summer-days-small

was the first
and no one knew us
by names we’d worn
before
battlegrounds
were crusted with our sins
there was smoke
before the leaving –
saw you dance
upon the dawn
tender fell my silent
tears again

there was song
I thought I knew it –
drifted o’er the pines
and faded into prayers
of thankfulness
echoes of remember
settle round me now –
as quiet wills
my lonely heart
to rest

. . .
