started here

it was a time
reserved for wishing
– the fields were flush
with grain
when a boy
of almost nothing
stood his ground

he dreamed in shades
of fourteen years
a girl behind the glass
found him
as he found her
leaning in

offered up a place to go –
 folded worlds of wonder
took no mind
to what they’d find
tears and joy
and laughter

sailing out
beyond the window pane

three months
down a dusty road
he found the nerve
for asking
far more than this
more than lives could bear
took her for a midnight ride
down across the border
trading rings
and counting stars
between

another then
and moments past
without the need
for telling
what was left
and all a heart might hold
rockabye
and baby –
let the buntin stay
for all we know
was this
our chosen way

now again
the road becomes
a path someone forgot
leaves are falling
scarlet
round my bed
reminders sit in flannel
sheets of gabardine
where he was
she fills
the time between

Author’s Note: In September 1955, a man and a woman shared
their first kiss. He was 23 and she only 14. Three months later,
they married, and two months after that, he was discharged from the Air Force.
Seven days later, he started a job he would work for 52 years. Nine
months after that seven days, I was born. Still they yearn for
one more kiss, and I am blessed on this day – when they celebrate the
start of so very much love.

Story is everything.

dreams
 here becoming
of moments allowed –
from times
unforgotten –
the ways we are now

as a drink
from your waters –
as an ache
to your touch
your kiss lingers lightly
– as a haunting
of love

where I was
now I’ve come
with all that I own
confessing
to shadows –
a long ways from home

in the places
you wander –
do you see me sometimes
in the movement
of venus –
where heavens
align

where we were

how sweet
the light of love divine
a wing’ed
to my flame
without a thought
for promises
by name

you come again
as e’er you might –
another down
the road
an angry man
resolved
to getting old

of distant stars
an ancient way –
I strain to understand
forgave the past
a softer place
to land

knowing
as I know you –
a shadow
splits the dark
forgotten how I knew
of where to start

waitingdestinies

joseph
takes the twelve o’five
and wonders once again
to times removed –
a storm is moving in
of other girls
and weekend worlds
who would tell their mother
they’d met a guy
with bedroom eyes
one day

a sold out car
and not too far
to go before the leaving
clouds are gathered now
he understands
of one who waits
the other side
sits the night alone
searching through
the paper –
for memories
of home

for lines
to fit her story
tells she hasn’t told
a touch to bear
– some other hand
to hold

the cold night carries
whispers
in wait for words unsaid
joseph sees beyond
the road ahead

with wonder
when he’ll find her
when at last –
the cooling rain
a seat no longer empty
– a want to match
her name

. . .
Author’s Note: Inspired by my continuing fascination
with the ‘while I was waiting for the bus invitational’. Thanks
for the kick, Stephen.

longing

stories wait
the telling –
as solace binds the soul
light is rent in service
to our will
a secret rarely uttered
sleeps with us the night
longing for a time
to hold us still

became of this
our faith returned
when all the rest was lost –
delayed my breath
 to rob this verse
of rhyme
remembered not
to passing –
or universes crossed
 beholding to a promise
so divine

another day
some other life
a change to all we’ve known –
as carried I
your touch beneath
my sleeves
 a history rewritten
shall follow me the dawn –
 your heart
is beating somewhere
I can’t see

once_as_I

forever
to wait –
seems not that much more
than was passed
while I waited a day
remembered to moments –
and there you are still
how easy these years
fell away

forgotten
the place
of beginning again
as seasons
now folded between
nights held with wonder
for times we drew dear
– are passed
as a sigh into dreams

suppose
and I will –
every morning til then
wrapped as allowance
to stars long ago
how will I find
what I waited so long
– to touch
what I already know

buzzing

as chatters
of communion –
rush beneath the wake
heaven sleeps in silk
beside the grey
wing’ed soldiers
guarded now – the rights
of letting go
speak as one
within the serenade

as wings
above the rising
blush the story told
how fleeting we –
to fade before the light
were longing
but another –
price we had to pay
dreams are all we’ve left
to stem the fight

beg not
this moment’s best
to win –
our presence
to remember
the way the tulips
crowd against the lawn
the way the mourning
sits atop
sheets of shining steel
to grieve the missing soul
his only one

for purpose
was I waiting –
flush against the sky
loved as one
another dream
of lifetimes passing by
washing down and over me –
caused my heart
to weep
an angel come
and all I knew of heaven
was his name
gathered me
to moments
without shame
the start of just beginning –
ageless as my soul
feathers floating
sorrows
down below

difference

for every now
another passed
as rain into the wind
as whispers
no one noticed how they rang
forgotten now
the essence –
of almost never was
how close we were
before the morning came

for every sorrow
suffered –
the joy of once to touch
as breath to grieve
the keeping of her days
names and places
read aloud
how clear the songs we are –
moments worn
by memory
into grace

stillness

skylight confession
to somebody’s baby
and times
we held long
the edges of dark
neath the pull of november
graces come clean
and settled as words
on our heart

willing reflection
on promise unreal
an ending beginning
to keep us
as one
fell to the altar
of all we would will –
merged into soul
not our own
