The-Early-Evening-Mist-Orton #1

remember now
a twilight touch
(a sigh
the same as rain)
whispering a promise
to remain –
beyond the ease
of leaving
was the will
for letting go
were ever I
(a sorrow
still to know)

nights
wherein the daylight
streamed –
veins and lilac
spray
(to make of us
some other
sunny day)
laid beneath
the timbers
lush with muscadine
kisses
yet to trade
(another time)

homeagain

they warned me
of a poet’s son
of distances
undone
of paths beyond
the memory of paths
fields beneath
a starry night –
lay my body down
to trace
the ways –
becoming this
every world to one

where whispers
bloom a purple hush
and always
takes my breath
words I cannot speak –
a verse ignites
ancient skies
to others past
blossomed lets pretend
where stars
no longer burning
score the night

dreamy

questions
leave me breathless
e’en when the silence falls
when years are passed
unwillingly to night –
tis there
the petals
once reserved
are opened by a sigh

essence unrelenting
as a psalm

remember me
as melody –
verses into one
tracing notes
lilac
shades of stone

breathe to me
as answers come
by names another wore
let me sit
while silently
they dream

Author’s Note: There are nights when I pull awake with a start, returning from another place – not so far. In the darkness, tears pool as I search frantically for a place to write.

“Sometimes, in the midst of a crazy day or a crazier week, I get an email from my brother, ‘meet you below the falls in five minutes’. And just like that, I am somewhere else, breathing in the cold spray from high above, as laughter echoes off canyon walls. Even now, I close my eyes and hear the wonderful music that is bare feet on flat rocks.”

If we’re fortunate, we realize the blessing in the midst of its becoming rather than only in retrospect. In doing so, we free ourselves from bitterness, regret, and a future filled with frustration as we attempt to re-write the past.

In doing so, we erase the illusion that is time.

While the body may be tethered to the advance of hours, years, seasons, love is not. As someone near and dear to me commented recently, ‘How time dissolves in the mind, when our frame of reference is simply love …’

in pools
of understanding
our past
indifference weighs
denied the fleeting
burden
of goodbye
branches stretch
where touching
one another –
we begin
to taste the sea
in colors
of the sky

blush
where once
the summer fell
to make no sound at all
cedars crashed
beside their brothers
tall

wings –
a sweet inclusion
come fly away with me
beyond the hues
was there
we knew –
the breach of destinies

wrapped in whispered
secrets –
tied with cords of lace
where times before
the past is left
– surrendered now
to grace

love
where not a word
resounds
to tell of how it was
days beyond
our counting –
a silence filled
with us

morning streams
reminders still
of just how close
forever willed
in sheets of cotton
patchwork vine
as crimson burned
into our time
another was
(and e’er shall be)
written to
the passing days
unspoken
e’er as lips are cooled
but held as memory
(so it seems)
survivors of a promise rent
from faraway
so near the night
where once we slept
another dreams

sometimes
still I gather
moments by their stems
arranged in peaceful
place
against my heart
where essence
so familiar
blooms
to take my breath
reminding me
the way
was mine
to love

hold

I painted my walls
a deep shade of night
floors –
the essence of sun
I slipped through the shadows
and ran through the weeds
out past the places
I remembered
undone

every dream
unpretending
to be as before –
times I swore not to sleep
anymore
lest truth
find me drifting
in realms beyond this
moored to forever
– cursed by a kiss

another one day
tis my fate to recall
how my tears
just beginning –
were destined to fall
as rain
to the flowers
bloomed in my stead –
as rivers of somewhere
roll ‘neath
my bed

were a glimpse
of forever
a moment too much
a sigh
(ne’er the same)
as a touch
as a whisper of longing
loosed on the night
were wings
(us surrounding)
with prisms of light
each sacred reminder
of where we have been
and the ways
back to living –
we were gifted (again)
removed from the memory
as sparse was to know
if e’er we were loved
by another (let go)
every call to redemption
was a goodbye (erased)
by the flush of
forgiveness –
delivered as grace
