from the first
a whisper came –
beheld me to november
to wishes
(you remember)
touch divine
a barefoot side of heaven –
as once I thought you knew
a dusted floor
where sunlight split
the pines
a cedar box
of rusted fame
with ne’er a truth to carry
the key is gone –
but for the lock I saved
china plates
will nothing match
these shades of sarsaparilla
blessings of
another time –
forgave
crooked boards
and needs to tend –
tho who will understand
the ways I came
to walk these fields alone
tempted into trouble
morning warms the same
the night so still –
that all the stars have gone

let me go on
sweetly –
let pains this path distill
as sorrows met
with dandelion sighs
let me go or keep me
I don’t care – won’t beg you stay
the road is turning
north on
southern skies
let me go
or let me linger
let me teach
or let me learn
where light is spilled
yellow by the gate
grieve me not the leaving –
had I known where this
might end –
a day beyond
the first I was
to wait
let me go
I won’t bother
asking more of you
than this –
the weight
that is your stutter
on my skin
stay another moment –
I’ve forgotten all I said
free me
with this loosing
let me go –
again

were memories
becoming this –
pieces not for barter
shall keep to nest
the coldest night we’ve known
guarded not for staying –
we kept inside too long
ancient fires to burn away
ashes from the stone
songbirds weep
for something
lost upon the winds –
music plays
tho I can’t hear a thing
wasted now the wanting –
for all I should have said
– the chill is come
to wrap around
my spring

for every time
I knew –
another here awaiting
some presence
come to feel
me up with lies
of mercy me and mysteries –
who are you to tell
of words we used for love
I knew them well
for longing hurts
as nothing worse
than e’er I knew before
what questions hold not answers
of relief
bittersweet the falling
of what I know as truth
I dreamed you home
to nights beyond
this sleep
beyond this fearful
waking
some understanding lost
who shall sit the night
worth waiting for –
remembering another
when wishes lit the dark
I am here
the same as once
we were

numbers
and night birds
roosting in willows
crickets are crooning –
just past the light
echoes of where I was
one time too often
as lowly came home
another someday to bed
and spread to my quilt
hands to remember
touch not so young
I betrayed
kisses the first
will I know – will I ever
how many the last
will become

when bent the oak
to catch the sun –
the slightest truth undone
became of storms
as leaves might sometimes fall
innocence to touch the ground
truth to bear them up
wind to carry
lovers one and all
when moved the rush
of willing waves
cold their fearless cries
as dashed upon the rocks
a centaur fell
green as first the mossy banks
held their secrets long
pressed the way
along the summer swell
blossoms rest
beneath the bark –
pines are lonely here
still reach their bony fingers
toward the light –
tell me there
another tale
of where and when
and whether
we passed before
as shadows of the night

how can I know
of words begin
pretending there be more
would change the past
and clear the page
of verses writ
before
spoke aloud
and screamed sometimes
when longing takes me far
much further now
the silver shines
unbested by the dark
a dip into the wishing well
and things one time
I knew
would light the way
as I have come –
a stranger –
home to you
the journey of becoming
in fated black and white
a jaded note
I found somewhere
was passed to you tonight
do you know
the way they worry
the things they say sometimes
of ways I feel
I’ve found my way
into your every rhyme
held against
your darkest ink
tied to words unsaid
remember me
the way we were
the way I loved instead
of this I am
tho far it seems
for truth the poet yearns
retelling our begining –
another love
to learn

would give myself
I don’t know how –
of direction left to go
forgiven me a lie I understood
the lessons made
of leaving –
words don’t taste the same
time has left me waiting
as it should
touch reserves
a place beneath
the places I’ve become –
something I can’t tell
the way it is
as much a part
as red run deep
as dark my sleep to fear
dreams are nothing I’m prepared
to miss
seems as though
the past recalls –
just a road I took from here
returning to a destiny
I knew
sweet the folded
almost map –
tucked inside my heart
roads are meant to find me
finding you

within the reborn
dust of earth –
within these gentle grasses
whispers hide
as secrets gathered all
life begins
anew I find –
most every day awakens
to take my breath
before the evening call
verses read
to soothe the soul –
while memory – her mother
lies awake the night
to hear us breathe
quiet as the covenant
was made
before this passing
prayers are lost
– and still to love
we cleave
