it was
and where I left
these pieces of my soul –
to question
who would notice
what was gone
dreaming
has a way about
of bringing us around
along the road
we wandered
yesterday

how long
and for a while
it seems I might remember
these paths –
though so familiar
are disguised
as something more
a moment rare –
a time I thought we knew
the way was bright
and we
becoming one
journeyed in the sunlight
across on boards
of clay
felt the shift of worlds
beneath us
closed our eyes
swaying
leaning into love
recalling once again
the feel
of home

I’m the road
made sure
for coming home –
the taking back of time
words where none
would fit
the same as mine
from here
the waiting restless
as stars
again align
I’m more than once
you might have dreamed
– thought
removed of rhyme

gather me
remember me
beyond this sacred
afterglow
lay me down
beneath the night –
another loved you so
in keeping
let your sweet embrace
replace my will –
my need to go
til all of you
returns to me
as all of love
I know

a moment
(forever)
was the last time
(the first)
looking thru eyes
the same (still)
as mine
seeing me clearer
than any
(save one)
silence
(longing) to fill
hands falling
tenderly
glistening
raindrops
reasons and seasons
for times
(we remain)
understood
as a sigh on our lips
(amen)
remember
(forever was) once
the echo of bliss
released
to my heart
ashes
(rivers)
nights (in the kitchen)
scattering whispers
let us begin
the leaving (worn bare
by our living)
all is forgiven
time grieves (for none)
the trust that was love
(a moment)
our all

knowmenow

of late
I’ve grown cold
to the ways of the world
bruised by the
easing of time

subdued by the splendor
of dreamless
intent
names rubbed away
by pieces of light

fixed to my window
by lacey white sparrows
winged past the
curtains
one night
as I lay

silent beside
the remembrance
of more
cursing the lessons
of love come before

a moment inclusive
of always

hands
O how lovely
they loved

thisclose

for times
I never took the time
days I let
get by
nights I slept
beyond the reach
of dreams
love I held
a moment long
candles blossom bright
paper plates
as graces
have become
a hundred years
from getting back
eighteen more
than then
pages bent
against me in the back
roads I know
from walking home
slower
than the sun

seasons not
the heavier
for counting

whereandIwas

where comes
the assurance
nothing is lost
though winters seem longer
by far
than the first time
I knew you
lines barely crossed
a road wearing
somewhere
dirty and red
neath the night
I was waiting
to carry you home
with stories of always
and stars
in my hair

savingme

of moments
I’ve known
a path through
the tears
a faint recollection
of days unto years
poetry carved
as rings to
the wood
of seasons and reasons
tethered to place
come as a lover
of longing embrace
as nights without
slumber
whispers
to lace

silence the same
as forgetting

some other
another
of dreaming I knew
the weight of remember
was passing me
through
noonday and were you
to hold me
like this
as a moment of always
burned to a kiss
lest living
come easy
as light on the morn
as wake to the keeping
was love
to discern

where'erIgo

what name
was once you called to me
echoes o’er the storm
a distant light
unshaken by these memories
of home
a part of all that mattered
is forgiveness settled round
in tireless waves
the ways we were
before again abound
the sweetest blossoms
scattered
as breath in silence still
remains of wishes
traded
another place to fill
a lullaby forgotten
though not for comfort lent
as days I lost
ten thousand more between
counted from a distance
roads and stars
the same
paths converge
within the fault
of dreams
