were this the meeting
of time interlaced –
and stayed I a moment too long
looking back
as a breath to the breeze
no different than raven or wren

sunlight or sorrows
passed through as shadow
were given a reason – come home
needles for nesting
a faraway blessing
no different than now
my purpose to know

stronger the promise was made
of uncertain –
and there stands forever
a place unadorned
by need – might wisdom
give life to a dream –
will I want for another (more time)

to caress
or burn to my soul
the hands of the sun
remembered a sigh
some sweet lullaby –
plays softly when whispers
have come

and struggle is all I have kept
from my slumber –
forgotten the pathway to dawn
shrouded in mystery
questions unanswered –
the mirror knows more than she tells

laced with the past
is every tomorrow –
dusted the raven
with wren in her sails

wings above the trees ~

more times than not
I waited
til all the lights were out
and the only sound
was wings
above the trees

for countless nights
I stood alone
just beyond your gate
touching stars
and waiting for the moon

to fall
against my longing
split my lowly soul again
*hush*
my lone confession
to the still

the only chatter
noticed there
was the tremor of my heart
a drum to surely wake
the poet’s dream

lights within
my wanting skin
warmth without regret
dress to drag the briars
miles to home

autumn lures
the afternoon to chill
frost is soon
becoming

already I’m left
standing
in the dark

who am I
this choice to be
and ageless as a fable
fastened to another page
pretending then to know
the time was sure
but never less
than sheets of corded linen
and where would I be led
but shangri-la

would e’er they read
this testament
and wonder what I knew
to where I’ve gone
when all is secret here
as roads are traced
from east to west ~
buzz from south to home
tho still there will be those
who understand

to wait another moment
will watch the sky for signs
and trust the waves
to sail the northern lights
I wonder will they notice
a subtle change in breeze ~
when the moon is almost gone
and cedar sings

whispers ~

start me now
another time ~
beyond the edge of waiting
as wisdom wills to reason
beyond the winter’s say

life within
this present tense
of all and still becoming
no other could confess of such
or know of time this way

of hands to fit with other hands
lines impressed to lines
and faultless now the lull
to pull us home ~
the change of light
to more than sun
against the startled morning
essence found in moments
‘fore the dew

such silence prone
to miracles
might change these mortal vines ~
and gather us
as lilies to the vase

care for me
don’t spare for me
a place within your garden
and pray my seed be scattered
to the winds

move aside these shadows
of dawn’s caress returning ~
standing down the trees
beyond the gate
circles drawn in echo
to the waters near the willows
returning all for love
we held within

silken touch of something more
than passing on the pathway ~
knowing of another time
we dare not speak of here
and yet without the words
were we inclined

to tell it all
so eagerly the stories
I’ve been holding ~
bittersweet their presence
on my tongue

perfumes thru the window
float ~
whispers of remember
as names denied a place
beyond the stone

but for the soul
within the soul
of rivers ~ living timbers
mountains mourn a moment
so divine

verses stitched together
by one heart another day ~
knit a shell of blossoms
undisturbed
ribbons to an autumn sky
write in words we know

held apart
the lowly bloom ~
refused to fade away

please ~

as sunlight fills
the places ~
just beyond my summer dream
and stills my heart with
wishes for the rain

the steamy breath
of morning fire ~
stumbled from the shadows
and crossed a broken fence
into my way

gold embraced by crimson
weeds and red perfume ~
lacey lace of spinners
weaved for miles
the pass between

breaks my thought
with more than once ~
and where I’ll be tomorrow
spilled against a slant
of crooked board

warmed within a glass
of sugar tea and sweet magnolia
burned the window brown
with summer please

learned again ~

of that we knew
we’ve learned again
as difference made whole
passing as a thought
we strained to hear

as breath
against the branches
whispers test the breeze –
ashes float a torch
above the way

magic pools
reflection
of a long ago sunrise
testament of dreamer ~
to a king

honeybee and hornet
stretch to raise their canopy
of majesty made over
for the one who came to know
the world as one
surrendered to his sighs ~

innocence decided
by watchers on the wing
rakes the night
in search of words unsaid

answers written over
in the rush
to keep it all
another waits in silence ~
to question why we came

across forever ~

hiding
in the wonder
longing comes reluctant
to the dawn –
and where we were
it seems the sun has faded
but still I can recall
each tenderness –
miracle of memory
when stretched a tighter cord
has reached across forever

I am here
with presence knit
safe beneath my skin
to know before this knowing
how twilight filled your eyes
and I was rocked to sleep
no different then
made sweeter for the moments
passed between

for this return –
as waiting took so long
tis not the same for me
without you near
tho in this breath – I keep you
ten thousand other names
yet none I wear

and here again
am I
to confess my last sunrise
warmth endures – another place
where shadows gather still
to speak aloud –
of love before we knew

rivers dry beneath
the noonday sun –
twilight brings remembrance
of your eyes

songs were meant for you ~

as I have been
I am no less –
repeating truths aloud
something secret
captured by the wind

the same as stories –
chapters fell
as red and yellow turning
maple keeps them best
but willow wants

witness as was I
to songs were meant for you
when last I was
before we came to be

remembered
every holding on
before this hour forgiven
light reflecting
comfort through the trees

and you were there
for in that place
I found another reason
it mattered not
these mysteries to tend

was all the time
with want for none
but to find you (as you found me)

talking down the leaves –
secrets to the wind

crushed ~

it matters not
to those who wait
how long the truth
in coming –
would words bring recognition
of touch already known

visions past
are come again
as moments passed unnoticed
turned away
from yesterday –
seekers turned to stone
a sprig of purple blossom
was crushed beneath the linen
tied with satin ribbon
(the only one I own)

still takes of breath
and moves a tear (to falling)
just the same
though nothing keeps
a memory of names –
a place where we were going
another starting from to choose
did you see me
walking somewhere
near the shore

I don’t know how
or why the sand was wanting
for the waves –
a breeze to blow
I close my eyes (again)
would listening betray my trust
of other times (I wonder)
though worlds apart –
the tide still pulls me home

tiny (broken) seashells
pass my story to the sea
and roll away
before the others know
where I was
and where you were
when parted by the breakers
peculiar our surrender
to the moon

when painted black
midnight fell – reflection
on the waters
a letter once you wrote
has found its way to me

twelve steps ~

It seems a month
has passed since Sunday
~ last I checked the trees were bare.
The orchard grieves the scent
of apples ~
and grace is showing
everywhere.

The fence is down
~ though not to notice
how I missed the letting go.
With heart so focused on forever ~
never took of time
to know.

Nor planned to be
this far from leaving
~ this near to hearts already closed.
Twelve from gone
and two from dying ~
in the same sweet bed
where I was born.

Eighteen dreams
and sixteen babies
~ lost my faith in men this time.
Begged an end tho nothing mattered
more than this ~
my truth to find.

From here to go
as where life leads me
~ takes me back
the way I came
to unremember every mercy ~
kisses taste for years
the same.

As gravel roads
in twilight glisten
~ empty rooms
(to candle flare).
Paced the porch
from birth to breaking ~
awaiting dawn
to find you
there.
