homeagain

for heaven
might I hesitate
the giving of my all
or barter here
for one more yesterday
when willing met
with needful dreams
one night beneath
the boughs
sealed within the silence
of truths we couldn’t say
as proof allowed
in making less
soul to bind my weary soul
words
the stars mistook
for let me in
whispers to the
forest floor
swirling luna flight
breath
where once
your ache
became my skin

sea glass
and marble
rubble and shell
fortunes
glistening sands
histories humbled
by yesterday’s tide
the soul of a mountain
a river returns
seagull and starling
fluttering winds
journeys endeared
by the naming
of stars
shores where
our destinies lay
whirlpools
and castles
spun of a dream
lust of the moon
for the whispering
waves

names
by some forsaken
the fondest memories
a slight of hand
a slower fate than most
whispers sworn
to secret
reserved for us the same
reminders of another
love I knew –
will I
remain

a silent praise
along the path
for someone no one knows
hands are folded
quilts are wearing through
who of me
I wonder
will there be
when I am gone –
will one return
to speak my name
aloud

. . .

I moved back to Tennessee in 1991.  Three days after the
first on the porch, I noticed something along the back fence line – an edge
amid the briar.  It was a portion of cemetery marker, apparently from
the time when many civil war battles were fought nearby.

There is no name…only dates.  When days are hot, it is a place of retreat,
and many poems have found word there.  Yesterday morning, it seemed
the only place to be – held by one without a name, as witness to my tears.
(I shall give).

Image: 1998 somewhere between here and the place where I was born.  Souls
sleep where solace grows deepest.  “Ask not for whom the bell tolls….”

will
and I wonder
to places unknown
forgotten the weeds –
my way back to home
a secret
unspoken
by lovers and thieves
echoed by crickets
knees
touching knees
a hymnal
of feathers
as light through the pines
souvenirs left by
the rain
where was I going
who waits the dawn
with promise
of heaven
to love me
again

Author’s Note: I love the woods and I love the shore. A couple of years back, while sitting on my porch, I closed my eyes and raised my face to the sun. But the breeze, he told me something more. In that moment, I noticed the song that is the fluttering of leaves. It is the same as the waves on the shore. I wonder who knew it first, but wonder not at the love that allowed them to share it.

how tender
these blessings of
sapphire and pearl
oceans singing
of leaves

still

he said
there’ll be another day
to wonder where you are
and just how far
from leaving me returned
when made your way
from here we stood
near and I your breath
a place between the living
you are missed
with rhyme
the same
as evermore
hurt beneath the heal
poems took my heart
to write them down

she said
but for a moment
eternity is proof
of all you said would be
before we were
counting steps
from yesterday
round and through my soul
one more pen
one more willing page
write my name
in cursive
letters fit with yours
lean into the silence
I’ve become
the memory of
everything
we thought we knew before

the memory
of everything
you love

the wind
yet remembers
the weight of my willing
another I was
but a girl – only ten
crickets and
tadpoles
blackberry winters
barefoot as
lifetimes
recalled to me then

spirits
carry me
home by the river
out past the waiting
once promised
for us
a truth
undecided
as roads without name
an echo of someone
I used to be –
loved

graces
drift a winter home
snowflakes dance about
caught in ancient webs
of holding on
a lover’s breath
reminds the earth
of hope – a sweeter spring
familiar lust
as blossoms yet asleep
wrapped in leaves
of marigold –
november warned about
a sudden chill
and paths of
silent white

surely

I’ve no cause
this grace
to squander
another kiss
for one more grave
nameless dates
to honor nothing
lest for joys
one tear be saved

as sparrows
carved of time
and cedar
roost beneath
an endless night
dreams awake
beyond the dreamer –
wrapped in cords
of sacred light

beyond the pale
of once remembered –
beyond the reach of eager hands
time is worn
against our longing –
strained the heart
to understand

beyond the glow
of one more season –
one more everafter here
reason bears
the weight of waiting –
names and places
folded near

Wednesday
without willing push
repentance I have heard
is weighed upon
the soul
but not for long
some other
time
a burden felt
for passing in between
the time before
I knew
you’d never stay

. . .

Author’s Note: The image is from my office window. I
call it my Robin tree.
