crossed

had I known you here
some other day –
for lives so
different now
for the tangled up
and pulled apart –
of graces we allowed

had I known of love
would choose the same
to cross
into your night
as a verse
recited silent
wing’ed to your light

had I known the way
would bring us home –
as dreams
this time foretold
would love you still
for sorrows felt –
one heart
one hand to hold

had I known you
as I know you
with time and space
to be
forever
we are loving this

– an unknown
destiny

into

as dark
the ways to wander
and worried there alone
of where the gods were leading
(let them lead)
casting deep
our tattered nets
into this sweet divide
made between this world
and those beyond

fragile
as the ancient loop
barely seen at all –
tho stretched to hold
of all together now
as one to understanding
let now the strings be loosed –
as each was sworn
another time
to be

withering

down from the city
what a pleasant surprise
to find you at home
on my porch –
drinking the last cup of coffee
I wonder
what comforts you now
the same as before

wishing you back
and chewing on pride –
leaning to moments
forgotten to miss
I’ll do your laundry
and know of your eggs –
how you like them
I don’t
but I keep them
for this

soap
the color
of new england roses –
sweaters and denim
have softened with age
habits have
taken me
longer for letting
go of the pieces –
a half written page

sealed to a life
I can barely remember
was a time
before –
I was me
spinning in circles
drunken illusion
of where – and of when
we were going
to be

pardon the mess
had I known you were coming –
might have baked you
a cake –

or burned the house down

queen anne

reason grows in patches
nested disarray
when bent to light
becomes misunderstood

for nights
denied the waking
a lover’s hands
to dream –
midnight folded round us
in the dark

of summers
were there e’er enough
to make up for the chill
breezes unrelenting
still they ache

. . .

near

wet leaves
scattered –
friend to foe
lunas into sorrows
flaming as the scarlet
black –
nature’s cabaret
silken souls
defend their woes
martyrs of the moon
whisper of the lying nights
nestled us between

cold beneath
the dapple light
spun amid the shadows
was come of love
when spring remembered fall
roses crushed to memory
– scents I used to wear
pressed into my hem –
a garden gate

cocked the head
of ravens –
ancient mercies
home to roost
with pieces wound
of juniper and jade –
silver voices rise
into the chilly mountain air
opal eyes reflecting
us as truth

. . .

this time ~

here

were curses
to brush
my feelings away
as splinters
pushed deep in my soul
worn as a callus
of promise to numb –
 were moments of heaven
I know

forty years more
than my mama was young
chosen for choosing
this time
broken down places
wink in the sun
a shimmering ghost
 left behind

longing we planted
in clover and moss –
weighted to pockets
of stone
forgotten our fate
as candles died out
– habits held close
 not for long

. . .

another ~

unto

if I were born
another place –
and never heard your name
or memorized the music
of your voice
would the night arrive
unnoticed
as wings above the pines
would I leave my prayers
for coming back
behind

if I were loved
some other way –
and stayed my will to know
of lessons almost ended
by my days
would lips be sealed
and not for one –
remembered as a kiss
buried with the memory
of refrain

if I were here
some other day –
familiar comprehension
as words to scatter
ashes to the wind
the failsafe of forever
eternity begins
within a dream
another fragile death

folded to a locket
buried with my sins –
reminders fall
around me
in the dark
verses haunt the pages
wherein another waits
held against a name

I dare not say

. . .

choices

poppies grew
one august –
flush against the barn
and someone said
they saw a man
asleep out on the lawn

were whispers
from the kitchen –
tho no one held the proof
of where the stories
started –
while searching
for the truth

a busted fence
and thirty head
of cattle –
more or less
babies crying
 somewhere now –
 for longing unconfessed

separate beds
and darkened rooms
places kept apart –
ten thousand miles
and eighteen steps
worn between their hearts

how many sorrows
offered
as ransom for a kiss
touch reserved for evermore
was never meant
for this

a slight of girl
to question –
how to know
when love was real –
would wonder
just how long the wait
for broken hearts
to heal

…

something unsaid ~

breathe
and for a moment
eternities still
the first
the last
forever I am held
within something unsaid –
somewhere garnered a kiss long ago
falling as voice
into praise

fleeting
reminders
of places behind
will became stars
on the way
familiar longing
as hands fit to hands –
beat to beat
to heart
living done over
forgotten the sin
lips move
with nothing to say

dream
as permission
to harness the mind
curs’ed sleep
takes us home
cedar boats
to carry –
evenings rush the tide
finds a morning
waiting
to atone

. . .

halls of light ~

fragile

spirit lift
as flight betrayed
cool this brow of longing –
raise the window
let the wonder in

of words
my only console
was to find it written
here –
a cause for strength
in memories of light

angels
gather after dark –
to rest above the rafters
silence sings
the sweetest song
I know

lovers wait
eternities
for one more living come –
passed between
our reasons to conceive

blessings
one –
the rest shall let
another breath surrendered
as standing close beneath –
the waters rise

rushing waves
of falling leaves –
wing’eds on the chimney
– sounds to me
the same
within these halls
of light
