was driving me
the way to home
back through the writing
of a poem –
along the road –
as verse – a tangled mess was made
he kissed me first
beneath the grey –
of where we’d spent the night before
above the loft to read each line
told the dark
our wishes
(and every one came true)

as secrets passed
my hopes I buried
in stripes (that were his blue)
the scent of sunlight
tangerine and cedar –
loved his fingers in my hair
and wondered then
what it would feel like
with him gone
would surely make him famous
in my dreams

he told me once
he was a cowboy (somewhere else) –
wore a gun inside his vest
dared me turn away
confess my only crime –
of a time I might have stayed
moonlight shining –
discretion to the night
moved my eyes
along his spine –
into the place of clove
and clover (blossomed sweet) –
musk and music
madness of my own –

evermore to witness
safe beneath my skin –
leaves and branches (destiny)
as moments
passed between
became another life –
reinvented him
to me

a way of coming home ~

Stranger times
have come around
longing fills my soul –
and a flame
where moths encircle
claims my heart

Secrets sworn to January
breathe the frigid air
reminders of a faraway –
love I waited for

Quiet has no sense of wrong
kneelers at the cross
as late I’ve come
to wonder where you are –
the rush of waves
of falling stones –
feathers paint the rafter
a raven took my name
just yesterday

Timber clings to canyons
where another steeple built –
and long days
on the road
are almost gone –

Music strums the radio
reminders of the heat –
windows down and all night long
to sing

Sometimes
the echoes crush me
with their way of coming home
like pieces of the plans
we took along –

Heaven
keeps a piano tuned –
a fiddle by the bed
stars to pry –

yet somewhere now
they dance

inheritance ~

for sure
I’ve been around a bit
not much I haven’t seen
I’ve watched as rivers
rolled to flood –
and crushed the land between
I’ve seen them pass
and heard them speak –
there’s sorrow here for sale
peaches sold by basket –
and berries by the pail

my favorite jeans
are twelve years old –
my softest scarf – eighteen
there’s perfume on my dresser
– older still than me
a passion
that my granny cursed
wrung her hands to old
a walking stick
my grandpa carved –
permission to let go

there’s a coffee cup
I value most
the color of the sea –
was cracked the day that I was born
and saved at once for me

of satin sheets I never use –
and cotton ones worn through
dried to sun
beneath the lines
no other place would do
for sharing lives
and speaking minds –
curs-ed fate of men
spoke of pies
and nursery rhyme
til twilight fell again

long nights
on a crooked porch
tunes I know by heart
fingers press the strings
that were his voice

just beyond
the front gate –
there’s music I can hear
something moves
forever knew
a welcome waited here
to greet the past – to hold the cup
was raised another day
I say the same
I love you –
each time I kneel
to pray

on ailing floors
a crystal glass –
and none of this is mine
inheritance of loving
moves silent
through the pines

morning glories ~

come before
was nothing here
but wishes for the weary –
lights beyond the evergreen
a softer place to fall
amazing feel of coming home –
arms and legs (remember)
warmed in me
as fire burned
beneath a hearth of coal
lullabies and willow trees –
who’ll drop by on Sunday
to hang the sheets
and tend the ailing fence
to sew the fields anew with thyme
(rows were never straighter)
come and I’ll be waiting
on the porch

to bring you in
this old screen door
still moans for nights forsaken –
as roses push against the post
your welcome home to view
not a word (forgiven) –
who cares for why you waited
what matters now
is where you lay (me down)
as midnight falls
in amethyst turned blue
(by morning glories)
nightbirds dare to question me again –
for secrets whispered (quiet came)
without a thought for reason –

returning this familiar star
to wish away my words

still when I was leaving ~

eternity
(it seemed to me)
was just beyond the doorway
and spoke not in a language
I could hear
sang while I was silent
still when I was leaving
sweet caress remembered now
for reasons I forgot

I couldn’t move for moving
wouldn’t tell another lie
no matter to the plans
I’d put away ~
truth was more than looking
in a mirror at tomorrow
more than seeking purpose
in a deck of gypsy cards
spread between
the dusty wood ~ a lampshade
made of fortunes

voices pull to everything
choice I didn’t know
turning toward eternity
a door beyond the door
fate ~ once more to question
but I can’t hear
a thing

nothing matters ~

easy now
the first caress
of chamomile and flannel –
proof the sun was marked to fade
before the crops were in

cedar burned
and there we go
drifting down the valley
smoke against the timbers
loves we should have known
before the chill
before the rash
of centipedes foretelling
the strength to come
assaulting our regrets

hold me close
keep me warm –
tell me nothing matters
but the sound of two hearts meeting
in the dark

in the freeze
before tomorrow comes
wrap your love around me
breathe in me your summer
find in me
your sun

past forgiving ~

the fields
were past forgiving
forgotten how it felt to drink
would that they grow
in shade along
the (southern) fence
was not for me to say
not for me to choose
(I would)
who should come inside
reprieve for sorrows
suffering
(but for a little while)

there were no words
for thirst
much more than love
we couldn’t ask
I held your head
against my faithful heart
and cooled your ragged lips
with tears

(too old for crying)

but for a moment
there was no other place
a world that moved between
the time we shared
(we’ll share again)
(will I remember this)

I wonder
can you see me ~
do you smell the dogwood blooms
what comfort these my hands
will make for you
(do you know)
your shirt is torn
but still the blue becomes your eyes
and all I see are skies
beyond the harvest
(we should have flown)

listen now
(I won’t say much
of anything)
we’re expecting storms tonight
I’ll hold you near (til then)
will rock you as the
thunder booms
everything
will be alright

just close your eyes
and dream
(of rushing rivers)
I’ll wake you
when the tin roof
starts to cry

moksha ~

so fine the pattern
weaved beneath the heavens
(what I know)
is sometimes tempered
by what I’ve chosen
(there to see…)
denying every proof
(was proof required…)
echoes might have been
the mountain falling
(though even now, I swear…
I hear a robin sing)…

what mantra I remember
was it just a name (I’d spoke before)
or only in the place
(my mind perceives)…
when kissed your hands…
and took your breath (in mine)…
was providence succumb
to nothing more than moments (clear)
forever gone
(before forever knew)…

I’ve said before
love remains in what we choose (to keep…)
would I choose to be a dreamer…
seeing poppies
bloom from stones
(or symphonies of light
within your smile)….

I’ve wondered (as I do)…
and wandered (more because)
between reality and somewhere
(else) created…

I used to know
the sound of maples
(before the turning red…
before a branch was broke…
(the forest burns)…
I blused beneath the secret
of the oldest sycamore
(cicadas stormed across a willing sky)…

of every sign
(lightning bugs have gone for good)…
how much the weight (a whisper)
for a sigh…….

I knew the reasons then…
(and still I love)
the warmth of autumn
(holding in December)…
what silence said
no words could guarantee…

I knew the way to you…
(and I was me)

divinity
a moment (manifesting)…
tears of joy
(could have been the rain)…

eulogy ~

it’s not my way to pick apart
the pieces that are left
to savor precious drops
still in the glass
to lie awake
imagining another time to be
would rather live to love
til life is passed

there’s nothing here
for keeping
I’m just a poet
passing through
without a word
I was to find
but loved a time or two

made my way
and made my name
a woman I would be ~
laughter echoes
somewhere else
in waves of ecstasy

for age shall never worry
or grief be held for long
meadows may grow thicker
for paths I wandered on

before my fate is ended
one more verse
shall I recite
wherever love ~
the story falls
to pages I shall write

with the apostles ~

I’ve been known
to seek religion
in the backseat of a Buick –
to find my home
in lonely nights
turned blue by love’s regret.
I’ve toasted life
with dime store wine
and knelt with the apostles –
sang Jesus Loves
til I was drunk
on bartered dreams
and bets.

I wanted more
and took the chance –
gambled with my share of loss.
I took a spin
on fate’s long haul
and willed the rest away.
I’ve burnt my knees
on sacred men –
and damned their will
in leaving.
Whispered hymns
of longing –
this body to betray.

Too many times
and then once more –
was bruised and for another wept.
Ashes into laundromats
and longing spilled to verse.
Poems filled with evermore –
a candle barely flickers
to hide the smile
I wear for you –

there lies the truth
I curse.
