guard this heart
as was your own
for surely once it did
beat within the timbre
of your drum

sewn into the measure
of melodies made one
hidden by the secrets
of the rain

fell asleep
along the way
and rocked
the cowboy home –
rushed beyond the canyons
to the sea

fluted as a lullabye
hummingbird to gull –
floating west
a message to divine

perfumed nights
betrayed the chill –
of catfish salamander
cedars sworn to dance
beside the wind

warmest crush
of honeybees
swarm above the waves –
strained into the whisper
was told of you
and me

this more than for wanting
a sweet apprehension –
as stems folded double by bloom
burst through the cracks
of fear unsurrendered
are holes where heaven
shines through

tis more than the morning
and sunlight defended
webs strung as diamonds
to light
shivers and ceilings
altered by grace
delicate whispers –
a voice in the night

a glow on the hearth
a flame in the heart
an ember of all that has been
strained in the living –
sitting fire to life
waiting as grace
rushes in

tis more than belief
in a miracle once
for moments – eternity shines
richer the graden run over
by weeds –
as bliss hanging low
on the vine

help me
to give you
the music of making
more than one sunrise
more than one
song

leaves
the color
of jasper and topaz
bloody red color of choice
as I was
written to sunsets
before

painted to circles
and splashes of light
outside the lines
remained
of the heart

chased as a feeling
from shadow
to shade
cooled in the places
you are

favored companion
white linen tapers –
a wind of a whisper
somewhere

fearless to fly
past the edge
of remember
confession of colors –

tis the only
we dream

of light
burns paisley to shadow
forward and back
as waltz into flame

the memory of heat
at the heart of surrender ~
a warning spilled soft
from yet silent
mouths

sonnets etched
in the rush to remember
black velvet coats
of royal recall

skirted the night
in search of another
saved from detection ~
where burning
we sailed

if e’er the time
of compromise
or choice
I couldn’t make
to cut into the petal
for the robin’s sake

as pardon for the mayfly
a summer more
in sleep
gathered not to locust
seven deep

tis not my way
for choosing
the perfume o’er
the fin
feathers – which to fly
and which to swoon

glories seem to find a way
when all the rest
have died
to fashion of a web
tho not of gloom

were one to break
I surely would
for grief of places gone
as Friday
mourns the Monday
all week long

as fields
denied the flower
remember her always
purple dress
and swaying with the breeze

consequence
of letting go
the universe allows
but who shall know
of choices
I am none

were e’er the time
be written
for one more breath or bud
take of me
and let the seeds
burst red with love
divine

above my door
and I won’t make you move
already there
is family on the porch
feathered friends
and mandolins
breast to breast
to stone –
twilight takes
whatever
I confess

stitch a coat
from verses wrote –
letters to the trees
are lying now in wait
beneath my bed
sealed with ruby smudges
such a perfect shade
of kiss –
willed to rhyme
made silent by a sigh

fragrant
each becoming to the earth –
where once was died
pain of falling forward
into bliss
still the tender bower
of an ever-lasting love
wishes mine eternal
to exist

as breath aware
of something more
rushing through the trees
sweet perfume
of wildest muscadine
wisdom of the weakest
stories passing on –
wills the heart remember
every time

the soul was full
as light so bright
betrayed our sense of loss
held beyond the moment
of goodbye
wrapped in sheets
of wilderness –
tempted by the stars
dare I dream
and never question why

the flowers bloom
unnoticed –
the mockingbird to lust
as wonder wakes
unwilling to forget
tells the story just begun
life beyond this dream –
love is light becoming
bliss awaiting yet

december sits
in last year’s clothes
somewhere in the closet
patent leather shoes
and gabardine
woolen slacks
I hate them so –
you’ll never see me
wearing
gloves to match my scarf
to match my coat

barefeet stretch
into the cool –
boots along the hallway
bend me down a pair or two
will keep me here
til spring
winter winds
my story know –
talking through the window
frost the mirror –
tempt my soul to wing

dimestore pearls
and chapstick hearts
pictures crowd the mantle
proof of days
were seasons past the same
roses stand with brittle heads
bowed to prayer
for patience –
lacey lips are calling me
by name

practiced hands
deny the cold
to cup the fragile blossoms
breathed again a miracle –
as memory of the sun
softest hope
remembers now –
the promise of another
summer rain to save us
beyond december
comes

steal the honey
trade my voice –
of Persian poets to linger
rubbing rubber bands
across my rhyme
soothe the beast
of wanting
for wilder –
this retreat
into the nevermore
evading me

of opal song
and rapture willed
beyond this brief existence
uttered soft
a language yet I know
silver words
to cut the gums –
swallowed without question
for where the poison sits
when it is done

mark my way
with berries –
black the pathway ripe
curs’ed be
each memory of briar
dare the day to waking
messy traps
and all –
lure me back with poems
written here

time is but
a squinty eye
staring at the world –
fleeting was his vision
to behold
a history no one could see
paths of fear and fable
blankets pulled aside
to let the cold

listen now
within the greys
shadows sometimes fall
and I shall lean
into your line of love
knowing
as I always have
the tempting taste of sorrows
worn into this wonder
of women wearing wings

will to me
the water
where once the well
went dry –
close the book
when leaving here
but let the cup
remain
