had I one more day
a lifetime more to love –
another first
with nothing lost
a place to start again
whispers of I love you
shadows pressed to light
a sigh to span
eternity
as once anew
begin

was not for life
I waited –
or a memory restored
but for love
I might have dreamed
a moment more
is death
an indecision
or just the end of all I know –
how sweet
the resurrection
of fire into the soul
dare we wait
another lifetime
another birth –
still undefined
lest I wake
and not remember
where I was
when you were mine

whatever was
so misconstrued
how was I to ever
hang my heart on magic –
endear my trust to lies
whatever loss
might I confess
to moments
so enduring –
as those who came
who left without goodbye
should history
remember me
to something less
romantic –
a purple bruise
beneath a jaded sky
scripted as
a sleepless night –
burdened by my longing
with memories
of memory –
and ne’er a tear
to cry

had morning woke
before I did –
stumbled from his lair
maybe he’d make coffee
in my stead
lounge about the kitchen
watching from the still
where daylight poured a runway
down the hall
maybe he’d fix breakfast
and serve it to me warm
with stories of a life
beyond my bed
at ease within the silence
of moments left to share
quiet as a shadow –
as verses
on the wall

softest auburn flame
burns hotest mid-july
and fans an ember still
from days of yore
when fiddle met
with banjo
banged a basement floor
as two by two
their feeble hearts
were worn
beneath a shaft
of fading light
vanilla burnt to butter
said I love you more
than once a night
lips to hover just above
the meet of wing to wonder
arms to reach
as buttons came
undone
eyes lit up
with wondering
where the dance might take
and would the lantern last
the coming dawn
pardon me the moving in
dirty floors forgiven
a bell hangs silver leaf
above the frame
tempted claim
of candlelight
violin and whispers
memories of turning round –
two by two
by one

Would ever I be lifted
from this place of frail abode ~
and sail beyond
the whitest clouds
to play
in daffodils
(my only will)
shall be to know again
the thought that was ~
that brought the rain to me
