epiphany ~

wherestill

there was a time I knew
and a time that fell before
some scattered unfamiliar
in the midst of truth
some point when I lingered
stepped from darkness
into light
moved my bed much closer
to the window
gave my life to something
greater than

these pieces I’ve become
at last now fit together
were just waiting this
their moment
to make sense

pages without numbers
ribbons without red
numbers counted backwards
each death the same
awaiting an epiphany
a solitude revival
for the tent to raise
the choir to sing me home

. . .

just beyond ~

beyondtheseplaces

end of day, end of time
both have now arrived
we must believe
love will outlast us
somehow, mysteriously
cast beyond what we have always
understood, in the ethereal
spheres, in the chaos
of a million heartbeats
rhyming here and now
with a splash of eternity’s wish
and in the single moment
everything stops to change
irrevocably, will you stifle a tear
as my hand grows cold
and my fears fade into
your solitude?

we cannot speculate
about dreams between the sun and moon
starlight’s secrets or the depths
of a single human soul
life is a tiny frozen fragment of an iceberg
what remains invisible coerces our faith
into a destiny called beyond
we hear our heartbeat articulate
its incessant pumping red emotion
recalling the flush of today’s triumph
or yesterday’s merciless failure
we puff our lungs with stale air, and mask
a fleeting wish for a hermit’s habitation
a place where dreams stimulate us,
and spin desire into a worldly orbit
like a crazy laughing merry-go-round —
will we never learn to calculate
the distance between two words of love?

silenceme

as thunder wakes
the story stone
as same
the silent drum
is hidden ‘neath
these ancient silver skies
worn against ten thousand dreams
tearing us apart
remembered us another
fond goodbye

heaven emptied
soundless
as once I love you spoke
beyond the clouds –
this tempest
to become
a message undelivered
stills the lover’s heart
where tender plays
a long familiar
drum

meanotherplace

there was a place
I stayed too long
as water softly lifted
swept the bloom away
washed my petals far

from where was meant
a garden someone planted
just for me
a spring bouquet
of gladiola reds
and flutes of yellow promise
tilted by the sun
should have known the rain
would fill them with goodbye

dizzy then with longing
his eager crown to steal
folded green
to goldenrod
surrendered to the flood

there was a place
before I knew you
waited something more
redbud turning purple
wishes climbed beyond
meaning swirled in final dance
none of us could learn
seed denied the longing
gone to home alone

was there a moment then
love thought
we might be saved

I don’t know
it isn’t fair
the pulling things apart
rivers keep no memory
of the sea
overflowed the only banks
had a chance to hold
did I float away
asleep on yester dreams

hererighthere

we are fireflies
floating in mists of memory
caught in silence
kept with smiles
slight nods of the head
a tear misting the eye
lovers’ intimate knowing
and each of these short-lived wonders
teach us with sparkling glimpses
of truth from their tiny golden lights –
that darkness is a soft pillow
to slow our souls
from the overflow of sensations
as wonders to allow us breath
between the emotions –
and then marvel at each vision
a winking evening star
or a dew covered rose
born of our dreams

Spring did arrive with April’s feathered touch
in yellow blossoms much too rich for Fall –
but waited again the burnt Summer sun,
and grieved not a moment for Winter’s pall.

In melodies written on Sparrow’s wing,
the deep blue umbrella held fast the rain –
so long that time had ceased to remember
the cool December from whence longing came.

What season left behind is ours to keep
another page of eternity sweet –
would linger still in our heart evermore,
as snowflakes melted the first Summer heat.

Were yesterday’s promise so far away –
but want for remembrance of Winter today.

doyouknowmenow

count these days an echo
of ancient lullabies
a passage
made much sweeter
by the night

pressed between
the shadows –
rolled beneath the sun
lifetimes passed
into the failing light

spare the stars
your grieving
else they stay aloft too long
curs’ed dark –
a lantern burning bright

write
for me a reason
this tender world to hold –
longing frees
the poet heart
to flight

whispershome

at the end
to have even a stranger
hold his hand, close his eyes
fold his arms over his chest
and say a simple prayer
not to die alone

at the end
to catch the white light
without the weight of solitude
to dry her eyes, to calm her fear
to light a last candle together
not to die alone

at the end
to speak of my far away family
to dream aloud of angels
to believe life was worth it, leaving no trace
except a stranger remembering my voice
not to die alone

at the end
to have someone mourn
look fondly at a photograph
in an album or on the wall
a tombstone engraved with love
not to die alone

was said
there’ll be another time
I wonder if that’s true
when I will find you waiting here
when I shall come to you
when I will read
and you will write
our words will spill the same
how many lives may pass as none
to wonder why we came

you feel it now
I know it’s real –
this longing in my soul
was made for words and words will come
how is that you know
I read it once  (you taught me well)
how could that ever be
another time (of all we know)
a place of destiny
there are words
and there are words
that’s how I’m bound to you
as breath to breath
as earth to sun
I know this much is true
I’ll find you when
we touch
we love
we dream

I love that smile
it’s been a while
through times of disbelief
you knew me then
and now again –
the smell of burning leaves
would rivers know
the way to home –
will bring you back to me
