no different the ache
of eternity passing –
stolen the name we gave
to a dream
warmed to our heart
as one with our beating –
knew as we knew
of the waiting to be
stirs still in spirit
the place of becoming
strains as a breath on the night
drinks from the cup
we pass with our kisses
shines to the heavens
as a moment
of light

Author’s Note ~ Written for a friend and his wife, who were expecting
their first child in October. Instead, they now strain to fill the silence
left by words unspoken – grief that cannot be mentioned by name.

gather the crops
and lead me to pasture –
long woolen coats
and hats on the nail
sing me our song
to remind me of breathing
take me to meeting
where the creek
dries to bone

walk with me now
through the pain of becoming
what I feared most
when we parted that day –
a longing to fill
and woods without conscience –
carved our initials
much deeper
than ache

some faraway
somewhere –
the geese are returning
spread ‘cross the dark
til we can’t see the night
and fashioned their moon
from something
less shining –
was a moment we held
to forever this way

scatter my bones
as proof of submission –
but tell not the others
I was destined to fall –
read every word
aloud at my passing –
warm
let your hands
to my heart fold around

to hold this – the last
of my fragile intentions –
will you worry
for places I’m not
when darkness remembers
the breath of surrender –
long woolen coats
and geese on the lam

of butterflies ~

beyond this breath
before our death –
returns a brighter dawn
lives can change
the universe responds
caught in recollection
a reflection weaved of faith
fleeting as a sigh
beneath the wake –
ethers churn
as mountains move
much closer to the storm
spirits caught in shadow
shift the light
planets move
and souls confess
to other lives remembered
time is lost –
we dream
of butterflies

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ

Author’s Note ~ There is a Native American legend that says, If you have a secret wish, capture a butterfly and whisper your wish to it.  Since butterflies cannot speak, your secret is ever safe in their keeping. Release the butterfly, and it will carry your wish to the Great Spirit, who alone knows the thoughts of butterflies. By setting the butterfly free, you are helping to restore the balance of nature, and your wish will surely be granted.

The universe responds.

if e’er I be forgotten
yet found within your words
a broken wing
a favored verse ~
a breathing almost gone
when brought me back
to find you ~
brought me back
to fill this need
a love reserved for saving
will you save
choices when the light
grows dim ~
fight when others run
give to me
the beat that is your own

when death resolves
to claim me
with not a thought to breath –
and whispers of a longing I was given
me before –
and knew I not
the ways to come
or how the path would wind
beneath the shade of laurel
beyond the reach of light
and I for you
awaiting this
as promised (times) before –
though without right to reason
get me back
I need you more
than yesterday reminded me
the warmth
that is your touch
ashes swirl as memory –
secrets slept beneath the porch
never thought to pray
wasn’t meant to leave –
even now
I hold your name
to the safety of my musing –
faraway
of kindred flame
belonged to me
the story you were writing
(shall I tell)
of where we were
when night was come
I loved you
(loved you well)
forgotten not the heavens
I saw waking in your eyes –
was all I knew
when begged again
of love (before I die)

white (imperfect) ~

the rosebush
planted by the creek
has flourished on its own –
from where we were
I’ve wandered back
across the years alone –

to wait for you
(I knew you’d come)
how sweet
these ties (to bind)
~ a field
of budding clover
a place untouched by time

tho I won’t tell –
I will not trade
let the truth go down with me
til I am buried
white (imperfect)
beneath the evergreens

again to writhe –
in slumber’s lair
uncertain what life means
e’er silence
taint my eager lips
and roses steal
my dreams

better still ~

better that the dream
be gone ~
than held for me
one moment more
that breath should heave
one final sigh
(a whisper of surrender)
e’er I would taste
its sweetness
beyond the winter freeze ~
and share my love of graces
with poppies in the spring

better that the seeds
be tossed
to highways (not yet taken)
wed in painted canyons
gift to pastures
white with frost ~
places where the rain
was fallen softly
rolled into the ocean
and sailed
in search of me

better that my soul
remember
what of beauty lasted ~
and where each wonder
lingered (did I know)
with every kindness
(I’ve returned)
as kisses from the grave ~
voices cling to silence
(down below)

better that I wait
the sunset glowing in the night ~
promise made
was never mine to keep
(windows glowing bright)
across the sands,
another savior –
where I was lost (and found)
~ where is my love

better I believe
in everafters (surely come)
eternities to wait
(so tenderly)
where meadows bloom
from ashes – and sparrows
wing from words –
paradise is where I am
and better still
for me

spinning ~

I dreamed of
kings and kingdoms,
camelot and merlin –
legend forged by magic
and desire.
I dreamed of knights
approaching –
might find this maiden
waiting –
for all this everafter
might inspire.

I dreamed of pearls
and whiskey –
the lazy side of summer,
news from home –
across and down
the same.
I dreamed of
picket fences,
a porch to wrap around us –
closing time, and
calling stars by name.

I dreamed of distant
highways, were made for
this horizon –
a destination
yet to be revealed.
I dreamed of clay
and coyotes,
a hand to fit me walking –
miles beyond to wonder
how love feels.

I dreamed of boots
and perfume,
a light across the meadow –
boxes filled with treasure
I loved best.
I dreamed of
golden mornings,
a winding path to take me,
back to the arms –
where dreaming
I shall rest.

a long way from home ~

was another time
tho miles between and far from home
a winter’s night
where blue and grey were stood
in battle stance
kept awake too long
a chilly air
pierced at once by hope
and song
back and forth
where lines were drawn
and boys pretended
men to be
listened to the one
then to another

sang and grieved
but never thought
(for long) to leave
tho many knew
tomorrow would become the end
twas just as this
and meant to be
that others would soon learn
where then the first would fire
(the last would fall)
the loser ill forgotten
to the winner’s sword
no words could say
but writers dared to tell us
the battle told with
drum and violin

til one at last
the two would join
along that length of fence
before the river rose
to take their blood
blue and grey were warmed
by songs of home

In the battle of Stones River Battlefield (1862), 80,000 soldiers met at the river to fight for home and honor. Blue and grey were scattered amid the trees. It was New Year’s eve, and music rose from the drums from one camp and then another –

Yankee Doodle,
Dixieland….

The night rolled on as back and forth they played, knowing the morn would come for many as the last. Around midnight, it is said that the Yankee troops began to play “Home Sweet Home”. Almost immediately, the Rebel band joined as did the voices of those who had come to bear arms.

For a while, no longer were there shades of blue and grey,
just men – fathers, sons, and grandsons – children and old men – the best of us miles away from home.

forever still ~

when twilight comes
quietly as longing
to the dark
would grieve for you
as you might never know
wept the tears
you wish you’d seen
another day
when sorrow begged
the world from you
to differ

how it is – a moment
passed so easy
suspended there
a pretense of the truth
as cold the silver
crevices
dust between the names
sleep to separate
the kisser from the kiss
forgiveness from the one
who longs to hear

forever still
the silence seems so loud
eternities to pass
before we meet
breathe aside this mossy
veil – that I might
understand
words to never
wet the lips
keep us now apart
