Walking beneath stars at dusk,
doves coo (quietly) to one another,
songs only they (of dove wisdom) can understand…

and I wonder at their (selfless) lament…
What (can they whisper that) I do not know?

What invisible mysteries
do the waves instill — crashing against the cliffs…
(who can tell me)
what secrets the rain confesses to the violet dawn,
is its suffering (made) lesser
by the crimson sunset?
Is there a place (we’ve yet to find)
that waits under evergreen canopies of silence…
atuned to (the cry of) rainbows…
or is that for the poet (alone) to know….

Ten thousand paper birds
(without the heritage to) become feathers…
but still they drfit…tangled not (by expectations)
no tears for tiny fingers
(that pried) their inanimate bones…

they’ve yet to understand
they cannot soar…
and (so) they do…

Can the only secret (worth discovery) be
that a simple morning song…
bellowed atop (a twist of) cooper line
is more (precious) than a symphony of perfectly managed notes…

and that love needs no reason (to be)
(undone by questions — why not)
beyond a moment’s (deliberate) pause…..

of the stories I could tell
would you believe them every one
or worry for my senses –
direction in the dark

of things I’ve known
would love be lost –
to places I remember
as shadows worn by wings
an early moon

silence bids
a kingdom come
of ancient oak and cypress –
whistling of rivers
tipping softly out the sea

as fiddles played
of crickets cradled
safe against the morning
born to love
each new refrain –
will dance away with me

as more than one
to sorrows sworn
broken souls forsaken –
as roses blooming
neath the steps
were essence to ascend

til quiet now
these ages pass
moments of forever
was no one left to wonder
who would keep
the lantern lit

lullabies
without a sound
stream when nights grow longer
would e’er these truths
be written down –
beyond this veil of sight

have you love
for knowing –
worlds fulfilled by grace –
mysteries unfolding
sometimes I barely sleep

waters rise
above the bank
glories mate with starling –
destinies revealing us
as light to autumn skies

beyond the reasons
I could tell –
another prophet listens
as each divine remembrance
awakes anew within

passing through ~

more than breath
this passing through
becoming as I am –
the last I was
the first to know
of ways to understand

as grace revealed
by sweet design
no different than the one
as sacred to impression
as winds and sea –
of sun

as morning
rolls against the tide –
recalled the scent of rain
remembered me
as songs another sang
before I came

as holy as a verse
to write –
prophets sworn to find
as here alone –
when all was still
a silence so divine

as soul to soul
within without –
and closer than can be
wherever there
the name of love –
shall speak the same
of me

fragile as a month
of mondays
sky lit up with amber shows –
lazy as a dream returning
down these crooked
dusty roads

drop me by
the way to someplace –
wandered home this way before
told myself another story –
I won’t miss you any more

the way so weary
trees were crying –
bowed to bone beside the creek
red sky nights
of ruby ribbon
whisper strung from evergreen

wrote a note
with purple crayon –
pinned it to the lantern’s bright
begged you find me
on the pasture –
counting lives by firelight

first as I and you were
early –
caught your look of sweet surprise
paradise was missing somewhere –
dare I step into
your eyes

asked you not
of plans for leaving –
drew a map to heaven’s gate
told you more
than I could ever
take it back
one word too late

knew their names
each constellation –
sisters
brothers
venus
mars
traced them all as if I never
knew you’d go –
this close
this far

come at last an answer
to questions unremembered
as who you were for me
is nothing left –
ashes to be swept across
these traces of forever –
so sweetly now
the grey dove
sails away

heaven has no bounty
beyond my will to wander –
so gather me
as glories to your breast
raise the window
break the plate
burn the fields of clover –
but barter not the moon
that knows me best

was more to me
than kingdoms come
or something someone said
beg for once you listen
with your heart
the last of summer sweat
is threatening the harvest –
as soon the snow will rise
beyond the barn

turn the page
to evermore
curse the verses passing
evidence of something here
I should have given time –
my hands are moving slower
as sets the evening shade
– will surely reconcile
to take my pen

that is my way
twisted as these sashes
yellow apron –
daisy damp aginst my drum
pleads my soul confess –
the only thing
I know for sure –
is likely now to falter

what name shall bitter taste
upon my death

weave my ribbons
bring the vase –
but let the pearls be scattered
loosed onto the path
as I was one –
I go as rain
to thirsty roots –
dreams of golden harvest
e’en as waters rush
to touch the sun

carry me the way
as then – to places
without memory
still me with ten thousand
paper birds
cast me on the silver lake
and let my story follow –
the eastern breeze
shall take of me
your name

come these skies
to bear me home
the way of ancient rivers –
as waiting just beyond
upon the shore
a life I might have lived
a truth beyond my longing –
waves to press my sorrows gone
is love I waited for

parable of destinies
awaits a new foretelling
as one to know
so few will understand –
the past can never be returned
but never is it ended
in places
we remain –
the arrow flies

as every wing
is sworn to soar
a path across the window –
seas forever parted
by a wayward
butterfly

beyond the proof
of heaven –
fathers keep an ancient vow
lives within the reach
of dreams –
awake to us
somehow

truth endears
the willing soul –
and stills these fits of slumber
tears are turned to smiles
(within our hope)

silence spans
the narrow bridge
moments fall around us
long the night
to keep us satisfied

in seeking truth –
we honor love
in these –
these mortal visions
parable of coming home
across the evening tide

rings overlapping
as fate to discover
some mystery there
in the place we become
as flame to a flicker
wings to a vapor
forever returning us
backwards
to home

to the words
of beginning
the seed barely planted
bring forth the baby
a mother to feed
e’en now in the darkness
loving arms worry
for the empty confession
a lingering need

breath to remember
from long nights
awakened
with light in our veins
another night’s fire
dreams of the journey
weaved to our memory
a warm resignation
of burning desire

when couldn’t
we wouldn’t
turn from returning –
somewhere
are others
repeating our name
to the edge of existence
eternity stretches –
to make of this moment
the reason
we came

calm the storm
against my waning –
press me not for names or dates
some evidence of where
I wasted –
or solace come for me
too late

still my drum
with loving timbers –
beg its music rise the same
once as one
returning cadence
twins returned to single flame

as come before
in this to tarry
seek not of truths I left behind
lest your journey
be for nothing
save for evidence
of mine

sit the sun
upon the ‘morrow
call me back into your will
pierce the veil
of comprehension –
e’er this earthy cup
be filled

with love beyond
my need to measure –
boundless now
this living balm
ancient drums of silent thunder –
wing the soul
to spirits calm

wrapped in rain ~

come the early chill
of autumn
maple spurned by drying leaves –
there blossoms of december
sleep beneath
her mystery

come the blush of frost
a snowflake –
to seal the blessed earth
ageless as the rings
surrounding –
burned to black
her lowly birth

before the spring was made
to suffer
one more fall beyond our reach
sacred vow of consecration
wrapped in rain –
the willows breech

to stand before –
alone untethered
more by faith that one of time
seeks the truth
but knows its answer –
one more bud
to break the vine

beyond this fleeting
intuition –
hope for one more
warm embrace
before the sun concedes to shadow
cedars watch the night
for grace
