westward back
to take my wagon –
twice as far I walked before
held in place by recollection
shadows rubbed
to rings I wore

married first
and then decided
where my love would lay me down
kept the best of wedding wishes
matching cups
and cotton gowns

smiles put back
with suitcase packing
set a course and drove away
once or twice
the rearview winking –
asking more
than room to stay

but never this –
the message failing
broken gate
and twilight tears
whiskey rings
to stain my table –
slept the night
beside my fears

where and when
the curtains moving
one more dance –
to save my own
as shadows of forever
shifting –
back the way I came
to home

. . .

pieces everywhere ~

take my rings
and buy a sunset
souvenirs of yesterday
sell the bed –
to give me heaven
flannel ships to sail away

brighter stars
beyond the ceiling
told me once
their every name –
take the silks
but the spare the story
softer now – the dying flame

promise sweet
as monday morning
turn the mattress –
write it down
where we’ll be
when next remembered –
love we made
of moments now

trade my locks
for winter roosters –
sell the skates
from down the hall
leave the door
a bit more open
lest I miss you after all

of consequence
and one time leaving
there the empty shelves
are bared
sunlight stills
the morning after –
kept in pieces everywhere

thought you knew
I’d wait another
lifetimes more without the proof
two steps backward
into shadows –
spare the love
but take the truth
…

fortunes more
than e’er I knew
or lines caressed my fingers
when sat inside
a candleglow –
as someone spelled
my name

aloud
was fate returning
as whispers – sinner – saint
as morning when the night
is settled ’round

and I with want
for more than this –
more than matching dishes
and acres
where the wheat
resolved to grow

hand-me-downs
and day old bread
who will miss me sunday
when down the pew
the plates are passed
again

smiling back
in buttoned lace –
boots I should have traded
but kept apart
were pieces
of their worth

give me grain
to grow the sun
wrap your arms around me
spin me neath the willow
supper time

drive me back
o’er dusted roads
and sing the ones familiar –
of destinies I swore
were never done

hold against your beating
the hand to fit
your hand –
scored by fate
as fortune
you’ve become

…

two of hearts ~

forgiven now
the sweetest cut
stitches formed of blood
the curs’ed class
of circumstance
and will that never would

forgiven
clashing angels
and nights they envied me
a moment of surrender
to sheets of destiny

forgotten trail
of breadcrumbs
across this lonely floor
were left by grace
another day
would bring you to my door

forget the past
I have no pride
would keep me from your shade
or mornings to awaken
by loving – unafraid

forgiven now
the truth undone
by life –
this split apart
reality made dearer still
than e’er the two
of hearts

as mercies spilled
to pages blank –
dreams to populate
with stories
of tomorrow –
forgiven now the wait

. . .

unremembered ~

for all I am
the more I will
of places yet I’ve never seen
held within this fragile beating
lives beyond
the reach of dream

for more than time
as thrice discovered
there I’ll find you
waiting still
held with promise I remember
every mystery
revealed

of moments held
so few for keeping
more than nights
for slumber come –
wishes spent on falling embers
stir the starlight
into dawn

for every now
my past was fated
as memories survived the fall
whispers of another sleeping
lifetimes since
I scarce recall

of choices made
some other choosing
morning falls against my place
names rewritten
someone misses
where I loved – I live
always

…

I’ve known this road
for more than miles ~
though never
went much further
than the county line
a sweeter rhyme
than ever you and I

a stand of pine
that keeps your name
with mine

hold me back
within these ways
I’ve come to need their
heaven ~
moments here the same
as once you were

a penny lost
to tell your tales ~
reason keeps me guessing
as hands to trace
the places
that I love

late night chats
and take me backs ~
wool and lace
and flicker
chapters split apart
and sewn again

lilac faded flowers
ribbon in the trees
as boots beneath
the window
comfort me

spare the rest
this time to be ~
I need not words
to listen
for promise
might be gone
before the night

speak not long
of hanging on ~
but let your truth
be kisses ~
worn into the morning
of my rise

…

grounded ~

forgive me now
this coming back
to find an understanding
of where I stood
e’en now the ground is warm
the barn is leaning further
than I thought it would in May
but now ~ so clearly now
I see the moon

forgotten yet
the pain to leave
a tear-stained sunday morning
roads to walk
alone and back again
just beyond the church bells
ring ~
vows not worth the sermon
echoing of words
were tasted new

take me now
before the first of
winter’s velvet stillness
and nights
when still I burn
with thoughts of you
cellar doors
and broken steps ~
thirteen miles to nowhere
lines to run both ways
are never true

say it ~
say it softly
speak my name
aloud
murmur in the dark
so I might hear
and know of times uncertain
as rain between the stars ~
aware of other times
you held me near

whisper as another
time has passed into
everafter promised me a place
I always knew
would come again
a house without a door ~
windows facing south
to hide the barn

lessons ~

this morning
the driveway was covered
with letters
held a bit long by the sun
reminders of others
sweet as october
and dreams kept
for seasons to come

hands were unfolded
open and anxious
to catch every tear
as they fell
mystical dance
of reason returning
words without meaning
(or none we could tell)

shades of a lifetime
pressed to a moment
bound into pages
of memory wrote
sealed with a kiss
as ten thousand others
would wait us for passing
as maple to smoke

as poetry dried
by inkstain to wishes
thought gone the way of the wind
infinite proof
that love will sustain us
out past the places ~
we wander again

forgotten somehow
the seasons since passed
snowflakes and junebugs
are gathered to light
warmed by a day
(another we came)
haunted by leaves
kept real by the night

swirling (these gifts)
of red burned to gold
lessons we learned of
surrender ~
comfort me now
as life spills the ground
let go
let love ~
remember

…

one ~

how deeply were roots
weaved into granite ~
briar or bruise
(beyond them to care)
cleaved to their kin
as lovers ill-fated ~
unintended this soil to share

slept through the night
dreaming of water ~
as visions of truth brought the thirsty awake
cruel and cramped (extinctive survival)
sworn to each other ~
a living to make

but fell to the midst
a lovely companion
burst from a seed (unassumed)
gentle retort of rocky intention
when met with the blade ~
of destiny’s bloom

how proudly she sways
the daylight to beckon
a moment to shine on her face
blushing umbrella of infamous fare ~
is held ever sure
in the briar’s embrace

fearless their push
to the edge of forsaken
moved as the night to alter their view ~
of all that she is
would lose in becoming
companion to these
unfortunate few

see how she smiles
for those without blossom
drawn to their beauty
(as only she knows)
sharing the light
as one with the meadow ~
tho miles from its bosom
she grows

…

to be sure ~

Of places remained ~
as fate to becoming
this one (of so many)
held part of the dream
From a sense of belonging
were we found to be treasure ~
and knew (as we know)
of lives passed between

Of memories shaded
death becomes futile ~
as babies reciting
their stories of earth
Of distance once more ~
on roads so familiar
rivers o’erflowing with wondrous birth

Of moments no longer
the ways through the past
or flowers forsaken
to seed
When holding as one
to life just beginning ~
as mother and father
our children indeed

The last of illusion
was starting to see ~
as eyes worked as one in the dark
As breath of the greater
in coming thus far
as journeys back through ~
one soul to embark

Of truth reconstructed
from feather and blade ~
water washed over by stone
From dreams of the many
one night
shall return ~
with lessons and letters
from home

In beginning another
from places forgotten ~
were parts of the whole
without memory
of more
Of time when for nothing ~
the rest we’ll remember
awaiting the one
when beginning
before
