for a while
before I knew you well
were ways I walked alone
lonely nights
curved against the clay
lullabies
to only self
of sometimes stories knew
of places I was going
everywhere and
faraway
beyond
the reach
of one more rise –
one more bitter chill
a sacrifice remembered
in my bones
an aged need
to fill my gut
crooked boards and wine
a place beyond
these places
I am known
where once I stood
on tender soles
and watched the dream released
above the lake
in whispers soft and clear
a breath
I scarce remember how
a moment all the same –
turning back the night
to find you
here
. . .

would that I
could love you more
than poets e’er could pen
or dreamers curse
the seasons
come between
arms to overflowing
lips of morning blush
of all I’ve known
no other near the same
awakened
by my sweet caress
breath of winter snow
ashes fall –
to hide the path
again
reason sleeps
where longing
put the bed up long ago
crushed beneath
a silent
let me in
lest touch betray
this faultless fate –
of memories made true
sanctity
denied a sacred vow
a moment cleft
from all the rest
these thoughts
of turning home
another day
ten thousand years
from now
. . .

half past
the time
I thought you were leaving
I saw you
out there
on the night
spinning a fable
from yesterday wishes
held to a shadow
cursed by the light
wraps me in worry
for how
will I find you
watching from somewhere
beyond
east of orion
back o’er my shoulder
– just when
I thought
you had gone
. . .

in the swell of a moment
eternity waits
denied the protection
of one last embrace
or lives to make more
of what steals us away
a kiss
then another
surrender
as were words
unafraid
the echo of sighs –
filling a silence
so tender
a cold morning after
where longing is saved
by warmth
through the branches
remember
. . .

there’s a name
at the heart
of every remember
a silence
worn clean
to the bone
the truth
is my story
the ways
of my passing
a path through the wood
where evergreen grows
an abundance
of living
for love to aspire
gathered in bunches
and left by the gate
tied with a ribbon
forgotten by summer
was the first day
all over
again
. . .

whispers
and lies
feel the same
in the dark
weeping for somebody’s baby
promises spared
the condition of truth
ache is made home
where heart
used to be
a quiet resolved
to sleep ‘neath the bed
with secrets
the same
as dared we repeat
a tortured relearning
the language of love
poetry warmed
by the tongue
snowflake
and feather
briar and lace
scripture
and where have you been
wrapped in a story
tell me anew
of a blush
bleeding soft
thru the pines
. . .

daybreak wears
a yellow dress
longer than july
and wonders to the boys
with woolen hands
summers gone
and one more ring
was promise to endure
the golden age
the turning page
resigned
by one
was I another
slept beyond my prime
cursing at a dream
for letting go
held in place by whispers
dare I make the bed
and worry then
for where my pen
was laid
fingers trace
the only proof
someone locked the door
a name for places
I can scarce recall
a life before the living
let of me to leave
photographs
and what of then
remains to be
again
swept beyond
the reaches
of a faraway resolve
some other dream
remembers me
to home
