knowing

of those who know
are not so much –
and some are sworn to silence
lifetimes gone
with knowledge
on their tongue –

waiting verse
or page appear
waiting questions asking
which
and where
and who am I
to know

tell me
of the evermore
swims beneath the river –
of mountains
just beyond the reach
of storm

tell me
are there hearts that bleed
rather than surrender –
souls that shift the night
in search of love

where and then
I’ve come to know –
all was never written
somewhere tides
have cleared the lowly shore
galaxies colliding
in the ruse
of letting go –
lanterns blaze to mark the way
we know

tell me
are there others
searching as I am –
caught in life
and dreaming of the sea

. . .

songs of forever ~

stirring

perfume sits
in hand-me-down flannel
soft winter scenes
of snowflake
and pine

nestles my heart
in the wind ‘cross the mountains
yesterday stories
come home

how can you know
of moments so easy
lay me down here
at the edge of the night
pour to my purpose
the songs of forever
breathing returned to us
now

to touch
without touching –
unrelenting these mercies
drifted on clouds
to embarass the moon

visions of some place
some other
somewhere

yesterday stories
come home

to leave ~

if bitterness
should brush against
this tenderness
of soul

then take of me
to leave
before my time

and rise again
renewed by love
in yellow daffodils

beyond the fence
that held me
to this life

refuge ~

just beyond the shadows
an orphaned light goes dim
and in the moment after –
sweet release
of solitude
and settled in
the burdens of the day
are swirling now –
ashes in my cup

cedar squeaks
in loving sigh –
perilous surrender
purged a place of darkness
from my thoughts
slowly then –
a favored hymn
rises from my center
to warm against the cool
that is the night

. . .

mutterings ~

within the realm
of going –
the music of just when
the light was shifted –
someone
called my name

within the sound
of words unsaid –
touch already known
to take me where no roads
were ever come

within the soul
of just one kiss
a sigh
becomes a sigh –
as tears embrace
the night with aquamarine

mutterings
of what shall be
if e’er our fears
be lost –
as moments stretched beyond
the place we live

watch the sky
unwritten there –
the failings of tomorrow
seek to know
of everything
and none

speak my name
before the sun –
is risen to the promise
taste the morning air
where I am gone

. . .

gather me ~

recall to me
the winters past
of times –
and truth and reason
of moments more defined
and less restrained

by what was said
and who would grieve
our questions of redemption
when wondered of a time
when all was love

restore these fields
of innocence –
a lazy Thursday morn –
and nowhere soon to go
that cannot wait

gather me
to all you have –
a destiny forthcoming –
a place no longer
shadowed by the stars

of graces
we’ve forsaken
in the want for something less
would progress
take the place of times
we loved

fragile consolation
to all we might have known
when passed this way
again –

another time

give to me
the memory
of years unfated now
tho dreams can only take me
where I go

longing wears
a purple dress
the shade of which I love
and worries not for sins
already paid

familiar ~

long before
this time was come
another breath we shared –
verses died
but no one missed
the sound

eager
as were hands to trace
treasure to the map –
tho crossing in the quiet
wore us down

kept the faith
to meet with wish
returning by the night –
tho never have I seen
you smile
that way

presence
sure to linger
wherever we might be
as life to strain
the vow of yesterday

between the life
I live (to love)
and the one I write about –
tis another me –
another restless will

somewhere I can go to
when nothing else
makes sense –
the only thing familiar
is the still

dragons ~

of choices
long forsaken
to the wilderness of age –
and the chance to know again
was almost gone

when in the still
of wanting –
a time I found my way
and leaned into eternities
with you

unnoticed complication
to dwell on
might have beens –
had stars been lined
along another blue

had waters
risen higher than
the mark beneath my stone
or weighted more than wishes
to my skies

dreamers swear
to know me well
of words that fall so easy
spreading in their wake
my mystery

years
of almost silent
tears I never cried
tho rarely now –
I speak of you aloud

just the same
as somewhere else
I let my passions loose –
a place already gathered
to my soul

verses float
the smokey gale
dragons roost the cedars
words denied
are coming round
again

. . .

dare ~

dare to let me love you
as the swallow loves the spring
as winter mourns the smell
of burning leaves

dare to let me hold you
as blue defies the clouds
as storms to brace
against the night
we knew

dare to let me touch you
til the final flame is gone –
as secrets spilled
to shadows
round our bed

dare to let me understand
the magic that you make –
stories yet unwritten
to your dreams

dare to let me know you
as I knew you times before
and roads we took –
awaiting
to arrive

dare to let me kiss you
to taste your words as mine
and live on breath –
was just before
my name

letters from the spring ~

to places
you are part of
every one – in every way
to dreams
where others sleep alone
I wandered yesterday

to lexington in autumn
endless fields
of winter grain
where friends around me gathered –
seeking refuge from the rain

ribbons kept to letters
nights I read them
one by one
– and listened
as the sirens wailed
into the dying sun

you were there
and I was fearless –
every story bound to mine
with no worry for tomorrow
– or a longing
undefined

of faraway confessions
I’ve forsaken death for love –
was a moment
you were with me –
do you remember where
that was
