take my rings
and buy a sunset
souvenirs of yesterday
sell the bed –
to give me heaven
flannel ships to sail away

brighter stars
beyond the ceiling
told me once
their every name –
take the silks
but the spare the story
softer now – the dying flame

promise sweet
as monday morning
turn the mattress –
write it down
where we’ll be
when next remembered –
love we made
of moments now

trade my locks
for winter roosters –
sell the skates
from down the hall
leave the door
a bit more open
lest I miss you after all

of consequence
and one time leaving
there the empty shelves
are bared
sunlight stills
the morning after –
kept in pieces everywhere

thought you knew
I’d wait another
lifetimes more without the proof
two steps backward
into shadows –
spare the love
but take the truth
…

of daisies ~

there are things I can’t say
to anyone yet
some admission of dying
one piece at a time ~
one crush of a breath
one season of death
and I can’t seem to call it
by name

the thief
and the bride
the willing young man
who stood in the drive
with arms open wide ~
reminders of daisies
white velvet sprays
and a spark to the eyes
said I’m doing okay

but I can’t seem to think
what I don’t want
to say ~
and there can’t be a place
for goodbyes here today

they’ll drive me to drink
and the river will flow
out beyond where I’m bound
to be going ~
I go

read me ~

share with me
the warmth that is your
days upon this earth ~
shade my path
and guide my feet to home

lay with me
when nights are chilled
and wake me with your stirring
forsaken not by love
I waited on

tell of me
some other tale ~
and tary with the turning
of pages to the weathered spine
bending unrehearsed

barter not the price
for days ~
far more to one
I cherished ~
sign my name
as practiced once
with yours

the faded face
of memory ~
the plea without the prying
folded more than chance
into the dark
pushed aside as wishes
would this weary heart
reveal ~

read me
til these ancient lights
are gone

know me
as was never known ~
tho sworn there was another
when paths were new
as cool the dusky day

feathers floated from the west ~
eastern this horizon
warmed your breath
as day broke ~

red against the clay

…

north ~

for every road
was laid between
and circles round me flowing ~
til up came down
and which way home ~
the sea

a rush of dreams
when put to bed ~
grieves us on the morning
forgotten by the places
we were loved

how can the ways
be new to me ~
familiar in their telling
of constellations traced
when I was young

was there beneath
the oldest
oak ~
hiding from the heavens
I dreamed of moss
and woke before the sun

the path to us
along the rise ~
is lined with silver iris
and keeps my place
as nothing else will do

ashes rain confusion
on the map that knew
our fate ~
fortune lies
beyond the light
we know

…

a place on your pillow ~

As softly
I am remembered
to you ~
as a kiss
once your words
claimed to me ~

Found you
in everything new
I am knowing
was less than the places
made free ~

Penned to my memory
buried your sin
and died (every time)
for the love
we begin

I shall leave heaven
a place
on your pillow
and sing while you sleep ~
of waking to dreams

…

not so far ~

in the space to hold
a story ~
the mystery of days
and for a precious few ~
the rhyme of nights
where tablets laid
of whitest pearl
are reflecting now our sun ~
stones to walk
across the bliss of life

in the dream
we had forgotten ~
where living lies awake
for another day ~
another slumber come
denied the rush to losing
let us sit awhile
with love ~
and worry not what others
might have said

in the silence
where the song is felt
pressed against our music ~
a timid drum
eternally shall keep
in quiet let us listen
to the echo (is our soul)
the welcome home
as always known
(is knowing us again)

in the sigh
released by evermore ~
a name we dare not
mention ~
confession of the best
of all we are
to that which is
(without a place)
would fill us up with longing ~
and find us (when)
the world is fast
asleep

in the one
that is ~
our in between
of breathing and out ~
the truth we wear
needs never proof to be
the light is still
a door unlocked ~
prayers awaiting answer

~ forever
not so far away
we are

sometimes ~

lost to the passing
of dark into day ~
as starlight
of dew
bittersweet

breathed
a beginning
how easily done ~
as chill to
the sweat of defeat

a number
a name ~
ascribed to the winds
an essence remaining
somewhere

tender assault
on my favorite time ~
quietly
finding you there

stitched to the back
of lids ~
where I’ve kept
places and times
we will meet

music sometimes
when the words
fall apart
forgiven the path
of retreat

lifelines
are stretched
from one to the next ~
a glimmer of someone
I knew

where are you now
I wonder all morning ~
as twilight
lays wet on the dew

more ~

give me to more
than the flush of existence
a song held in place
by the sound of my voice
give me to more than stones
without mercy –
or plans for reliving
a once random choice

much more than words
or promise repeated
back and forth rhyme –
as a measure
of grace
burden and bruises
blisters and babies –
are more now than passing
of time into space

a name seldom spoken
as a thought
might have been –
and sworn to the memory
of love beyond life
a garden
of orchids
jasmine and curses –
as laughter to ring
in the dead still
of night

remembered
forgotten
made more by the journey
and moments no less –
for the ones without say –
where I’ll be missed
as my presence to linger
on paths still becoming
somewhere else –
a new day

much more than a spot
on an outdated map –
or a place without season
another to hold
more than a pocket
for keeping my compass –
or hands
once were holding
found their way
to my soul

practiced ~

were there ever words
I’d surely find
when looking round this place –
and times when nothing
else would fit
my lines

troubadour and tailor
source of gentle need –
marked the place
where pen was met
with might

and practiced I
ten thousand times
with voice
and tears
as laughter
just what to say
if e’er I could again

know that you were
listening
or that with kindness found –
rhyme denied a reason
to become

the way to you
already now –
the path is worn by wanting
briars grown to snare
the place behind

I’ve wondered tho
how many lives –
before the vine would conquer
while close enough
I could touch
you still

tis not the way
of longing –
resolved to circumstance
I’d raise a cup
of cure –
and cut my curls

spend the night
retrieving –
as syllables to slant
linen lined
and not a one so blue

weighted in the simple
thought –
that something must be lacking
for letters run together
off the page

empty now the coffer
was saving me for more
another line –
as first you wrote
of me

this way ~

meet me
where the sunrise
burns dreams
into the waking –
yellow as the roses
yesterday

were begged forgiveness
fell apart –
as petals on the counter
before the words were gone
and truth betrayed

meet me
where the waters roll
backwards to the glaciers
as cold to polish black
the river rocks

dream
and tell me
where I was
before you found me waiting
still within the first to rise
breath undone
by light

save for me
the final dance
though I am not a dancer
practiced more to verse
than e’er to sway
of arms around me
reaching
to keep my heart aloft –
hands to hold
as wishes tucked away

a picture postcard
kept in place
by something more becoming
for years I will remember you
this way
constellations shining
in the light behind your eyes

evermore resounding
in words we couldn’t say
