as the morning
of vespers ~
a walk toward the lake
as a route neath the bridge
on your way

do you think of me
then ~
as your soul comes awake
and light spills
from heaven again

in the solace
of silence
the viligent verse ~
weaves into words
a reason to slow

misty blue skies
and I wandered this way
as near as the sunlight
to love

remembered of time
a dream such as this
of nights cursed by coffee
and miles

moved to a moment
of one standing still
do you hear ~
can you know
how I feel

before the wind
had memory –
a mountain rose between
before the set –
we burned
beneath our skin

as messengers
of love’s refrain –
verses without answer
when promised time –
a sweeter thought
became

before the now
was come to this
we swore an oath to follow
stars into
a sacred night
revealed again our place

beyond our sleep
forever dreams
as witness to a moment –
when turned into the light
for which we came

too late
for words
to bind our soul –
sealed within the passing
of life into eternity
silently we go

a place on your pillow ~

As softly
I am remembered
to you ~
as a kiss
once your words
claimed to me ~

Found you
in everything new
I am knowing
was less than the places
made free ~

Penned to my memory
buried your sin
and died (every time)
for the love
we begin

I shall leave heaven
a place
on your pillow
and sing while you sleep ~
of waking to dreams

…

forgotten of eden ~

were I a sign
of eternities passing –
planets laid up
on the edge of the yard
quiet so loud
the birds were made silent
as ten thousand songs
and not a one heard

were I the first
of messengers coming
spouting the truth
of yesterday’s news –
lost in the rush
of seekers to follow
and calmed by the promise
of nothing to lose

here lies the lesson
forgotten of eden
as grace undeserved
now fallen away –
warned of the wisdom
all would come after –
of stories rewritten
to lead them
astray

miracles hide
in everyday places
where living we pass
on our way (unaware)
of destinies lost
to the searching of shadows
– unnoticed
the presence of light
glowing there

were I the one
of all to have wandered
out past the place
where secrets are kept
laden with signs
of another beginning –
as eden awoke
in the moments
we slept

know of me ~

come the wave
before the tide –
with memories of the shore
and light when danced
atop the foam –
remembers us no more

past the song
of silence raised –
some fragile dream recalled
when choice to be
so willingly –
would gladly risk it all

stay the night
another day –
shall wake upon the morn
and places
we have parted from
await a time reborn

hold these words
as written – in the warmth
that is your hand
and others –
as the taste of life
once washed upon these sands

know of me
when everything
you thought was real
is changed –
when the winds around you
whisper of the reasons
why we came

dark the wave
adores the moon
as breath beneath the tide
– as rivers flow
the ways to home –
on memories
of the light

winters unforgiving ~

came I here before daylight
alone with this sunrise
to watch the world
made new again –
and brushed across
the sky

more than once
was here I stayed
and woke
beyond the light
to places I had dreamed of
remembered to the night

I wondered
long to chances passed
and turns of wistful fate
of beauty
still becoming –
and I a moment late

tho not the first
I thought to times
my faith was sorely bent
to paths I might have taken home
and roads of good intent

how many dawns
spent looking back
without power to change a thing
to winters unforgiving
awaiting proof
of spring

settled in ~

for every time
I wandered here –
to make myself anew
when settled in
with not a care at all
turned to places felt the same –
so sure I’d find my other
balanced as an august
wing to rise

kept the pace
I’d meant to lose –
and walked the wrong side over
passed beneath a bough
of winter shade
remembering another time
we traveled this beginning
and crossed into a place
we couldn’t stay

promise held
as bittersweet
beneath the stubborn tongue
now and then as poison to resign
were other times
regarded truth
far more than understanding –
else lovers sit unnoticed
by the song

worry not for evidence
of ages I have lost –
tho suffered more
than e’er my verse could pay
as births entwined
tho for a while –
were hastened by surrender
to heal of aching hearts
beneath the pain

if e’er again
my journey pass –
as solace to the dreamer
or poems rest
with hands I used to know
give to prayer these passages –
of everafter coming
a long way back
to finding me –
along familiar roads

unremembering ~

I wish I had held
to moments more dearly ~
to songs that were played
on the breath of a sigh.
I wish I had watched
as wonder unraveled
and slept when it ended ~
a thought passing by.

I wish I had prayed
and waited my blessings ~
as sure in their coming
my delight when they came.
I wish I had dreamt
long past your leaving ~
and woke to a morning
where love still remained.

I wish I had spoke
when the words
were still tender ~
their silence remembered
to places I go.
I wish I had listened ~
did you speak of forever
in rhyme before reason ~
and wanting to know.

I wish I had gone
when the going was easy ~
the lessons to linger
not much to confess.
A road that was fated ~
the way back
forgotten.
My chance for redemption
not bartered for less.

I wish I had known
the real of what mattered ~
were moments pretending
or just passing through.
I wish I had held
a little while longer ~
e’er time steal the memory
of wishing for you.

get me back ~

lifetimes more
somewhere I know
I left you broken (left you blue)
fortune raised to falling light –
into these arms
of wishes true

wore your tears
against my heart
eighty years and not a one –
you weren’t a part
of me (becoming)
– jealous moon
of curs’ed sun

found a note
you left behind –
and pinned your voice
inside my sleeve
for every time
I heard your name
my breath was stopped
for love (to grieve)

was ever I
to feel this way –
or given grace
again somewhere
(take me back) into this life –
another day
to find you there

dare you break
of ties so frail –
as final payment lingers due
wilted roses
broken fence
and miles between
(I never knew)

where you’d be
this time around –
Kentucky roads
split north and south
the same old stars –
(the same sweet view)
and all the rest
forgotten now

once enough
forever still –
words are folded
(you can’t see)
pages rub (my memory raw)
as night returns
your love
to me

noonday ~

save us
from the bitterness
comes as winter snow
pressed against the windowpanes
when nights are long
and cold

when holding back
means holding on
they warned us not to chance
would never be the same again
these lives of circumstance

the tell-tale sign
of autumn leaves
september claims the skies
a half an ounce of lonely
will drown you every time

when taking back
that goodbye kiss
there never should have been
distance passed
without a word
this silence to defend

silver threads
and thirteen moons
a key without a mate
held as truth a little while
these souvenirs of fate

you faced
the noonday sun
with wonder why you came
I was laughing
as the clouds rolled in –
and praying it would rain

when a moment stilled
eternity –
with memory of the fall
you were watching me
as I reached for you –
when nothing moved
at all

no mistaking of the promise
though left to wonder
when would be –
a goodbye kiss
for taking back
a date with destiny
