remembered now
this lowly becoming
of pulling apart
to find you again
how I wish
I could help you to see
to the places –
some other we crossed
in our dreaming

was there
that I found you
a-sleeping
wrapped in the moments
were made of forever
truth given purpose
much more
than this breath

destiny comes
in forms unexpected
faith has no season
to worry
for death

love is as always –
for the end
never ending
strains not to barter
this touch to defend

worlds that would fit
in the hand of another
time –
but a picture
of a place we begin

heavens crossed ~

scattered lines
and easy does it –
someone takes the worst
of blame
forgotten all that was
of dreaming –
a frightened boy
without a name

soldier
brother
heroes all
someone’s baby
rocks the cradle ~
mountains crash
beneath the fall

lives are tangled –
heavens crossed
tho someone’s heart is hurting still
another waits the long night
(longer)
as empty arms
denied their fill

come the prayer
before the kneeling
graces changed
by love untold
blessings more than
what was fated –
took your breath
and kept your soul

another me ~

was you
and somewhere else
before another you had been
and I a blossom burst
against your heart
a melody remembered
you can’t believe you’re gone
how many winds
have willed your world apart

and faint for disbelieving
faint for words we said that day
and scribbled letters
one by one
into the dark decay

bare beneath ten thousand
ancient lights
you touched me then
I touched you back
and only this I ask
come again
when glaciers melt the silent seas
when mountains peak
to valleys
when canyons scream

will you know the me
that held you
know these fingers
once entwined
was longing born of loving
another me
another time

I’ve heard them say
when listened as they whispered
down the hall
there’s a better way
to get it back
another way to have it all

tell the story
tell the teachers
tell them all you loved me more

when you looked at life this morning
I was the smile
you wore

beyond the sunny day
in places never called by name
I’m the other one
another day
another love (you loved) the same

come back to you
come back to me
remember what I said
when the sky was blue
and ships were sailed as clouds
above our heads

I was watching you
you were watching me
was this the dream of dreaming of
how could I know
forever this
the first (the last)
enough

gathered in me ~

Was not the first
I’d come again…
reeking of woodsmoke
folded near inside my shirt…
names that should be new;
the taste of somewhere else
triggered in the calling.

Silence (clinging) feels the same
a sweet familiar love –
remembered all the reasons
why I left…
to come again
pulling at pieces
truth exposed –
another piece of cloth,
clothes that fit me (still…)
I’ve walked the house once we built –
shaded by the orchard —
Planted small,
and grew into the barn…

Now both
are gone, and I (unaware)
possess the only picture
of how it was…
the broken yard and crooked gate,
cattle nursed by a patch of
weed (and will…)
a swing of mismatched
boards…slouched below
outstretched arms
an oak —
your father planted
(your mother cursed)…

Was there
we loved…
(as no one ever had),
feather mattress
stuffed and stitched (new)
for us, and wrapped
in sacks of blue…
We spoke in hushed whispers
(secrets tumbling)
to the flicker of a flame
burnt the mantle black —
shadows melted (moments)
long ago
(but not so) far…

finished
before the start became
an end was writ…
I never understood…

in the quiet still
before I find you (first)
I breathe,
The world
that I remember…
is again…
a feather swept
(across) my soul;
words uttered to silence;

this –
memory of yet to be
and the smell
of burning pine…

the way to becoming ~

of the places
we passed –
on our way to becoming
there were times
taken back
for a while to reflect
as sunlight burned holes
in the feet of our longing
and eyes searched the shadows
for nights barely done –

poems laid out
in uneven patterns
lessons forgiving
each name said aloud
mysteries turned by our faith in forever
in moments unspoken
given voice
by the clouds

red clay horizons
and blue opal brushes
twilight and words without shame
cactus grew wild
at the edges of memory
as somewhere
the skies painted
pictures of us –

in ribbons of
bluebird and flame

stories almost read ~

had I one more
grace to give
and not much more
worth keeping –
than roads I’ve come
to bring you love –
kneeling now in prayer

forgotten
every sorrow fell
grief beyond my season –
another dawn
is waiting me
lest I wander there

violet shades
of winter ash –
and canyons lit by longing
days to walk
and warmth we willed
to stay

as colors of the
sweetest songs –
winds the same as ever
shall free the lowly spirit
from the silence
of the grave

stir to voice
these fragile words
and give them place
to matter
save for me the mystery
of stories almost read –

stay the night
another life
that I might find your
wishes –
hanging by a prayer
beside my bed

two step ~

sixty-five acres
on the edge of forever
east of the river
that runs to the sea
taking the last
of my reason held over
and eighteen more candles
left burning for me

when the first to let go
of unspoken promise
a cedar box laden
with white china dreams –
picture frames filled
with the illusion of magic
teacups could never
hold everything

twenty-one pears
and two dozen peaches
an orchard too small
for the plans I allowed
when nothing could stop me
the pantry was empty
crystal blue soldiers
(what’s stopping me now)

stayed up the night
til the windows were weeping
for someone (one more)
I was meaning to count
had I not been alone
when the record was started
for a lifetime (a moment)
of living too long

I cried and I cursed
begged for another –
and banged every door
on my way to the porch
made myself sick
with things I’d forgotten
in a place filled with ghosts
I can’t put away

lace to the lids
my grandmother’s curtains
ruined her linens
one night in the barn
wrapped in a tablecloth
bed facing heaven –
shared every secret
come true with the dark

where is the ribbon
you loosed from my hair
the color of twilight
and yesterday’s truth
was stored in my closet
in an old cigar box
with a penny I found
while looking for you

one step
and backwards
watch for the table –
eyes search the shadows
for somebody home
swirling and twirling
east toward the river

were not for the peaches
I’d already be gone

fragile as a month
of mondays
sky lit up with amber shows –
lazy as a dream returning
down these crooked
dusty roads

drop me by
the way to someplace –
wandered home this way before
told myself another story –
I won’t miss you any more

the way so weary
trees were crying –
bowed to bone beside the creek
red sky nights
of ruby ribbon
whisper strung from evergreen

wrote a note
with purple crayon –
pinned it to the lantern’s bright
begged you find me
on the pasture –
counting lives by firelight

first as I and you were
early –
caught your look of sweet surprise
paradise was missing somewhere –
dare I step into
your eyes

asked you not
of plans for leaving –
drew a map to heaven’s gate
told you more
than I could ever
take it back
one word too late

knew their names
each constellation –
sisters
brothers
venus
mars
traced them all as if I never
knew you’d go –
this close
this far

paper birds ~

come at last an answer
to questions unremembered
as who you were for me
is nothing left –
ashes to be swept across
these traces of forever –
so sweetly now
the grey dove
sails away

heaven has no bounty
beyond my will to wander –
so gather me
as glories to your breast
raise the window
break the plate
burn the fields of clover –
but barter not the moon
that knows me best

was more to me
than kingdoms come
or something someone said
beg for once you listen
with your heart
the last of summer sweat
is threatening the harvest –
as soon the snow will rise
beyond the barn

turn the page
to evermore
curse the verses passing
evidence of something here
I should have given time –
my hands are moving slower
as sets the evening shade
– will surely reconcile
to take my pen

that is my way
twisted as these sashes
yellow apron –
daisy damp aginst my drum
pleads my soul confess –
the only thing
I know for sure –
is likely now to falter

what name shall bitter taste
upon my death

weave my ribbons
bring the vase –
but let the pearls be scattered
loosed onto the path
as I was one –
I go as rain
to thirsty roots –
dreams of golden harvest
e’en as waters rush
to touch the sun

carry me the way
as then – to places
without memory
still me with ten thousand
paper birds
cast me on the silver lake
and let my story follow –
the eastern breeze
shall take of me
your name

wanderer ~

before the day was come
and love remembered us as one –
where gardens grew
impatient toward the light
wherein a single word was heard
as hands were joined with hearts
as echoes rolled
from first and then
the other –

as years begotten years
flowers rushed to blossom –
petals of the wanderer
poems of a saint
lullabies were written o’er
and evermore forgot –
touch the only thing
the same as then

breathe into the universe
the psalm of letting go –
whisper love
as once you did
– I never let you know
the way into the open
was the journey we become
who am I – you wonder
even now

reflection of
the best of you
enough is more than right
– dusty roads
and beds beneath the black
stars return each one
by name
for who you were just then
when walking back
beside the garden wall
