get me back ~

lifetimes more
somewhere I know
I left you broken (left you blue)
fortune raised to falling light –
into these arms
of wishes true

wore your tears
against my heart
eighty years and not a one –
you weren’t a part
of me (becoming)
– jealous moon
of curs’ed sun

found a note
you left behind –
and pinned your voice
inside my sleeve
for every time
I heard your name
my breath was stopped
for love (to grieve)

was ever I
to feel this way –
or given grace
again somewhere
(take me back) into this life –
another day
to find you there

dare you break
of ties so frail –
as final payment lingers due
wilted roses
broken fence
and miles between
(I never knew)

where you’d be
this time around –
Kentucky roads
split north and south
the same old stars –
(the same sweet view)
and all the rest
forgotten now

once enough
forever still –
words are folded
(you can’t see)
pages rub (my memory raw)
as night returns
your love
to me

noonday ~

save us
from the bitterness
comes as winter snow
pressed against the windowpanes
when nights are long
and cold

when holding back
means holding on
they warned us not to chance
would never be the same again
these lives of circumstance

the tell-tale sign
of autumn leaves
september claims the skies
a half an ounce of lonely
will drown you every time

when taking back
that goodbye kiss
there never should have been
distance passed
without a word
this silence to defend

silver threads
and thirteen moons
a key without a mate
held as truth a little while
these souvenirs of fate

you faced
the noonday sun
with wonder why you came
I was laughing
as the clouds rolled in –
and praying it would rain

when a moment stilled
eternity –
with memory of the fall
you were watching me
as I reached for you –
when nothing moved
at all

no mistaking of the promise
though left to wonder
when would be –
a goodbye kiss
for taking back
a date with destiny

this way ~

meet me
where the sunrise
burns dreams
into the waking –
yellow as the roses
yesterday

were begged forgiveness
fell apart –
as petals on the counter
before the words were gone
and truth betrayed

meet me
where the waters roll
backwards to the glaciers
as cold to polish black
the river rocks

dream
and tell me
where I was
before you found me waiting
still within the first to rise
breath undone
by light

save for me
the final dance
though I am not a dancer
practiced more to verse
than e’er to sway
of arms around me
reaching
to keep my heart aloft –
hands to hold
as wishes tucked away

a picture postcard
kept in place
by something more becoming
for years I will remember you
this way
constellations shining
in the light behind your eyes

evermore resounding
in words we couldn’t say

beneath the bark ~

spring has melted
summer stone
as blossoms white
to grace the ground
crooners sit
the long night perched –
balanced by the moon

silhouette of shadow
against this pink charade
surely this –
our fate to know
one more blessed summer
met as one to count
of hairs
(every day) between

the rising
and the falling down
so glad we have no warning –
of when the bell
shall toll
and time begins

dusted light
before the dawn
yet eyes can see forever
as lovers press allegiance
to the blade

crickets
store their trumpets
and still their tired hands –
while luna slows her heart
against the wood

one more turn
eternal
as rings beneath the bark –
balance me beside the moon
as doves before
the day

I wish you knew ~

was a morning stilled
by dew to frost
steam rolled off a winter lawn
was there before
the sun woke up
I lay beneath the stars
at dawn

I listened hard
would comfort come
eyes closed tight,
my arms spread wide…
would I be blessed
to hold you still —
I spoke your name
and wept inside

I wish you knew
of thoughts unshared —
of love unspoke
my sore regret
for moments passed
alone and far,
I wonder —

will you find me
yet

a startled bird
a swirling leaf
a gentle sigh — as breath to skin

I sense you here
as warmth — the sun
is woke from sleep
to burn again

as soft the wind
the grasses lure
and golden flows the river
swayed against the backs
of skyward glance

such it is
the calm retreat
of thought before emotion
as voice remembered
after words
have gone

in the silence
do you listen
e’er your name be spoken here
or prayed the night
in private –
echoes falling
just as clear

as leaves
restore a blanket
spun to ribbons
for my hair –
will breezes blow
our truth to know
in pieces
everywhere

he swore
the buffalo were bigger
(tho how he knew – he couldn’t say)
sheets of storm
to claim the valley

nights
(they took his breath away)

was made a bed
of fur and needles
bear and bull
another claim
fathers lost (and fathers keeping)
watchful stars above the plain
spoke of times
the air much sweeter
mountains emptied blue and clear
sunlight fell to love
around them
whispers (only they could hear)

told of darkness
pressed to shadows
swirled in branches (cedar smoke)
someone came
the world to promise
with practiced pen
were lives rewrote
of far away (the leaving lonely)
left behind was paradise
ceilings kept a view
of heaven
longing pooled in sacred light

blessed place
of blood and honor
none could prosper
from disgrace

nights he wanders still (as thunder)
rolling herds of wind
and rain

baby birds
and someone misses
verse succumb to evergreen
lost within
the yellows glisten
tempting me –
as flame to wing

smiles returning
unknown language –
autumn falling soft the night
raindrops ring
with gentle cadence –
loving lisp
to nature’s sigh

til slower now
the stories telling
stars where once was only blue
days fold into years
forgiving –
past the time
when wishes true

thought not long
the way unyielding
or places I mistook for mine –
tore my jeans
as I was leaving
and for a little while
was blind

apart from everything she was
tis more she sits for dinner –
and stays with me
beyond the early show
sweaters born
the scent of moths –
and gems beyond the sparkle
combs that never knew
awaited there

along a stretch of cypress
polished by a wish –
and caught up in the magic
of her eyes –
a fleeting smile
a flash of grace
before the twilight faded
and trapped as she
within the mirrored glass

memories
much more than most –
crystal jars and perfume
shaded now
by aging faded grey
perfect pearls untangled
by the loss of one
the other
and wrapped beneath a net
of window’s wear

decades since we noticed
her words were almost gone
ink displaced by tears
and linen worn
a tragedy of letting be
the music of her voice –
so very few
are left to know
her song

cedar boxes
and old shiftrobes –
blankets more than winter
left beside the hopes
of yesterday
powdered white
the morning comes –
in traces of gardenia

brushed to gold
the weaver’s paradise

mercy come
as mercies will
into the rite of slumber
and wait the waking eyes
to understand
the light beyond
was come into
the night without concession
stilled beside the river
was our lives

turning home
as one to know –
another shall be waiting
the roads between
and those we made anew
tie these strings
into the boughs
sing of something better
was held within the silence
secrets to the breast

honor me
as I have you –
speak that I might find you
waited by the door
where once you fell
give of me the story
become as one with mine
as everafter written
now the page

verses lie beneath me
where two were once
made one
wrapped in rhyme
and set afire by word
