give me to blue jeans
jasper and jasmine
tiny white pearls weaved into thread –
storied collection
of people and places
someone I miss
was somebody said

of boys and their business
pretention of men
and swore they could be
what they were in my eyes
angels (and demons)
traded a lifetime
of moments
and secrets
and sighs

breathe of the pages
the sweet smell of paper
rhyme
where there never was rhyme
flight resurrected
from limestone and sparrow
was heaven made whole –
these pieces of time

forgiven myself
for acts of transgression
felt something more
than the warm rise of breath
old silver coins
float in the fountain –
eternity more
than a strange
little death

spare me to words
gifts of forever –
are written to places
of cotton and steel
get me to home
while the crops are still standing
let me down easy
the stories are real

other times
of those I knew
much more (than I could see)
how swift the words
to take me by surprise
(wished for more)
than one last time
could never hold my reason
fell to places
just beyond (your eyes)

tangerine and jasper suns
muscadine and paper
was more (to me) for knowing
a safer side of truth
without a plan to understand
when told of ancient places
ribbons now (the color
of my shoes)

loving roads
and fourteen stones
between the house and heaven
rows and rhyme
to screen doors shut (behind)
mysteries of make believe
who are you (I wonder)
took the road for leaving
with something (still)
to find

morning shakes
as living takes
a sunrise (more than needed)
to lie against the night
and count my scars
once or twice the coming round
my wilderness to wander
slept beneath (the window
talking with) the stars

secrets spared
the room to share
and some things can’t be given
e’er presence
give us lives (to comprehend)
mourning doves confess to love
and wait the night another
as quiet stills the twilight
with knowing you
(again)

fertile now
these cotton fields
endless rows of waiting –
sometimes the stars
sit low within her legs
counting back with disbelief
nights before
the harvest –
barns already empty
apron worn to rags

frigid halls
and ice cold floors
chatter of the aged
men to speak of women
down the way –
dreamers sleep in twisted knots
whispers of another
and what became of heroes
blue and grey

dearest thought of
morning strolls –
rusted nails and ribbon
boxes rift with hats we never wore
stretch the line
from post to porch
mark the miles for minding
carve our days
and make of love
our chore

renew the vow
of infamy –
seven more than sisters
held to certain fortune
I remain
silver spoons
and let my lesson
keep me from returning –
dared by demons
watching now
to know the way
I came

in the mist
that was my yesterdays
ten thousand silent birds
– beyond my will to hear
are singing now
but for the night
of wing’ed flight
to worlds beyond my birth
was never meant
a path to me somehow

speckled green
and tattered blues
patchwork bursts of reason
stitched with time
but worn the rest away
hung to line
the veil between
here I am and ever
– someone speaks
and I don’t know their name

shutter speed
as autumn peaks
to fall beneath the cedars
climbing up
to make my bed beyond
little lights
to prick my skin
– who am I to tell
when left outside the gate
a moment long

pressed into
the winter wheat
smelled of other courage
and where our
dreams have gone –
I couldn’t say
leaving takes the
longest time
when all the crops come in
– the mist is rising slowly
to melt my fears
away

. . .

Stay as I’ve wanted
to folded remembrance –
as an essence of perfume
I no longer wear.
Of far away places
I can’t seem to loosen –
their hold on my being
was written
somewhere.

As the day I was born –
the night of conception
when someone spoke softly
my name to the trees.
Flowers were open
as evermore waited –
the echoes of loving
my own to release.

As ripples of forest –
bursting with cedar
boxes lined up to the right
of the door.
Memories passed by the way
of the garden –
where golden white shutes
are planted once more.

Whispers of promise
and who I’d be someday
when all the rest failed –
I’d come round to home.
As wings breach the distance
e’en now in the darkness –
someone waits easy
the long night
alone.

long before
you knew my name –
I knew of you somehow
as fated brush
of ink to skin –
was love as love allowed
was all you were
and breath to me
ageless
endless
sweet

I can’t recall the one
I was
before you came
for me

of silences
unbroken
by the restlessness of truth
~ fingers curved to pieces
of my soul

where feminine
these ashes blow
around my thoughts to gather
breathed into the places
I am whole

as given name
another one
as Mary came before
and swept the corners clean
of circumstance

faith beyond
her grieving ~
still her fragrance looms
as secrets spill the night
with tenderness

in cords of white
the willing page
awaits the gentle hand
as strained
between the brothers
falling down

if ever this
the moment was
to understand our ways
~ as thorns were burst
to blossom
in our stead

her hair was spun
of gypsy moths
and weaved with ribbon
ruby red –
her eyes
a shade of cappucine
gave life to every
dream or dread

she spoke in words
not one could know
a language
only she could speak
a universe
where all was love –
would curse the sailor’s
longing – weak

her fragile hands
a raven’s breast
fluttered soft the beat
of care
a blossomed white
from passions rose –
as essence bloomed
a lover’s fare

she breathed
ten thousand years of light
and knew of things
most men could not
she harbored tears
for moments lost –
and spoke with kind
of love
forgot

what time was hers
no one could say
another birth from dying crossed
what kiss was made
to give away

what ruby red
a gypsy moth

bound not to fret
o’er sorrows passed by
or bones where wings used to be
turned not by loss
to remember the gain
or the promise
of eternities

saved not to verse
or hurried by life
as was gifted
to days muddled thru
forgotten the lust
of a long ago wish
or stars pinned by dreams
to the blue

grieved not by touch
no longer the same
or visions of hope almost gone
a path through the woods
by home a new way –
remembrance
of time walked alone

cured not by longing
or stilled by regret
taking where arms never could
keep you much longer
in yesterday’s chains –
and garner your words
understood

deemed not
by prophecies
left for another
or stories retold of your youth
asking of consequence
come to decide
as somebody’s version
of truth

birthed to illusion
of mysteries freed –
as futures are mourning this loss
warmed not the comfort
of sleep yet to come
or whispers negated
by moss

Author’s Note: For much of my life, I’ve been awakened
by words, flooding from far off places. Quite often, the result
is something like this. I refer to these as Emily moments ~
and Emily words. I’m good with that, as long as it never requires
a change in hairstyle. 🙂

there’s a rub
to the waking
when the stillness
seems old ~
when last night’s
surrender to dreams
carries on

the coffee
indifferent
to the ways I have come ~
and places unnoticed
on the way back alone

before I was fallen
my sorrows to spread ~
when searching the darkness
to free ~

pieces
I should have
committed to writing ~
robbed of the story
ne’er meant to be

as I was
for a moment
somewhere still I remain
where we spoke
of lifetimes ~
now faded away

and held
for eternities
breath unto breath ~
so easy the falling
do you remember
that day
