awhile

was a while
before the setting
remembered by the moon
as flame the night ablaze
within the chill –
chatter of a crooked porch
swayed beneath the tin
where pieces of eternity –
were moments
standing still

bury me
I heard them say
I wonder did they know
the time would soon be coming
to obey
promise never meant to keep
passions here for long
sealed within the fluttering
of words we couldn’t say

names the same
as numbers
dates not far between
the starting out for places
never known
letters meant for someone else
are chiseled to the bark
fields of autumn dancers –
wave me home

silence I’ve committed
every thought to memory –
delight me now
the blossom of the soul
brush of ancient laurels
weaved into a crown
bury me –
the coming back
I won’t have far to go

fleeting

steal the honey
trade my voice –
of Persian poets to linger
rubbing rubber bands
across my rhyme
soothe the beast
of wanting
for wilder –
this retreat
into the nevermore
evading me

of opal song
and rapture willed
beyond this brief existence
uttered soft
a language yet I know
silver words
to cut the gums –
swallowed without question
for where the poison sits
when it is done

mark my way
with berries –
black the pathway ripe
curs’ed be
each memory of briar
dare the day to waking
messy traps
and all –
lure me back with poems
written here

time is but
a squinty eye
staring at the world –
fleeting was his vision
to behold
a history no one could see
paths of fear and fable
blankets pulled aside
to let the cold

listen now
within the greys
shadows sometimes fall
and I shall lean
into your line of love
knowing
as I always have
the tempting taste of sorrows
worn into this wonder
of women wearing wings

will to me
the water
where once the well
went dry –
close the book
when leaving here
but let the cup
remain

caneyfork

in the breath
forever caught between –
they held me in their hands
waiting in the stillness
for the clouds to part
for lungs to memorize the cold –
thunder gathered thick
before the storm

then someone said “amen”
and they let go….

and I drifted
like a psalm –
a puff of smoke
spread like morning fog upon the water
held by the wind
rushed by the waves
to gather me home

forever one with the river
forever one with their song
some sat down
others ran beside
forever one with the current
one with their hands

never having to say goodbye
the river took us all

veil

of dates and times
the map considers –
rivers span eternities
frigid depths
of icy splinters
ring the gates of destiny

compass worn
by wishful thinking
one more day of nights
shall come
burning white within the darkness
gathered now our souls
to home

mystery denied solution
what of life
is waiting still
what of breath
shall leave me living
more than time
the moss to seal

pardon come
with sure forgiveness
all that was – is now
the same
rivers flow
eternal waters –
carry life
from whence we came

mistook

rock me the cradle
was broken before
and warm not these lips
with regret
childless to walk
eternity’s night –
awaiting my sins to forget

wrapped in the darkness
survived by the womb
heaven nowhere
but my sleep
voices inside me
arguing so
and I without reason
or promise
to keep

loneliness dreams
in colors of grace
an almost forgotten shade
forever stood long
by the side of the bed
remembering life
unafraid

where will I go
when all I have left
are questions of
anger and shame
of sacred forgiveness
reserved not for me
demons shall carry
the weight
of my name

take of my slumber
grieving not once –
for a life
filled with reasons to die
curs’ed the ground
where peace finds no rest
as pain reconciled
to goodbye

rock me the cradle
was broken before
and warm not these lips
with regret
childless to walk
eternity’s night –
awaiting these sins to forget

graced

within the silence
of the heart –
echoes of another
and lives so barely lived
were filled with light

trembled now
the tired soul –
spilled as prayer with sorrow
asking for but one
a truth revealed

wash upon these places
ease beyond the night –
but rob us not
the memory
of their love

guard the sleep
of dreamers –
wake them slow to peace
fearless to embrace
another morn

sweeter now
the whispered hope
revived from long ago –
promising a life
beyond this life

smiles remembered
everywhere –
where healing is begun
angels wait familiar now –
as faces to the sun

of tears

show to the fallen
the strength into flying –
the broken
of bliss to reclaim
the place we were going
was yesterday here
we walked through a world
not the same

assurance
the word we dare
not remember –
take not of these for thy own
blind me believing
another hereafter
is written to pages
unknown

of all
and of none –
of every we are
together no different
the way
warned of the flame
held without love –
and left unprepared
for the pulling away

bless us
forgive us
grant us compassion
for more than the grieving
connecting us all
help us in holding –
the world for our reaching
for the one who sits broken
tomorrow shall fall

lifetimes
since the first hello –
seasons fell to season
and I can
ne’er recall
the taste of snow

or perfume
spent on clementine
jasmine in the spring –
lullaby every cricket knows
silver thread
a fiddle weaves –
wing’eds flying blind
sail me now
the way they know
by heart

by distance
of a lowly beat
measurement of soul –
secrets lost somewhere
above the tide

morning comes
disguised by those –
forgotten it was night
but living as a moment
such as this –

the lowly time
of only times –
who shall proffer more –
than rivers flowed
we called
by other names

honeybees
and cedar trees
needles
nests
and nothing
the grace of eden
stirs within the still

guard us now
the knowing –
eternity is come
as heaven fell to earth
while it was dark

watching

as eternal
my beholding
to the places still I go
tho pushed between
these edges
sharp and deep
as truth was
held beneath the tides
to bring the drifter home –
and set against
the lover’s sacrifice

as dark
the ways to travel
and worried there alone
of where the stars were leading
(let them lead)
casting long
our tattered nets
into the sweet divide
made between this world
and those beyond

fragile
as the ancient cord
barely seen at all –
tho stretched to hold
of all together now
as one to understanding
let here the thread be cut
as each was sworn
another time
to be

longing
keeps a whisper
to remind us of the rest
when songs were sang –
and hearts
knew only one
garner me
the sacred cup –
let my body rise
beholding to the night
would come for me

. . .

stolen

of these
and no more
I would swear
my allegiance –
and let not another tear fall
would pass unafraid
to the edge of the knife
with courage to suffer
for all

restless to wander
the last one arrived
to places I already know
held as a child
whispered a lover
of somewhere I passed
a long time ago

were doubt
and regret –
of sorrows to sew
shared of a vision unseen
written to secrets
will live in my stead
and curse not
the hours between

my heart
keeps apart –
moments so dear
forever decided
as stars without shame
fell not the distance
of years into light –
or splintered by thought
into flame
