wings above the trees ~

more times than not
I waited
til all the lights were out
and the only sound
was wings
above the trees

for countless nights
I stood alone
just beyond your gate
touching stars
and waiting for the moon

to fall
against my longing
split my lowly soul again
*hush*
my lone confession
to the still

the only chatter
noticed there
was the tremor of my heart
a drum to surely wake
the poet’s dream

lights within
my wanting skin
warmth without regret
dress to drag the briars
miles to home

autumn lures
the afternoon to chill
frost is soon
becoming

already I’m left
standing
in the dark

only this ~

only this –
and I warned you
of coming undone – a place
in the stillness awaiting
our love –
wrapped up in flannel
sighs into silk –
and words fell as silent
reminders of us

I wanted you
needed you
something to matter
when all the rest fated
you’d tie me back down –
caught as a kite
strings in the treetops –
assured of your coming
to pull me around

only this –
and you warned me
you were more than imagined
should have listened
when something
was muttered within
whispering song of the swallow
wind through the reeds
where words
should have been

only this –
and I warned you
there would be no forgetting
trace to unravel
the best of your plans –
long past the time
you’d remember my kisses
would come as a shadow
to sit with you
now

of moments
made haste –
forgiveness of feeling
and paths not the same
I have known –

walk with me
wrestle me –
tell me your future
was never the stars
made light in my hair
or jasper the color
of faraway glances

roads going nowhere
only this –
I recall

letters in the sand ~

gather me the blessings
of tomorrow’s brighter sun
and hurry not the lessons
lest they run
as anxious hands to mar the face
is time not more than luck
or visions but a place
already known
speak again of waking dreams
and roads betrayed the veil
of granite paths
and letters in the sand
carry me
marry me
pacify my longing
sit me through the night
and let me hear
of reason come
the way of home ~
of volumes long since buried
and worlds beyond our will
to understand
seal my trust with kisses
of still familiar words
breathe the night
and burst in me the day

all I have ~

of yesterdays I saved not one
to worry for tomorrow ~
and cured them not with misery and lace
stored the sorrow with the joy
and nursed not one the more ~
for what I loved ~
I’d lose myself
in tears of willing grace

and swear allegiance to the scars
seal my lips with sighs ~
dream the dream of lovers sworn to moss
take of these ~ the curs’ed date
and hold my flag on high ~
forgiven now each tragedy of cost

reminded of another day
and memories made dearer
by violin and passions bittersweet
as rushed into the sunset
with promise of one more ~
a life of resurrection
another dawn to greet

shangri-la ~

who am I
this choice to be
and ageless as a fable
fastened to another page
pretending then to know
the time was sure
but never less
than sheets of corded linen
and where would I be led
but shangri-la

would e’er they read
this testament
and wonder what I knew
to where I’ve gone
when all is secret here
as roads are traced
from east to west ~
buzz from south to home
tho still there will be those
who understand

to wait another moment
will watch the sky for signs
and trust the waves
to sail the northern lights
I wonder will they notice
a subtle change in breeze ~
when the moon is almost gone
and cedar sings

whispers ~

start me now
another time ~
beyond the edge of waiting
as wisdom wills to reason
beyond the winter’s say

life within
this present tense
of all and still becoming
no other could confess of such
or know of time this way

of hands to fit with other hands
lines impressed to lines
and faultless now the lull
to pull us home ~
the change of light
to more than sun
against the startled morning
essence found in moments
‘fore the dew

such silence prone
to miracles
might change these mortal vines ~
and gather us
as lilies to the vase

care for me
don’t spare for me
a place within your garden
and pray my seed be scattered
to the winds

move aside these shadows
of dawn’s caress returning ~
standing down the trees
beyond the gate
circles drawn in echo
to the waters near the willows
returning all for love
we held within

silken touch of something more
than passing on the pathway ~
knowing of another time
we dare not speak of here
and yet without the words
were we inclined

to tell it all
so eagerly the stories
I’ve been holding ~
bittersweet their presence
on my tongue

perfumes thru the window
float ~
whispers of remember
as names denied a place
beyond the stone

but for the soul
within the soul
of rivers ~ living timbers
mountains mourn a moment
so divine

verses stitched together
by one heart another day ~
knit a shell of blossoms
undisturbed
ribbons to an autumn sky
write in words we know

held apart
the lowly bloom ~
refused to fade away

into this one ~

for every time
I thought I knew ~
another came I wondered
and questioned every question
born of dreams

gave away
the best of me ~
wished on ancient stars
and swore I’d find my way
to where you sleep

for memories I never had
and seasons passing
somewhere ~
fields of winter wheat
have blown away

as come to this
the sweetest place ~
of all I’ve known before
snowflakes fall as blooms
to mid July

skies could never mirror
the refuge of your eyes ~
reflecting back the colors
of the soul

here am I ~
the same as lifetimes passed
into this one ~
eternal as a moment
wished I once on you

please ~

as sunlight fills
the places ~
just beyond my summer dream
and stills my heart with
wishes for the rain

the steamy breath
of morning fire ~
stumbled from the shadows
and crossed a broken fence
into my way

gold embraced by crimson
weeds and red perfume ~
lacey lace of spinners
weaved for miles
the pass between

breaks my thought
with more than once ~
and where I’ll be tomorrow
spilled against a slant
of crooked board

warmed within a glass
of sugar tea and sweet magnolia
burned the window brown
with summer please

promise ~

to wonder why
it was to be
when came ~ another day
though not your plan
to leave again
another heart to save

with words
to match your rhythm ~
as language spilled to rhyme
we flew beyond the seeking
as geese into the night

wanting for a moment
never knew the way
we’d be ~
returning for each other
by way of memory

to know again
as once we were ~
when swore an oath to find
the way beyond the darkness ~
a moment so divine

we couldn’t stay
we wouldn’t say
lest words ~ our truth reveal
a mystery
we’d come again
this promise to fulfill

e’er destiny be less
than more
or fate betray our place
words denied a keeper
tales of breath and lace ~

as shadows failing
brushed aside by sighs ~
a lover’s curse
shall be the way remembered ~
as souls reborn to verse

don’t go ~

story me now
the life before someday
and who I was then
seems you’re all I know
when held as we were ~
(in the place we don’t mention)
the truth passed beyond
the choice to let go

riddles in rhyming
just suppose nothing
wherein we ~ the dream ~
made our way to the now
back to the places
always we linger
where you were (somewhere)
forgotten just how

the shade
of your eyes
is a moonlight reflection
embers to flame ~
this love to resume
as the touch of your hand ~
to the door of my longing
were lifetimes returning
to this ~ unassumed

what will come
or just where we’ll be come forever ~
a rush unremembered ~
this feeling of home

with never a thought
to untangle the answers
lest they whisper some other
don’t go ~
measuring breaths
by times barely breathing
so easy the telling
from others we’ve known

story me now
your passion for living ~
and where the light plays
on the still of your soul

I’ll start the coffee
if you’ll prop the window –
I’ll meet you here
somewhere ~
when next you are home
