frighten me
the mirror was –
a friend before the light
when by the by
in shadows turned about
I thought of you
forgotten in the rush
to run away –
do you miss me now
in places you can’t stay
the roughness where the scar
was worn –
a curve beneath the bone
tears that filled my eyes
whene’er you smiled
spend with me
a moment more –
and beg me then to touch
the worst of you –
the best I came
to love

from a tender place
love was offered –
not for much the way was come
cross the plains –
the lonely valleys
into the place
where truth was found

by the maiden
and the poet –
the prophet and the scribe
glaciers melted
each remembrance
of a battle without sides

of a house
where letters waited
in the set beyond the sun
and white caps cursed the river
for his ways –

when spoke of fields
he ran between
swarms of honey bees
locust came again
to learn their song –

we wondered
would it matter
if we found their words anew –
lyrics kept in books
of honeycomb

forgotten
every reason
for the places left behind
slept as moths
in sheets of silken cord –

gave the story over
to a blanket
in the woods –
promises grew wild
beyond the door

fences fell
as heaven raised –
lines across the dawning
names were met with silence
whene’er we gave our own

a place apart –
we could not speak –
was more than rhyme or verses
poems would be empty
for a while –

but somewhere still
the hive – she glows
with longing for another
sweeter now – the stories
of our love

facing south ~

I papered peacocks
o’er the roses
and moved the walls around
were facing south
the barn – to block the moon
but who am I complaining
to the gods
of northern lights
when shadows dare to grow
beneath the pines

who goes there
yet no one ever answers
though I swear I’ve heard
gossip after dark
listen – can’t you hear me
would they rather that I worry
fearful of their presence
on the lawn
who am I
I wonder what they know

do they haunt the night
to question where I’ve gone

where we were ~

more of me
is just this much
a season born of wasting
waves where once
the colors scattered
sweetly to the day
were crushed beneath
our summer slippers
waltzing past
the meadow’s green
touch so fleeting –
who remembers
where we were
when we flew away

with ribbons ~

spirits curse
to know the pain
beyond the silk of scars
no more these pangs
of innocence
of wishes raised to stars

a last request
for healing hands
would come as need to prayer
before the cross
(forgiven now)
when left our love
somewhere

as joy
restored from wandering
down this lonesome road (begin)
would cleave us to another
else we choose this way
again

to lace the night
with ribbons
else the poet wonder why
we dreamed
that we were angels lost
silver birds
against the sky

counted covers ~

before my lazy stirring
to the day that lay in wait
when dreams were tugging gently
come away
somewhere near
a nightbird flew
with wings to graze my sleeping
awaken dear
I’ve made a sky for you
back and forth
as to and fro –
a glance across the shadows
what time has got away
and still to spare
wonder weaves in prisms
across these counted covers
dare I see at all
what’s waiting there
remembered now admonishment
you’ll sleep your life away
thirty years
have come and gone again –
pastel paper lines the walls
glories guard the gate
steps to mark the wonder fell between
and where I’ll go
as daylight climbs to reach
my everafter –
a leaning porch (I don’t have time to mend)
sleepy arms
and hungry hands
stretch to touch the branches –
wings to graze as smiling
I begin

talk with bears ~

how might the night
be slept away
and yearned but for another
heaven here on earth
as whiter
snowflakes swirled

from somewhere else
much colder now
than ash by fate decided
were stones beneath the rapids
polished cedar bark

where all was still
but for the bears
without the words to warn us
spoke only to each other
of spring
their next goodbye

lanterns lit
and lightning bugs
were settled down in secret
brushed into illusion
as skies of indigo

so slow the dawn
returning
to breathless apprehension
six months denied
the glow of sacred sun

whispers I remember
as planets moved together
bears to talk with bears
the night shall talk
to none

unafraid ~

waiting
and unafraid
unafraid to be seen (to see)
trusting of love
(the truest) to go
wherever I would go
(even as I must dream)

away the dark
restored the light
as love (might I declare)
my only proof
when pieces fell
(and fit) together there

destinies are now
(beginning)
and where I am
no trace of me
exists remembered
but what was left
of lessons
(come to be)

when given light
(circles into circles)
balance for the fear(ed)
was not for me
important as the dance
(of unafraid)
sparrows breech the clouds
as angels flock
(beneath)

the crush ~

somewhere
a crush of hummingbirds
press into a garden
unsure the source
would urge them to remain
where promise
swirls in marigold
tulip trees and ivy
hovers long above a kiss
a guitar without strings

a dress of lace
to first communion
swells beneath the dew’s caress
what longing undiscovered
beats on scarlet wings

with sweetest contemplation
the path
of certain pleausre
in moments undecided
and kept as yesterday
where I shall find
another life
of times I can’t remember
the lure of honeysuckle
ten thousand miles
from home

mother of life ~

love was the message
of goddess to flora
a poem to wrap with the essence
of green
longing for comfort –
lakota lay silent
and swore there was purpose
the rest would believe

take me
to make me
the same as your sorrows
ride me at morning
to the plains of mombai
burn me to memory
of buffalo graces
the language of hope
forgiven us now

of long ago breezes
winds surely shifting
forgotten my name
as the lines blew away ~
people and colors
civilizations
eternity grieves
my vision of home

Author’s Note ~

In 1994, a white buffalo calf was born on a farm in Wisconsin. . .
the first white buffalo born in decades.

Some believe she was the fulfillment of the prophecy that the return of
the White Buffalo Calf Woman will herald the advent of an age of peace and harmony.

Now, more than any time in history, we need the sacred feminine to balance
our lives and to balance our world.  We must be spiritual warriors – culling
the profound and important aspects of the power of feminine wisdom
and directing them toward peace within, as without, and utilizing the energies
of the goddess and all mythical women and spiritual heroines
to help direct the course of history.
