it was a time
reserved for wishing
– the fields were flush
with grain
when a boy
of almost nothing
stood his ground
he dreamed in shades
of fourteen years
a girl behind the glass
found him
as he found her
leaning in
offered up a place to go –
folded worlds of wonder
took no mind
to what they’d find
tears and joy
and laughter
sailing out
beyond the window pane
three months
down a dusty road
he found the nerve
for asking
far more than this
more than lives could bear
took her for a midnight ride
down across the border
trading rings
and counting stars
between
another then
and moments past
without the need
for telling
what was left
and all a heart might hold
rockabye
and baby –
let the buntin stay
for all we know
was this
our chosen way
now again
the road becomes
a path someone forgot
leaves are falling
scarlet
round my bed
reminders sit in flannel
sheets of gabardine
where he was
she fills
the time between
Author’s Note: In September 1955, a man and a woman shared
their first kiss. He was 23 and she only 14. Three months later,
they married, and two months after that, he was discharged from the Air Force.
Seven days later, he started a job he would work for 52 years. Nine
months after that seven days, I was born. Still they yearn for
one more kiss, and I am blessed on this day – when they celebrate the
start of so very much love.
Story is everything.

of truth
the soul remembers
as falling
tears became
a promise made
– what more the light
might bring
settled down
these wantings –
of cedar planks
and pine
songs are writ
to circles –
angels sing
back into
the starting
and who would blame
our grief
for seasons
thrice denied
the taking in
winter pulls
the shadowed moon
with longing
for the first –
willing only this –
to love again

gather not
to story
the wages
made of sin
forgiving fault
– were grace
to take us in
speak not ill
the passing
lest for stones
your journey stall
remembered love
was come
to save us all
each tender word
– a sacred touch
of truths
we cannot see
alight the path
of darkness
our chosen destiny
a bitter charge
delayed us once –
mending now the whole
scars
the same as falling stars
aligning heart
and soul

as time
removed
the realm of clock
bound not hand
to hand –
dreams may change
tho here we are
the same
worn into
the waking
of one more chilly dawn
names are held
in silence –
prayer
becoming light
as faith
to carry –
safe within the
colors of my soul
echoes of forever –
a story
left untold
before
and still
I know
as I know
you won’t forget
there were some
you loved
– and some
who love you
yet

split the light
to shadows
chance of
willing tears
to wash the lawn
and there
granddaddy
gleans
pressed against the shutters
almost made it in
before the night
made claim
to different dreams
scattered round
were wishes
some fallen
eager stars –
and wings remembered
way too close
the flame
embers
turned to ashes
someone grieves
their leaving home
I shall pray
for one more morning
stay
with want
for ever after –
a paradise
made here
quiet
as the morning
climbs the trees

within the breath
of now begins
another page I write
with only this
– a memory
of flight
flashing lights
betray the dark
and once again
I follow
the coming back
where I shall find you new
swept along
on lullabies –
sing me home
another
time we passed
of moments –
o so few
prayers awake
as secrets take
the heed
of my confession
to speak aloud
the poetry of trust
gather me
carry me –
will me now
to hurry
– my soul is freed
to wear the name
of love

she spins
in sleeves
of flannel
worried not for word
counts the stars
by name
(gives them
hers)
cursing not
the seeker
nor winds
to take him far
beyond the light
(still
within her arms)
♥♥
in sweet
she pulls
at shadows
and wanders then
to dream
of wishes made
(and where
their burning rests)
in choice
denied the choosing
fortunes yet
untold
for love beyond
her knowing
(gratefulness)
