shutter

as verses
I’m no different
from one hundred more
you loved –
poem unintended
for your soul

color me
into your lines
let my spirit fly
forgotten now the taste
of april snow

torn along
these very scars
weathered boards and all
pushed into the places
 met with rhyme

tell the others
what you can
and save the rest
for fall
when dreams are blowing
color off the trees

spread your fingers
o’er the map
roads to take you home
curs’ed now
the poet
to believe

route of evermore ~

proof

were promises
remembered
a hole in paradise –
fairytales rewritten
by the night
destiny untangled
by the memory of hands
kisses wore the route
of evermore

were consequence
a story –
meant to end some other way
as margins left
unblemished by regret
heroines and heroes
each remained as one
pressed into the telling
of desire

were wishes kept
unspoken
by a star
refused to fall

sworn to dance ~

swimmer

guard this heart
as was your own
for surely once it did
beat within the timbre
of your drum

sewn into the measure
of melodies made one
hidden by the secrets
of the rain

fell asleep
along the way
and rocked
the cowboy home –
rushed beyond the canyons
to the sea

fluted as a lullabye
hummingbird to gull –
floating west
a message to divine

perfumed nights
betrayed the chill –
of catfish salamander
cedars sworn to dance
beside the wind

warmest crush
of honeybees
swarm above the waves –
strained into the whisper
was told of you
and me

keetoowah bride

poised now
the twilight
to turn away the moon –
denied by fate
to see her
blushing bride

given to excuses
for what might never be
let me in
she pleaded
with the tide

how can I
when nothing here
is making me of sense
and surely love so real
will bring me shame

of passions sweet
such tenderness
I yearn to know your ways
to still my heart from bursting
yours
the same

what am I
but ancient steel
some distance from the sun
brushed aside
my honor
for your breeze

as memories
the past resolved
as living let me love
provision now for something
I can’t see

hold the night
a moment more
let me hear your sigh
returning me to silence
waning here

before the dawn
of leaving lost –
there I hold you still
forgotten now
my story –
distance marked
by fear

Author’s Note: Partially inspired by a quote shared with me by a student –
“But holding people away from you, and denying yourself love, that doesn’t make you strong. If anything it makes you weaker, because you’re doing it out of fear.”

stone

were left mine
to give
a place on your skin
one light
when the dark
gathers ’round
were time emptied mercy
as passing into
til only now faintly
my call

were ne’er mine
to barter
yet still might I plea
one selfish restraint
to forgive
counted not twice
the days in between
or burdened my tongue
with your name

had I but choices
so few to regard
were come of my will
not regret
direction decided by moments
so dear
grace for the journey
enough

were stars left
for wishing
would cleave from the black
the last –
else forever be gone
and I without measure
or means to recall
love never spoken
the same

regarding the rest
of somewhere I know
lifetimes are weighted and still
verses revised
shall sit you the night –
a memory of love
to remain

diamonds to light ~

remembered

this more than for wanting
a sweet apprehension –
as stems folded double by bloom
burst through the cracks
of fear unsurrendered
are holes where heaven
shines through

tis more than the morning
and sunlight defended
webs strung as diamonds
to light
shivers and ceilings
altered by grace
delicate whispers –
a voice in the night

a glow on the hearth
a flame in the heart
an ember of all that has been
strained in the living –
sitting fire to life
waiting as grace
rushes in

tis more than belief
in a miracle once
for moments – eternity shines
richer the graden run over
by weeds –
as bliss hanging low
on the vine

blessed

for answers
I’m not praying
but to know the ones I have
forgotten not
the questions
or the cross

another day
and passed between
the sunlight into shade
who of us remembers
what was lost

but for something
more
becoming
in the evidence of light
sorrows bloomed
against a purple sky

broken every promise
forgiven every wrong
whispers lie against me
all the night

echoes started
far away
are thunder to my soul
lessons come
in sacrifice and rain

for answers
I’m not praying
e’en now my knees
grow weak
stumbled o’er
the blessings of amen

forgotten to sing ~

forgot to sing

of eyes to shine
though looked away –
daring not to linger
on light would pierce
your veil of circumstance

of flaws
to wear your freedoms
perfection only you
can know of bliss was born
to wear your name

of falling
not for fear alone
the reason to awake –
to soar again
the lowly heart to dream

of knowing
more than these I know
are others I am part –
became as one
with everything
the universe consoles

of stories
more than one be writ
of places, faces gone
swords and thieves disguised
as arms of grace

of love
no more than this to give
no magic to erase
a day before this golden sun
did rise

of sorrows
let us gather them
and hold them to our hearts –
surrendered now the tempest
to the calm

our story

what judgements now
the pillow makes –
of those
ten thousand more to break
hush the telling
of what our own –
so busy now the tongue

tary not
on grand design
to make of self the more
by fate
would lay aside the robes
of grace –
and gather yet
the rags of hate

would envy die
or greed consume
the righteous in resounding
how far the victor
falling – was not for wrong
the right

hear this prayer
was only one –
when held a sinner chained
returned to love
by one divine –
let love our truth
reclaim

Author’s Note: In light of this week’s announcements and
headline ‘falls from grace’. We sink no lower than the
moment we bend to pick the stone.  The only story we write is our own.

scattered graces ~

close enough

of retracing
scattered graces –
storms clouds gather me around
blackened feathers
silken wages –
haunt the soul
with not a sound

who would know
 of those to listen –
where you are
tho once for me –
I knew you best
I loved you better
but for the man you couldn’t be

clearer eyes
persuade the heavens
counted tulips through the fire
 given love
the grace for living –
sweet the touch
beyond desire

are you now
tho who can tell me
what of faith
when life is past –

was the love I knew becoming
ever real or just
my last
