stirring

perfume sits
in hand-me-down flannel
soft winter scenes
of snowflake
and pine

nestles my heart
in the wind ‘cross the mountains
yesterday stories
come home

how can you know
of moments so easy
lay me down here
at the edge of the night
pour to my purpose
the songs of forever
breathing returned to us
now

to touch
without touching –
unrelenting these mercies
drifted on clouds
to embarass the moon

visions of some place
some other
somewhere

yesterday stories
come home

refuge ~

just beyond the shadows
an orphaned light goes dim
and in the moment after –
sweet release
of solitude
and settled in
the burdens of the day
are swirling now –
ashes in my cup

cedar squeaks
in loving sigh –
perilous surrender
purged a place of darkness
from my thoughts
slowly then –
a favored hymn
rises from my center
to warm against the cool
that is the night

. . .

familiar ~

long before
this time was come
another breath we shared –
verses died
but no one missed
the sound

eager
as were hands to trace
treasure to the map –
tho crossing in the quiet
wore us down

kept the faith
to meet with wish
returning by the night –
tho never have I seen
you smile
that way

presence
sure to linger
wherever we might be
as life to strain
the vow of yesterday

between the life
I live (to love)
and the one I write about –
tis another me –
another restless will

somewhere I can go to
when nothing else
makes sense –
the only thing familiar
is the still

dare ~

dare to let me love you
as the swallow loves the spring
as winter mourns the smell
of burning leaves

dare to let me hold you
as blue defies the clouds
as storms to brace
against the night
we knew

dare to let me touch you
til the final flame is gone –
as secrets spilled
to shadows
round our bed

dare to let me understand
the magic that you make –
stories yet unwritten
to your dreams

dare to let me know you
as I knew you times before
and roads we took –
awaiting
to arrive

dare to let me kiss you
to taste your words as mine
and live on breath –
was just before
my name

sign language ~

listen
as silence –
translation becomes
sound to the stutter
of once blushing lips

waiting
the tell-tale
signs of confession
breath into life
such as this

given to promise
one language to keep
sweet as the heart
to divine

longing shall linger
as songs to the wind
or prayers
on the tongue –
for a time

blest in beginning
without thought for verse
or voices to snare
each regret

echoes
though quiet
shall ring on for days
made louder
by words
never said

. . .

destinies ~

syllables counted
suitcases gone
as something reminds
our season to end –
when wore me back down
as wing’eds to flame
and the ways of the wanderer
starting
again

as something (made stronger)
than compass
to bend –
maps become lines
in the choice of retreat
passions (so easy)
as sunlight to shade
where closing
my eyes
the story repeats

as briar
and blossom –
willow to wren
keepers were seeking
of keys (stayed behind)
pages spill over
with moments of truth
as black splits the night
into echoes
of time

since the age
of deciding
another to chance
guarded recycles –
aquarius come
aligned with my stars
as the sky
(nothing more)
as once I was written
to rings by the sun

wait
as I will
a lifetime (much more)
ten thousand
so quickly
my path to retrace
by births unremembered
my heart wakes (anew)
as night folds –
yet steals not
my place

close ~

gather me trumpets –
queen anne
and clover
make of this hour
a memory of bliss
sail me to dream
on the wind of your wishes
wake me to promise –
with naught to resist

roll me in flannel
dress me in cotton
brush to my presence
the damp smell of wheat
one fleeting moment
shall garner eternal
a place on your smile
I was heaven to be

of fates undecided
by the moons
of july –
and wishes where
waters we flowed –
backwards returning
and further yet
north –
a frozen reminder
of time passing on

forgotten
the reasons –
for every misstep
and paths without conscious
to lure us away
as prophets forsaken
by promise to love –
for boots
and a bible –
was heaven betrayed

who’s to know
who would listen
were the world
made to hear –
and sworn for release
was music
to make

of another I knew
a truth almost gone
and a flame more
than dark could recall
a whisper dissolved
on the hope of a sigh
and worried
not far –
for the coming
again

I’ve known you awhile
more than nights
without name
or stories I’m sure
to remember –
swirls within letters
beauty disguised –
loops became lust
became love

sweet recognition
of times here before
turning of seasons
with nothing to lose –
reminders
how easy
was loving to breathe –
retelling of stories
once written
of you

exposure ~

in the mist
that was my yesterdays
ten thousand silent birds
– beyond my will to hear
are singing now
but for the night
of wing’ed flight
to worlds beyond my birth
was never meant
a path to me somehow

speckled green
and tattered blues
patchwork bursts of reason
stitched with time
but worn the rest away
hung to line
the veil between
here I am and ever
– someone speaks
and I don’t know their name

shutter speed
as autumn peaks
to fall beneath the cedars
climbing up
to make my bed beyond
little lights
to prick my skin
– who am I to tell
when left outside the gate
a moment long

pressed into
the winter wheat
smelled of other courage
and where our
dreams have gone –
I couldn’t say
leaving takes the
longest time
when all the crops come in
– the mist is rising slowly
to melt my fears
away

sapphire ~

♥
give me to laughter
one more everafter –
and suffer not long the choice
to receive
ribbons unspooling
destinies fooling
as midnight
meant maybe
and let us believe

there are worlds
sapphire blue
the color of eyelids –
and places held closer than blame
sworn to our keeping
as somebody’s presence
when left us to answer
of questions the same

to where we began
in the starting all over
was heaven now given

a time and a place
as near to our own –
another forgiven
was held to our being
creation retraced

scored by the letting
of light into loving –
everything
less than this moment (this now)
the gift of endurance –
with every salvation
longing made whole
in the love
we allow

♥
