I can’t say ~

been sitting in the shadows
waiting long
the night to fade –
nursing day old coffee
with a shot of lemonade

talking talk with stars
as moonbeams
fell between the boughs
said a prayer or two
(one more amen)
for blessings given now

for warmth that wraps
my longing heart –
words that bare my soul
faith to see (beyond the dark)
another place I go

need not the signs
(or something more) to show me
what is real
leaves are turning –
light is breaking
(ask me how I feel)

deep within this stillness
something moves my joys to tear –
knowing what I know
of who I am
(and none to fear)

for all the morning
promise –
tangled wish of love and lace
for reasons I can’t tell you –
love remembers (me)
this place

the night birds shift
as prisms cast
a lowly face
to light

twas not for me
to sacrifice
names denied their place
of lovers never knowing –
something more to me
than grace

the ways to home
so seldom clear –
as fate sometimes unfair
dreams are weaved to lockets –
ribbons for my hair

to share of these
sweet mysteries –
of questions yet to be
answers wrapped in waiting –
return as love to me

forgotten now
our reasons –
time was stopped by will to know –
wonder still surrounds me
when nights are long
and cold

reminders of forever –
few can borrow
none can steal –
of moments we remain the same
as first the truth revealed

a rush of breath
becomes my skin –
as voices haunt the dark
a love beyond
my reasoning –
awaits my eager heart

parable of destinies
awaits a new foretelling
as one to know
so few will understand –
the past can never be returned
but never is it ended
in places
we remain –
the arrow flies

as every wing
is sworn to soar
a path across the window –
seas forever parted
by a wayward
butterfly

beyond the proof
of heaven –
fathers keep an ancient vow
lives within the reach
of dreams –
awake to us
somehow

truth endears
the willing soul –
and stills these fits of slumber
tears are turned to smiles
(within our hope)

silence spans
the narrow bridge
moments fall around us
long the night
to keep us satisfied

in seeking truth –
we honor love
in these –
these mortal visions
parable of coming home
across the evening tide

backwards ~

rings overlapping
as fate to discover
some mystery there
in the place we become
as flame to a flicker
wings to a vapor
forever returning us
backwards
to home

to the words
of beginning
the seed barely planted
bring forth the baby
a mother to feed
e’en now in the darkness
loving arms worry
for the empty confession
a lingering need

breath to remember
from long nights
awakened
with light in our veins
another night’s fire
dreams of the journey
weaved to our memory
a warm resignation
of burning desire

when couldn’t
we wouldn’t
turn from returning –
somewhere
are others
repeating our name
to the edge of existence
eternity stretches –
to make of this moment
the reason
we came

lullaby ~

come for me
when redbud blossoms
scarlet –
‘neath the winter
when the lowly dove
sits silent in the pines

carry me
to places –
you remember as forever
as wings to break the darkness –
turned to love
the nick of time

speak for me
in rhyming words – verses
I’ve neglected
falling into worlds
I thought I knew

breathe
and I will share them all
til none are left to wonder –
where you end
and I (the same)
begin

come to know
as love allows –
the story of redemption
pages where your name
is written there

fill the morn with laughter
take of me –
the sweetest part
and write a song
(a lullaby) of us

walk the porch
as daylight trails
eager to our shadows –
told by lace
of mysteries somewhere

bring to me your longing –
your compass
and your sorrows
wear for me the light
that is your face

come for me
when years are but a mark
upon the mantle –
where age is nothing more
than letting go
garner me
the promise –
of all I ever wanted
awakened by a whisper
come for me

chasing daylight ~

e’er we speak
of sweeter dawns
storm clouds refuged by the sun
of other days (just like today)
rained a rainbow every one

of consequence
afforded me –
what was meant (and who can know)
of promise left
where none can see
sleeps between my heart and soul

knew of joy despite the cost –
finding truth in moments missed
stayed the darkness
for a poem –
line for line
another kiss

who will come to understand –
would bring me home
with one more sigh –
wash the dishes
beat the rugs –
chasing daylight into night

talk is cheap but I can hear –
wonder still to words you said
goodbye lingers with the dawn
stealing memory
from my bed

coming back going ~

kept to these pieces
of coming back
going
living and dying the rest to define
one more get busy
and lived I
to tell it –
how strange seems the pattern
of meaning to find

the ends
of beginning –
for ways undiscovered
questions revealing
the answers to more
ways as were destined
to sleep the night
waiting
with boots by the table –
and back to the door

and knew not of love
kept me from leaving
as pieces broke off
a handle – a key
lines through the linen
threads of another
as once I was given
this time to foresee

as notes
to the margins –
words underlined
bled through forever
to find us again
to wonder of reasons
and names now forsaken
words without marker –
reminders of when

the past lay unbroken
as blue satin slippers –
worn down the path
I cleared long ago
where now
the night sits
at the edge of my wonder –
warmed by the memory
of light on my soul

no one looking ~

lowly burst
of orchid light
spoke to me this morning –
reciting now another tale
of voices you forgot

to bring to me
with apricot
a coffee cup of bourbon
and swirled between the leaves
of summertime –

a mystery surviving
as time was surely true
with chances still to take
and secrets told
dream the part
where I am yours –
and you my only weakness
write it down
before the night grows cold

burn the wick
against the grail –
and pray the harvest matters
more than these few pieces
of desire

lay with me
the winter –
and I shall not be hurried
to plant your seed
where now the ground
is hard

but strangers cry
and pastures sometimes grow
with no one looking
dandelion wishes
melt into the light –

clover tied to
hummingbird –
as silver leaf to luna
slow the change of colors
marble eyes
to spy –

come the dawn
tomorrow owns –
wake in me december
steal the story I’ve become
the orchid to confess

drummer ~

calm the storm
against my waning –
press me not for names or dates
some evidence of where
I wasted –
or solace come for me
too late

still my drum
with loving timbers –
beg its music rise the same
once as one
returning cadence
twins returned to single flame

as come before
in this to tarry
seek not of truths I left behind
lest your journey
be for nothing
save for evidence
of mine

sit the sun
upon the ‘morrow
call me back into your will
pierce the veil
of comprehension –
e’er this earthy cup
be filled

with love beyond
my need to measure –
boundless now
this living balm
ancient drums of silent thunder –
wing the soul
to spirits calm

wrapped in rain ~

come the early chill
of autumn
maple spurned by drying leaves –
there blossoms of december
sleep beneath
her mystery

come the blush of frost
a snowflake –
to seal the blessed earth
ageless as the rings
surrounding –
burned to black
her lowly birth

before the spring was made
to suffer
one more fall beyond our reach
sacred vow of consecration
wrapped in rain –
the willows breech

to stand before –
alone untethered
more by faith that one of time
seeks the truth
but knows its answer –
one more bud
to break the vine

beyond this fleeting
intuition –
hope for one more
warm embrace
before the sun concedes to shadow
cedars watch the night
for grace
