save us
from the bitterness
comes as winter snow
pressed against the windowpanes
when nights are long
and cold

when holding back
means holding on
they warned us not to chance
would never be the same again
these lives of circumstance

the tell-tale sign
of autumn leaves
september claims the skies
a half an ounce of lonely
will drown you every time

when taking back
that goodbye kiss
there never should have been
distance passed
without a word
this silence to defend

silver threads
and thirteen moons
a key without a mate
held as truth a little while
these souvenirs of fate

you faced
the noonday sun
with wonder why you came
I was laughing
as the clouds rolled in –
and praying it would rain

when a moment stilled
eternity –
with memory of the fall
you were watching me
as I reached for you –
when nothing moved
at all

no mistaking of the promise
though left to wonder
when would be –
a goodbye kiss
for taking back
a date with destiny

I wish you knew ~

was a morning stilled
by dew to frost
steam rolled off a winter lawn
was there before
the sun woke up
I lay beneath the stars
at dawn

I listened hard
would comfort come
eyes closed tight,
my arms spread wide…
would I be blessed
to hold you still —
I spoke your name
and wept inside

I wish you knew
of thoughts unshared —
of love unspoke
my sore regret
for moments passed
alone and far,
I wonder —

will you find me
yet

a startled bird
a swirling leaf
a gentle sigh — as breath to skin

I sense you here
as warmth — the sun
is woke from sleep
to burn again

he swore
the buffalo were bigger
(tho how he knew – he couldn’t say)
sheets of storm
to claim the valley

nights
(they took his breath away)

was made a bed
of fur and needles
bear and bull
another claim
fathers lost (and fathers keeping)
watchful stars above the plain
spoke of times
the air much sweeter
mountains emptied blue and clear
sunlight fell to love
around them
whispers (only they could hear)

told of darkness
pressed to shadows
swirled in branches (cedar smoke)
someone came
the world to promise
with practiced pen
were lives rewrote
of far away (the leaving lonely)
left behind was paradise
ceilings kept a view
of heaven
longing pooled in sacred light

blessed place
of blood and honor
none could prosper
from disgrace

nights he wanders still (as thunder)
rolling herds of wind
and rain

now the page ~

mercy come
as mercies will
into the rite of slumber
and wait the waking eyes
to understand
the light beyond
was come into
the night without concession
stilled beside the river
was our lives

turning home
as one to know –
another shall be waiting
the roads between
and those we made anew
tie these strings
into the boughs
sing of something better
was held within the silence
secrets to the breast

honor me
as I have you –
speak that I might find you
waited by the door
where once you fell
give of me the story
become as one with mine
as everafter written
now the page

verses lie beneath me
where two were once
made one
wrapped in rhyme
and set afire by word

yearning ~

as mother blood
and sister time
wing and wind and water
come as one
with knowledge of before
was felt the same
has always been
 deep within the yearning
when writing down the ways
of every thing

inheritance
of living past
still uncertain signs
as black the cry
still rings above the blue
was blessing to the stone
bring to us
your holy stories –
our path to keep
was always there below

lest we choose
again as then –
tho still without believing
familiar clothes
were given us
to wear beneath our skin

as velvet scars
to cross the grain
where tender touch remaining
and nights
when e’en the dark
was pulled away

fearing not this loving ache
when turned from trust
to sparing
the pain to know
as knowing sometimes does

the same as first
you carried
with visions of forever
the sky would fall
and weeds would steal your sound

til every bed was dried
and ears forgot to listen
leagues to march
as wars
to break in two

rewritten to the memory
are lives we couldn’t save
buried now beneath the willow tree
and given none –
the name I speak
e’er the spirits linger
in keeping me with memory
words to understand

of lifetimes past
we were before
might the ink be lifted
to reveal another word –
beneath the word

written to a place
within the soul

mother blood
remembers now –
things we dare not say
sister time
returning us
into the love
we know

breath ~

as calm would wash
a weary world
with winds –
the weight of stone
or tears
the shape of ships
once rescued by the storm

as concious thought
to souls endeared
a place beyond the knowing
of destinies returning us
into the way of one

come to me
in silences
as rain within the rain
crossed beneath a kiss
upon my wrist

marked the two becoming
of need with sure desire
e’er weakness wear a name
I couldn’t say
or hasten me to realms
where dreams become reality
the one to know
as I was come to be

naked as the vine
to raise the angry thorn
bested by each trial
was blossomed here
laid apart by innocence
worn within these veils
as sheets to sweat
the night away –
and verses to forget

gather news of evermore
as marked the road I came
a blush of rose
as memory of my birth

take as I will give you
go as still it goes
within your own
bent to sound
so different now
than e’er was spoken here
would bid me come
into these places known

eternities as written
it would be
before I was
winds would find me waiting
as wonder to reveal

held within your arms
another time
when time was new –
passed along as breath
before the night
already still

and all that I remember
is of you

reminded of another ~

for a moment
of unspoken faith –
alone among the cedars
and dared my pen confess
of all I see

of light to split
the eager black –
a call to life somewhere
echoes ring of aches
upon the breeze

shadows shift
where spirits roam –
between the bear and afid
surely here –
the honey smells
of wine

where was I
when yesterday –
the need to find my keeping
when took to heart
a path beyond the pines

sweetly as a morning tear
I’m reminded of another
when once I stood
and all the world
was still

pages bent from aged bark
syllables grow silent
cast to words no longer spoke –
longing shall reveal

mists along an eastern ridge
where songs are being practiced –
nightbirds flee protection
by the sun

there as I was started
by these truths I knew before
turns with me to home
before the day
begun

framed by the sun ~

further than most
were daring adventure
and wandered I more
to those moments
of flight

truth held by silence
together (this ever)
and yet for the soul –
to remember me now

as writing to places
undone by the rhyme
and what was the vow
worth holding in trust
awaiting again
this reason to come

of somewhere
a life
never planned
awaits in the fold
of venus to clovers –
as love without need
for a time

or division of meaning
what of mine yours –
as the face
now framed
by the sun

in the dawn
where my dreams
are gathered to seed
and I –
but a pillow of stars

worlds we cannot see ~

let it be
beyond the need to know
of songs – the heart –
unwritten
but carried by a swarm
of ancient bees

beyond the reach
of destinies
wilderness grows wilder
nectars of forever
are weaved into the trees

whispered by the waters
as passed between the canyons
flowing ever gently
o’er stones
by sorrow thrown

fell against a morning
years before our waking –
sealed with us
uncertain fate
as one again we know

might ever we be witness
eyes to search the darkness
a flame –
another flicker –
reveals familiar ways

as those to understand us
winds retain the memory
of birth –
a new hope rising
from worlds we cannot see

hands to hold
remembered us –
as wonder without reason
swarms of bees still gather
how sweet
our name to know

just this ~

would e’er my words
be sworn to ash
wings above the fire
stilled within the quiet
of feathers met in time

strummed to life
in worlds I’ve found
a place beyond the seen
leave me there
without the want to know
what lies between

chord to lay
across the bow
as lover set to silence
stretched above the day
to wrap around

a perfect night
of wayward stars
surrendered by the moon
and rolled into a river
running north

kiss my sleepy eyes
just before the veil is lifted
forever leaves
a sweetness
on my lips –

no more have I
the rest to know
of all I am becoming
heaven here
my hands to hold –
just this
