I hang on words
verbs and adjectives
that distill time’s crazy hold
on my life
souvenirs kept
in spiral bound notebooks
with tiny locks
so easily broken
like dreams
or promises carried forward
from past generations
a chapter neatly finished
but always incomplete
tonight I unplug the yellow bulbs
strung to seasons of evergreen
sons of the tree
that rose silently one year
in splendid happiness
crystalising the summit of my childhood
the night you disappeared
and distress replaced your love
too young then
I neglected to listen to your words
thinking surely you’d be around
to speak them hundreds of other times
and now –
older than you were that year
I’ve forgotten
even the sound of your voice

sworn
to believe
the seasons have passed –
how many ten thousands
are stilled by this one
rolled into years
without reason
to count
how many forevers
this sun

as legions
forgiven –
to lie at her heart
soft in the shadow of still
faded as cotton
gathered to light –
are songs from lips
ever sealed

yet
when the morning
stands from the dark
silence – their voices
abound
dew glitters sweet
on petal and pine –
as passion wells up
from the ground

deeper

of scars
all but faded
the beginning is lost –
no reminder is left
of the pain
of stories we started
forgotten us now
were given us choice
to remain

more than a few
are sealed within lies –
a place I was going
when fell by the way
given to truth
I thought would oblige
souvenirs kept
with the blade

crisscross
remember –
threads into silk
moments reweaved
by their coming apart
letters have worked their way
into skin –
scars running clean
to the heart

asyouwish

of meaning unspoken
I was a dreamer –
dwelling on words yet unsaid
rolled as a quilt
and stored on the dresser
with mysteries waiting
unread

the start of forever
and I would be willing
to trade every moment til then
for one more beginning
another ascending
were heaven decided
again

by the touch
of the sunlight
warm through the window
moonlight burnt
by the trees
loving regard
for something made over
and living to bend
as we please

a distant horizon
much more than a promise –
were reason
a truth unrevealed
as rivers to carry
a heartbeat to ferry
passion remembers us
still

kept by tomorrow
as blessings to borrow –
forever – as will
to allow
pressed as the morning
against my returning
– tis there I’ll find you
somehow

part of all ~

falling

was here
and for a moment
eternity was passed
as light into the memory
of day

forgotten
where the curtains hung

who would tell them when
or where we loved
some other might have been

to stretch across
forgiven all
the ways
by which we came
with want to speak
of treasures
when gathered there
the same

who will know
who will say –
what proof we leave behind
are part of all we’ve
come to know

– awaiting us
to find

. . .

story to betray ~

lost
the will
for looking back
a path o’ertook by vine
as strangeness there
forgotten us –
whittles at my time
with never been
and waiting then
the story to betray
when touch was more
than touching –
loving more than lace

I should have known
I never did –
love carries me the same
as lives I lived
somewhere before –
the best of me
remains
belonged to you
held you close –
nights I had no say
of what would last
the morning light
to take my breath
away

of castles dark
or meadows smoke –
now muted into blue
in silent sweet surrender
another time I knew
the words you said
before you spoke –
an echo crushes still
the strength of love
from one –
the next forever
shall reveal

. . .

all I have ~

sweptinto

of winter still
the summer dreams
of nights in softest flannel
whispers folded secrets
warmed below

lazy morning shadows
said – I will again
take of these
my everything
of all I have to bloom

breathless
wakes the golden –

pressing down the dawn
clinging to a blossom
with memory
of snow

. . .

returntome

beyond the still
of sorrow –
eternal bleeds the red
discovered as another
perfect rise –
forgiven us
the getting on
of running us away
beaches press
a once remembered shore
feathers float
as suffering –
was here we meant
to lay
tears are flowing now –
a wiser sun
than e’er could be
forsaken
by the breaking
passed between
– the river rolls us
backward
to the rain

. . .

fleeting

they’ve given place
a time I knew –
and ashes to the meadow
some nights
the wind blows backward
through the gale
reminding me of somewhere else
I stood a moment
longer –
and listened for a truth
I’ll never tell

for all you know
I wonder still –
how much of me is gone
the way of wish and reason sweet –
a path forgot to home
the same as when
we lingered
then –
with will for destiny

dreams
that I’ve stopped dreaming
a place somewhere
of me

would e’er the signs
be sworn to show –
or verses spilled just right
rhyming rules
in silent pools –
tis there I hold you tight
would circumstance
another chance
where’er our stars be crossed

ashes float
on northern streams –
alight with wishes lost

. . .

burn away ~

october

summer spares
the sleepy earth
carried as the spring
– was passed one day
between the noon and five
brighter my
illusion
of almost anything
I might have said
last sunday
as goodbye

made worse
for ever giving
what it took so long to say
the fields may burn away
beneath my bed
time has nothing
meant to keep –
begs us love or go
the winds
are sure to find me far
the last –
the best I know

there’s more than ache
in hurting –
more soul within the song
tho no one hears
but me –
don’t make it wrong
leaving left
to one last fate
– one more hold me near
the past is nothing
worth
the keeping
here
