lost to the passing
of dark into day ~
as starlight
of dew
bittersweet

breathed
a beginning
how easily done ~
as chill to
the sweat of defeat

a number
a name ~
ascribed to the winds
an essence remaining
somewhere

tender assault
on my favorite time ~
quietly
finding you there

stitched to the back
of lids ~
where I’ve kept
places and times
we will meet

music sometimes
when the words
fall apart
forgiven the path
of retreat

lifelines
are stretched
from one to the next ~
a glimmer of someone
I knew

where are you now
I wonder all morning ~
as twilight
lays wet on the dew

I swear ~

steady this drum
on the pulse of your mercies
and steal my last breath
from the breeze
strain to the sound
of poetry pleading
to moments all measured
by these

know me
to know me
closer to close
softer the name you recite
as learning to breathe
with somebody else
adrift in your essence
tonight

break from the empty
fill now the warmth
of sunlight to corners
long bare
throw off the covers
and run through the shadows
~ I’ll be your memory
I swear

save for indifference
the doings undone
and worry
for places to be
slow to the rhythm
of night birds returning
o’er oceans
remembered
as me

ruby red ~

her hair was spun
of gypsy moths
and weaved with ribbon
ruby red –
her eyes
a shade of cappucine
gave life to every
dream or dread

she spoke in words
not one could know
a language
only she could speak
a universe
where all was love –
would curse the sailor’s
longing – weak

her fragile hands
a raven’s breast
fluttered soft the beat
of care
a blossomed white
from passions rose –
as essence bloomed
a lover’s fare

she breathed
ten thousand years of light
and knew of things
most men could not
she harbored tears
for moments lost –
and spoke with kind
of love
forgot

what time was hers
no one could say
another birth from dying crossed
what kiss was made
to give away

what ruby red
a gypsy moth

longing to know ~

from places no longer
the one getting by ~
as silver blue veins
trace the will of the wind
and speak of forever
our longing to know ~
like the hush of a whippoorwill
coming to nest
and branches bent over
by the memory of snow

terrapin tea rose
and red scarlet laces ~
were bloomed from the shade
of maple and rye
burdens forgot to the passing
of seasons ~
lives resurrected
as love would not die

red tail renewal
preys o’er the pasture
as swoons for another
a thought passed
between ~
whispers of always
linger as loving
to lie with us down
on a blanket
of dreams

where kept to the memory
of unfinished language
and rest within moments
our reason to be ~
as teardrops fall
on this view of creation
love becomes light
and life ~
destiny

as we are ~

were ever the distance
from then into now
be more than one lifetime
of living allowed
a sign (without warning)
another sweet smile
of grace in the crossing
as mile welcomes mile

who would know
lest we tell them
of lifetimes before
of living left over
by love – loving more
of a place so much richer
than as this – as we are
given not to a city
a breath or a star

more than name
less than ever
we shall pass – even so
not for years to be counted
or blessings bestowed
would love be constrained
to a time or a place
or touch be recalled
as a fleeting embrace

can it be
I can see
even more – that I feel
what of words rarely spoken
are no less what is real
crossed the night
sans the distance
comes as thought – not so far
can it be I am present
in the places you are

will these voices be lost
to the ages (and then)
might we wake from this dream
remembering when
as will be – it was written
long before we were one
love is more than a moment
to the place
we become

wasted ~

before the fall was over
did angels gather round
in search of light
and destinies
set free

from others
worn by heartache
robbed the willing curse
the power to claim
of life was meant to be

ages still and I am one
the same as then –
to differ
seeds of recognition –
at last are taking hold

poems writ but
found no ease –
no verse of consecration
fields to burn
now standing in the cold

love without
one more goodbye
sealed beneath the moss –
lovers counting lies
where silence sleeps

broken by acceptance
of weakness
more than sin –
of arms denied the comfort
no one keeps

turn from me
turn away –
for I can not be wasted –
to know of love that whispers
plans to pay

steal my soul
if this be all –
was come of resurrection
leave me without mercy
lest my truth be
sold away

He said.

Let me ask you something,
If you don’t mind.
Lay my head on your shoulder
Wrap myself in your storm,
Where it’s safe
Where it’s warm.
Let me tell you something.
I promise it’s something real.
Let me tell you something,
Something about my self.
Something I’ve never told a soul
Not even myself
Out of fear
Out of the knowledge I wouldn’t be understood,
Known
Confirming my solitude
Confirming I’m alone.

I’m a middle aged, middle child
Born to middle class means,
In the middle of a country
That values extremes.
I don’t know what that means
If anything
In the greater scheme
If anything,
But I do know
I do believe
I’m happiest in my middle life,
That world I find between.
Between the absurdity of the waking world
And the lucid world of dreams
Where anything is possible
And nothing is what it seems.
There lies the creative world
Combining the two.
There I find that amazing world
That led me straight to you.

She said.

I’m from another place
just south and to the east
most all my days
spent barefoot
‘cept those
spent on my knees
‘cept those I walked
within the dark
searching for a light
would burn with me the brighter
of suns within the night
traded words
and followed maps
we made of yesterday
across the plains
o’er other sands
would lead me back this way
from middle to the north
south of everything
your road –
a gravel leading here
you chiseled every stone
were steps (to where I’m going)
a path to bring me home

He said.

So here we are.
A fortuitous interlude
Where life fades away
Concerns and fear allay
Dreams and visions hold sway.
An oasis
In the midst of this convoluted jungle.
Temperate winds
Beneath a sky so blue.
But it’s not like us to savor the moment
It’s not like us to let time slip by
Unexamined, unquestioned.
So we search the drifting clouds
For purpose,
For meaning.
But it’s up to us to provide that meaning,
Wouldn’t you agree?
Meaning is the gift we give
Purpose the reason we survive, we live?

She said.

There’s so much more
than this,
a life to spend
in search of bliss
as sighs held captive
to a kiss…
begin to give us answer.
There’s wings
with light their only truth,
days behind we hid the proof,
gave the best to wasted youth,
knew we’d come to nothing.
If only for a moment (now)
we’re in this place
as grace allowed,
will find our way to love (somehow),
much stronger for the journey.

She said, it’s no more
than a day
just close your eyes
and know the way
is open where we left before
the same we came
to follow…

close your eyes
reach out your hand
there’s much
that I don’t understand
but I’ll show you what I do
and then…
when we have passed
into the light
we’ll remember this
(redeeming night)
when truth bespoke
of wisdom’s plight
was here we lingered
out of sight
an oasis –
for the moment

He said.

You make me laugh
At myself
At the simplicity of it all.
Why did I make it so complicated?
When it was as plain and true and beautiful
As you
And this moment.
This moment.

So long I’ve wandered
So long I’ve searched
Desperate to find reason
To conquer why
To slay doubt
And all the while
It was here
In your arms.

The only truth
The only meaning,
The only reason,
To love and be loved.
No matter how briefly.
How deeply.

How lovely.

She said.

was not for you decided
I never asked
(how could I ask)
when was always mine
to give (to hold)
however brief
(eternity shall pass
and start all over)

was not for you decided
I never asked
(why would I ask).

save us
from the bitterness
comes as winter snow
pressed against the windowpanes
when nights are long
and cold

when holding back
means holding on
they warned us not to chance
would never be the same again
these lives of circumstance

the tell-tale sign
of autumn leaves
september claims the skies
a half an ounce of lonely
will drown you every time

when taking back
that goodbye kiss
there never should have been
distance passed
without a word
this silence to defend

silver threads
and thirteen moons
a key without a mate
held as truth a little while
these souvenirs of fate

you faced
the noonday sun
with wonder why you came
I was laughing
as the clouds rolled in –
and praying it would rain

when a moment stilled
eternity –
with memory of the fall
you were watching me
as I reached for you –
when nothing moved
at all

no mistaking of the promise
though left to wonder
when would be –
a goodbye kiss
for taking back
a date with destiny

I wish you knew ~

was a morning stilled
by dew to frost
steam rolled off a winter lawn
was there before
the sun woke up
I lay beneath the stars
at dawn

I listened hard
would comfort come
eyes closed tight,
my arms spread wide…
would I be blessed
to hold you still —
I spoke your name
and wept inside

I wish you knew
of thoughts unshared —
of love unspoke
my sore regret
for moments passed
alone and far,
I wonder —

will you find me
yet

a startled bird
a swirling leaf
a gentle sigh — as breath to skin

I sense you here
as warmth — the sun
is woke from sleep
to burn again

he swore
the buffalo were bigger
(tho how he knew – he couldn’t say)
sheets of storm
to claim the valley

nights
(they took his breath away)

was made a bed
of fur and needles
bear and bull
another claim
fathers lost (and fathers keeping)
watchful stars above the plain
spoke of times
the air much sweeter
mountains emptied blue and clear
sunlight fell to love
around them
whispers (only they could hear)

told of darkness
pressed to shadows
swirled in branches (cedar smoke)
someone came
the world to promise
with practiced pen
were lives rewrote
of far away (the leaving lonely)
left behind was paradise
ceilings kept a view
of heaven
longing pooled in sacred light

blessed place
of blood and honor
none could prosper
from disgrace

nights he wanders still (as thunder)
rolling herds of wind
and rain
