silver bells and rattles ~

reverses

slip the ring
from round my heart
curs’ed day for trading
so fragile now
our leaving to begin

take of mine
the cedar chest
fourteen sets of wishes
carried from the attic
to the curb

dare me not
to suffer long
with silver bells and rattles
sheets
to match the curtains
I don’t care

set me sail
with dignity –
starch the winter white
and paper now
along our only hall

destiny awaits
the sun
where once Kentucky yearned
for linens kept
in cardboard –
promise in the barn

harvest

the seasons
unrelenting –
as chasing one another
winter blew
as ashes on July
last we spoke –
November
was a time I’ve come
to love –
holding still
the magic of our spring

waiting there
within the chill
of autumn to the harvest –
more than e’er
we knew to understand
bitter wheat
was turned again
to seed the fields of summer –
dreams we dreamed
awake us different
now

across
and thru
these sleepless nights
blankets drag
the ground –
revealed another truth
for why we came
wanting but for nothing
would see the past
undone –

the snow would melt
to flowers all
around

dreams we know by heart ~

eternities reaching

beyond the reach
of wisdom  –
longing makes a plan
and scratches there
our name
in blocks of time
given more
than giving back
letting go
to let
choice before the choosing
comes again

beneath the want
of wandering –
are dreams we know by heart
echoes of a once
familiar song –
played on silken chords
ringing without sound –
when wished upon a moon
we couldn’t see

before and since
of all we are –
reversing now the tides
are tears –
we thought were washing
us away
come the sigh
we breathed into –
matching with our own
blessings pass
unnoticed
to our light

 counter attack

were ever you broken
how else could you know
the pattern reserved
for a now shattered cup
of vines caressing
the fragile gilt edge
– were wishing for more
than a thimble

tipped beyond
reasonable
longing to stay
when scattered as dust
to the boards
porcelain slivers
grieve now the stain
was left of a kiss
by the fall

august 2012

stood beyond
the blanket
of blistered buttercups
grasses green
the sweeping wheat
of song

passions
I could ne’ver confess
swirl to aching verse
leaned into the hunger
of the wind

seasons gone
five hundred years
names are written over
as sides have taken
comfort
in the loss

of choices
made – the past is gone
tho none can say for sure –
what of love
was written to endure

immortal still
 the essence left
of places where we lay

– as whispers to awaken

in fields
of yesterday

blessing

of then
another came
and I was loved
before I knew
the road ahead –
would curve into the wonder
of the blue

of ways
I never noticed
where my sorrow would
remain –
wrapped in linen
joys –
every sweet release
of pain

of life
the willing servant
comes the only path
to keep
witness to the loss
was found a place
within my deep

of choice
the answer always
comes – would love
and die for this
reminded of the scars
but more
the bliss

of then
I have such reasons
to touch – to live
to grow
within this perfect
presence –
another I shall
know

dreamscape

as one
within the quiet
a dream I can’t retire
like still the
peacock pillows
puddle orange light
as years beyond
the telling –
of every
almost story

blue veins weave
my mystery
slid beneath my surface
as golden rivers
melt the willing ice
remembered me
another sun –
beyond the leaving time
held within the passions
of the deep

fail me with
the memories
and wait the lights
to fade –
as secrets scatter
broken to the glass
come the grace
of morning –
as praise for nights between
will find me here
wondering why
it is

fingers warm
the spindle –
of an ag’ed spinning wheel
crimson threads
burn through these realms
of steel

redemption

loose the leaf
that has not love
would scorn the bitter ivy
 to thrive within
the autumn wind’s distress
take of hands
the soft heart
feathers
round the damaged soul
when mattered once –
the whole of one
to love

bless the wrongs
of suffered right –
wisdom surely come
to claim
the lowly wanderer
again
bear the wings
of angels –
to fly our spirits home
forgotten now the leaving
to atone

dry the tears
and heal the hurt –
bloom these gardens new
with flowers
of remembrance to our name –
sprouted from our sorrows
nurtured by our sins
forgiven us the weeds
that right
our stone

crossed

had I known you here
some other day –
for lives so
different now
for the tangled up
and pulled apart –
of graces we allowed

had I known of love
would choose the same
to cross
into your night
as a verse
recited silent
wing’ed to your light

had I known the way
would bring us home –
as dreams
this time foretold
would love you still
for sorrows felt –
one heart
one hand to hold

had I known you
as I know you
with time and space
to be
forever
we are loving this

– an unknown
destiny

into

as dark
the ways to wander
and worried there alone
of where the gods were leading
(let them lead)
casting deep
our tattered nets
into this sweet divide
made between this world
and those beyond

fragile
as the ancient loop
barely seen at all –
tho stretched to hold
of all together now
as one to understanding
let now the strings be loosed –
as each was sworn
another time
to be
