summer-days-small

was the first
and no one knew us
by names we’d worn
before
battlegrounds
were crusted with our sins
there was smoke
before the leaving –
saw you dance
upon the dawn
tender fell my silent
tears again

there was song
I thought I knew it –
drifted o’er the pines
and faded into prayers
of thankfulness
echoes of remember
settle round me now –
as quiet wills
my lonely heart
to rest

whereverIam

mother calls
on sunday
while daddy listens in
catching up –
it seems we’ve done it all
someone had a baby
someone said hello –
fifty years of loving
to recall

strung the line
for forty feet –
sheets out in the rain
a cigar box
of memories to share
everything
(the best of me)
sits in spools of rhyme
the night is lost
when I don’t
find you there

there’s a piece of thread
nearly gone –
and jeans I shouldn’t wear
just beyond the reach
of mystery
beyond the hold
of all I love –
another morning news
the moon is wanting in –
let him be

. . .

essenceme

strange the way
forever feels
as morning warns us home –
before the night
(is wrestled)
from the bed
blooms are falling
(lazy)
reminders just the same
are fit inside a suitcase
(something someone said)

presence found
in golden pools –
perfume (once you loved)
is mine to keep –
these souvenirs (of time)
brush against my longing
when passed me
in the dark

were e’er there proof
(I knew) of one
divine

stories spilled
in silence –
as messages of light
reveal the ways
as years (we fall) between
whispers
(o I love you)
remain with me
tonight –
swept beyond my sleeping
(where you) dream

wanderinghome

smaller I
the future staying –
a girl was run
into the night
and saved beneath
the moon returning –
to breathe of life
into my words

brushed to vine
the truth in loving –
as tears gone dry
where sorrow rolled
a river toward the end
of nothing
dare I take
my heart – my own

to know of these
to feel for something
more than I
the light became

storyme

between the cracks
where summer sweats
remembrance of the winter
as pink
our favored mittens –
(yesterday)
were granted us permission
to take of all we have
caught us up
in moments
 – breath is stealed
away

were sorrows
not so many
tho bliss is kept apart
pressed into the creases
a destiny betrayed
honey bees are floating
out beyond the storm
love is come –
forgiven what we never could
repay

. . .

whoamItoknow

beneath this fragile
knowing –
splinters pressed into
the place of solace come
and who will know
of thought I never
spent to verse
words left out to dry
where time is gone
you must have seen me
fly

above the trees
between the clouds
beyond the reach of song
how many lives
awaited
for us here
I can’t be sure
I told you once
some things I can’t forget
– the color of your eyes
between my tears

tell me now
as you must know –
of moments
we have passed
when promised us a life
beyond these years
carry my
beleaguered soul
into the place of hands
hold my name
within the heart
you own

. . .

thru and thru ~

returnedforthisenough

beyond the ways
already known –
fates are curved just so
ashes bloomed
to gardens red
I knew
you’d find me here
forgotten by
each measure of regret
as verses meant to cut us
thru and thru

beyond the pond
where stillness lay
in wait for any reason
as ripples from this passing
love is spread
beyond the warmth
of memory –
I can’t believe you came
a golden glow
as destinies are wed

. . .

that holds my song ~

remainders

for this touch
to trade
the evening news
a voice I swear I know
sits within
the meadow of my soul

reminding me
of seasons past
times I couldn’t stay
surviving
for another –
to remember me
this way

in sheets
of softest flannel
tiny yellow blooms
are wrapped against
the place
that holds my song
just beyond the distance
sparrows fill the trees –
where dreams are lost
to others
I belong

soft the swell
of silence
asleep beneath the bed
wherein the past
is tempt to keep me here
violins are playing –
as crickets cry amen
flannel wills the darkness
disappear

. . .

willing

were truth
by time rewritten
to know my soul by name
weary came a prophet
to declare
the gifts of right
and righteousness –
eternity shall keep
lest paths we walked
by faith
be never shared

who shall fall
to find me –
sins I wore again
are faded as the golden
winter wheat
who shall dare
receive of these –
arms are opened wide
allowing of a song
no longer sweet

of almost there
another tune –
are lines forgotten still
the way made long
tho who can say for sure
what of this
for waiting –
was worth the turning back
into the known
unknowing to endure

. . .

this way ~

stay (2)

stay the night
unburdened
by where has gone
the day –
as pieces of our past
are put away

into the realm
of all I am –
what more
we might become
the ways to home
and I
your only one

as stilled
before the waking
to heaven one more time
the light has shifted
now –
as one divine

was come for me
and waited more than breath
the years have left
– to find the key
where’er the lock
be kept

forsaken not
the telling –
were love to reason why
words have lost
their meaning
– as have I

daylight beams
in silent streams
across the place we lay
as I remember
once before –
forgetting you
this way

. . .
