you stayed away
much longer than you meant
but I was waiting
near the window
(you could see me from the road)
and everything was still
the same
though years have bent us both
but something there
is just as it had been (before)
tho moments keep no pictures
of the past
I’d thought a time or two
of where you might have gone
did you make it to that diner
stayed up all night long
(to dance)
what engine held you closer
than I ever thought
I could
did you long for me
(forgiveness)
beneath a desert moon
I remember hearing
somewhere
you had lost your faith
and for nights
I prayed and worried of the road before
whene’er a storm would come
I’d speak your name (aloud)
and stare out at the darkness
everywhere
(and wondering)
it’s been a while
the place don’t look the same
(as then)
the orchard fell a year or so ago
the old porch swing
still sways (beneath the weight of memory)
there’s some things I don’t say
(I wish I could)
come inside
I’ll get some coffee brewing
what pride I may have had
was lost in yesterday
there are latches need replacing
and fields now gone (to seed)
I moved the bed
much closer to the window
I can lie awake
and count the stars
(you gave)
nothing’s changed
tho time has passed
(winters without asking)
no need to say
I’ve never locked the door
some might call me crazy
but most are gone from here
most all my life
I’ve waited for this day
you stayed away
much longer than you meant

there’s a strangeness
to becoming –
from imprints of the past
a truth made strong
(by little lies)
as destinies recast
in azure blue
reflection
before the moon was lost
shadows split the night
(with memory) –
as stars uncrossed
by the weight
of desperation
were longing (eternal)
come to rest –
hopes are rearranged (by one desire)
and held by less
a fleeting proposition
unremembered by design –
dreams returning
(carried by the soul)
are of one
divine

longing sleeps
in soft percale –
with tiny yellow flowers
a shade of thin
are threads already known
as paths
beyond this lowly state –
counted more by grace
life come round
to living us again
as sewn beneath a ruffle
of gentle disregard
for times
we let –
and times we couldn’t go
held before the daylight
wrapped in yesterdays
– quilted patch
of love me more
goodbyes
screen door
opened wide enough
to let all reason fly
the universe we
gathered –
in sheets
of soft percale

how fragile
our returning –
for time to cease to be
where sorrows
wash an ocean to the sea
patterns of remembrance –
where moments fell
between
love was ever meant
to be
this way
as shells
along an ancient path
some distance from the shore
broken as the sailor
wandered home
tiny bones –
as silver fins
are written to each leaf
stories of a journey
never known

of a moment
I’m uncertain –
where choices came undone
days dissolved to years
so close –
this far
of somewhere else
forgotten by –
the distance worn between
will – no more forsaken
than the memory
of ways –
and houses where
the chimney fell
twice that awful winter
windows broken
boarded
by the want to gather in
and huddled we
together
in the space
where secrets fell
trading lies
for mysteries
stories fitting still
to loving curves
shadows pulled away
by evermore
– murmurs
of redemption
echoes burning bright
warmth –
a fragile trading
of all we came
to love

as far
from my memory –
a you I don’t know
is willed into life
by the lure of a flame
wrapped in illusion
of a touch long ago –
moments
no longer the same
as a partial
remembrance –
of lives passed away
love we were hoping to keep
one more day –
folded as pages
to yesterday’s dream
margins
surely to fade
saving for none
the promise of more
than a once
curs’ed vapor –
left burning before
in the recess of always
where names
have been lost –
a time
before taking
of breath
we forgot

as oceans
so as I –
assail on summer leaf
hindered not to journey
by the breeze
balanced top a tidal wave
soft vanilla soul –
pressed to flight
wherever
I am bound
as tenderness
prevailed –
to charm the ancient elm
mesmerized by falling
let me fall
eager as the morning wren
lacking not the urge
as comfort come
in yearning
for the sky
dreaming now
remembered
as a place
my longing knows –
petals flutter down
in sweet parade
floating unencumbered
as essence
into light –
gathered now desire
to reach the sea

would birth
be absolved
by the passing between
or dying held fault
for the slipping away
moments becoming –
as stars to the dark
where hearts
held in secret
are gathered to grace
lingered in loving –
with purpose of life
as ashes to twilight
forgotten to fall
thru ribbons of scarlet
purple and maize
– and held as a passion
forgiving of all
a breathless confession
of moments too few
when promised forever
with all we hold dear
weaved to the soul
by pieces of light –
and waited as every goodbye
disappeared
awash in a river
unnoticed by time –
and swept by a memory
of night into day
no matter the measure
to lives lived between
or how far the first time
I held you
this way
