going gone

was a whole lot better
then
they said –
the best of times behind
but the tank was full
and someone said
‘let’s go’

there are lines between
ten thousand more –
and days before the ocean
can crawl upon the windshield
with her lies

beg me to
surrender –
every secret I been sold
of empty eyes
and bedroom skies
I know them –
seen them fall

one winter’s eve
when frosted there
the dashboard cracked
beneath –
a sprig of holly
leaked into a song

can’t remember now
the words
you wrote me
down
lullaby for one –
I watched the stars

pass beyond the city lights
dinosaurs and
darling –
tell me there’s a heaven
where we go

dream direction

of ways I’ve known
how many lost –
counting down the years
how many paths
I wandered –
but to find you
here

longing cut
away the grain –
evidence revealed
of places
I had passed
along the
night

withheld my own
unknowing
 there was life
awaiting me –
as truth
my soul becoming
a love
I couldn’t see

withering

down from the city
what a pleasant surprise
to find you at home
on my porch –
drinking the last cup of coffee
I wonder
what comforts you now
the same as before

wishing you back
and chewing on pride –
leaning to moments
forgotten to miss
I’ll do your laundry
and know of your eggs –
how you like them
I don’t
but I keep them
for this

soap
the color
of new england roses –
sweaters and denim
have softened with age
habits have
taken me
longer for letting
go of the pieces –
a half written page

sealed to a life
I can barely remember
was a time
before –
I was me
spinning in circles
drunken illusion
of where – and of when
we were going
to be

pardon the mess
had I known you were coming –
might have baked you
a cake –

or burned the house down

 whiskey dreams

whiskey magnolias
and red rivers rising
carry me home
by way
of the south
eastward and skyward
take me Kentucky
where sunsets are gathered
to ferry me now

blackberry bruises
and two kinds of loving
made for me
saved for me
all I have known
fruit trees have taken
the worst of the winters
and words cling to pages
of story outgrown

passionate placement
of names before curses
sweet tea
and all day to dream –
light from the window
spills now the morning –
as love fills the places
we passed
in between

keep to your slumber
and I will be there –
tangled to threads
where reason fell through
dogwood and darling
nobody knows –
of roads I’m becoming
(winding my) way
back to you

. . .

choices

a wave
through the window
as life pulled away
for moments
your hand on the glass

reasons I’ve yet
to remember the same
– lifetimes returning
too fast

to eyes out of focus
grace without fear
to know
as I know
what was waiting
me here

were you lost
in that leaving
or felled by the light
as the sun burned a scar
to the glass

questions
unanswered

by distances come
in a blink –
was eternity known
left as a warmth
on a still fragile day
reason –
much harder
to own

a gift
when hands
found truth
in the touching –
a wave reconciled
to the last

last I was ~

Maybe it’s the writer’s place – to wander and to wonder. What one might push away as nothing really important, a writer will not. A writer knows that everything matters, from the smallest gesture, the slightest glance, the briefest kindness. Writers pay attention, and what others might forget, we remember.

From the time I was twelve, I’ve had a recurring dream. That dream (or series of dreams) has been at the core of so many of my writings. I refer to them as ‘the house dreams’ because the anchor for all of them is a house – a house I know (but couldn’t possibly know). I know the porch and the pantry, the place on the floor where the afternoon sits. I know the color (and feel) of the wallpaper (fading aubergine), and the steps from the porch to the gate, from the gate to the barn, and how many (when running) before the orchard. I know which boards creak, and which locks won’t lock.

There’s a small cemetery to the left of the front yard with a stone I haven’t the heart to read.

I don’t know where the house is, but if I were to find myself on any road within a mile of it, I would know just where to turn.  I’d surely recognize the sweetness of the air, the stillness on my soul.

A dear and old friend often asks about ‘the house’, and recently she made the comment, ‘you know that house is probably somewhere nearby – wonder who lives there’. To which, my immediate reply was “I do”.

If you believe in conscious unconsciousness, then you’ll understand when I say that I know that I’m dreaming when I’m there. I’ve spent many a night searching through boxes under ‘that bed’ looking for the thread that ties this life to that. And some nights, I’m so comfortable on ‘that porch’ that I hate the thought of returning.

Even now, I wonder what I tell them about you.

last_I_was

mysteries forgotten
by the seeker as she sleeps
remembered once
she wrote it down
or was that but a dream
left it on the table
as she was making up the bed
humming soft a tune
of faded love

comeround

was the coming back
they warned me once –
of summers without memory
perfume kept
so long –
the essence dried

of late nights
and slow rides –
rolling through the canyons
breezes blowing somewhere
far above

with big plans
and longer words –
listening to the water –
forgotten was the teller
to the tale

wishes fell
ten thousand miles
eternity retreating –
and leaving us as proof
of yesterday

longing
finds me here sometimes
lucid
constellations –
adrift somewhere above
the silent waves

whene’er I walk
the sea at dawn –
and wonder to the waves
what sailor might have sailed
from here
with not a thought to save

as restless spills
and ripples wash
from me the past is gone
tossed upon
some distant shore
or glistened still with foam

for one alone
and waited me
the journey to defend –
a story almost written
we surely tell again

as breezes blown
across my face –
my dress of cotton lace
remembers still
another time
I came to know this place

before the day
where sunset burned
as brightly as today –
where twilight danced above
the tides
to sweep my breath away

as silence keeps
a softer name than e’er I dare
repeat –
forgotten as were
broken shells
left scattered at my feet

rise and fall
and rise again –
be swift my love to learn
of messages rewritten here
awaiting our return

across the way
across the map –
dark and deep and dear
sighs are falling
somewhere else –
to echoes living here

came I here before daylight
alone with this sunrise
to watch the world
made new again –
and brushed across
the sky

more than once
was here I stayed
and woke
beyond the light
to places I had dreamed of
remembered to the night

I wondered
long to chances passed
and turns of wistful fate
of beauty
still becoming –
and I a moment late

tho not the first
I thought to times
my faith was sorely bent
to paths I might have taken home
and roads of good intent

how many dawns
spent looking back
without power to change a thing
to winters unforgiving
awaiting proof
of spring

to wonder why
it was to be
when came ~ another day
though not your plan
to leave again
another heart to save

with words
to match your rhythm ~
as language spilled to rhyme
we flew beyond the seeking
as geese into the night

wanting for a moment
never knew the way
we’d be ~
returning for each other
by way of memory

to know again
as once we were ~
when swore an oath to find
the way beyond the darkness ~
a moment so divine

we couldn’t stay
we wouldn’t say
lest words ~ our truth reveal
a mystery
we’d come again
this promise to fulfill

e’er destiny be less
than more
or fate betray our place
words denied a keeper
tales of breath and lace ~

as shadows failing
brushed aside by sighs ~
a lover’s curse
shall be the way remembered ~
as souls reborn to verse
