sorting

of houses now fallen
their wares to define –
numbered my streets
not to know

yet still
they were restless
when nights held me cold
to tempt me with wishing
on stars long ago

of lovers
no longer
and ways sure to part
remembering those
never were

yet mornings
sometimes

I think on us there
and a dog in the yard
rarely barks

tho was ours
as the curtains
we pulled to the side
yellow and shades of purple
you loved

as I left
once you stood
there alone
in the shadows
weeping for chances
cursing the weeds
were grown o’er the numbers
a house falling down

reverses

slip the ring
from round my heart
curs’ed day for trading
so fragile now
our leaving to begin

take of mine
the cedar chest
fourteen sets of wishes
carried from the attic
to the curb

dare me not
to suffer long
with silver bells and rattles
sheets
to match the curtains
I don’t care

set me sail
with dignity –
starch the winter white
and paper now
along our only hall

destiny awaits
the sun
where once Kentucky yearned
for linens kept
in cardboard –
promise in the barn

harvest

the seasons
unrelenting –
as chasing one another
winter blew
as ashes on July
last we spoke –
November
was a time I’ve come
to love –
holding still
the magic of our spring

waiting there
within the chill
of autumn to the harvest –
more than e’er
we knew to understand
bitter wheat
was turned again
to seed the fields of summer –
dreams we dreamed
awake us different
now

across
and thru
these sleepless nights
blankets drag
the ground –
revealed another truth
for why we came
wanting but for nothing
would see the past
undone –

the snow would melt
to flowers all
around

withering

down from the city
what a pleasant surprise
to find you at home
on my porch –
drinking the last cup of coffee
I wonder
what comforts you now
the same as before

wishing you back
and chewing on pride –
leaning to moments
forgotten to miss
I’ll do your laundry
and know of your eggs –
how you like them
I don’t
but I keep them
for this

soap
the color
of new england roses –
sweaters and denim
have softened with age
habits have
taken me
longer for letting
go of the pieces –
a half written page

sealed to a life
I can barely remember
was a time
before –
I was me
spinning in circles
drunken illusion
of where – and of when
we were going
to be

pardon the mess
had I known you were coming –
might have baked you
a cake –

or burned the house down

 whiskey dreams

whiskey magnolias
and red rivers rising
carry me home
by way
of the south
eastward and skyward
take me Kentucky
where sunsets are gathered
to ferry me now

blackberry bruises
and two kinds of loving
made for me
saved for me
all I have known
fruit trees have taken
the worst of the winters
and words cling to pages
of story outgrown

passionate placement
of names before curses
sweet tea
and all day to dream –
light from the window
spills now the morning –
as love fills the places
we passed
in between

keep to your slumber
and I will be there –
tangled to threads
where reason fell through
dogwood and darling
nobody knows –
of roads I’m becoming
(winding my) way
back to you

sweet

folded starch of linen
to hide a jagged state –
tho tattered lace
and denim
more my style

senseless
my pretention
the effort made to be
whate’er it was –
the slip
to make you fall

words remain –
reminders
of another me (just fine)
essence born
of burning leaves
chamomile
and rhyme

captive

stay the winter
share my bed –
to linger past the memory
of snowy blankets
melting all around
tempt me not
the taking leave –
stay to greet the spring
choose me
but for longing
unconfessed

stay the time
of silent speaking
dusted smiles
and rhyme –
hours without thought
to say a thing
solitaire and I don’t care
where tomorrow goes
an abandoned well
will stories tell
the same

stay the right
for wronging –
let the candles burn
lean into the marrow
of surprise
smoke rings
rise familiar
as storm clouds from the east
lightning strikes
reflection to your eyes

stay the want
for wilderness –
the forest of my fears
has pushed beyond
the borders of my breath
stay the will
for one more day
pull the blankets ‘round
listen as december
melts away

. . .

written to

raptured
by the journey
resistance of before –
icy plains and parched
exteriors

weathered lines
wore me down –
bleach and blind
the same
more for every snowy
white december

breathless
consequences –
of justice we have naught
will leave them there
forgotten
by our kind

sometimes I’m
reminded of ashes
blown my way –
and destinies
now weaved into
my soul

remember

of dying
I have but a faint
recollection
gathered in pieces
of living before
sometimes a flood
of almost not memories
of people and places
I’ve known
yet I don’t

exactly the moment
but there in my keeping
a moment unsettled
was yet to be dreamed
how is it I’ve passed
into newness
becoming
and kept of the leaving
some worries undone

a flaw in the story
was stumbled in finding
mornings of lifetimes
within the same sun
nights
as the moon
lay on my shoulder
stars – an illusion
I named every one

slowly but surely
threads to unravel –
knotted so many
the charms working free

from all
that we wondered
unchanged by the dying
are faraway traces
still living in me

pieces of eternity ~

awhile

was a while
before the setting
remembered by the moon
as flame the night ablaze
within the chill –
chatter of a crooked porch
swayed beneath the tin
where pieces of eternity –
were moments
standing still

bury me
I heard them say
I wonder did they know
the time would soon be coming
to obey
promise never meant to keep
passions here for long
sealed within the fluttering
of words we couldn’t say

names the same
as numbers
dates not far between
the starting out for places
never known
letters meant for someone else
are chiseled to the bark
fields of autumn dancers –
wave me home

silence I’ve committed
every thought to memory –
delight me now
the blossom of the soul
brush of ancient laurels
weaved into a crown
bury me –
the coming back
I won’t have far to go
