story me now
the life before someday
and who I was then
seems you’re all I know
when held as we were ~
(in the place we don’t mention)
the truth passed beyond
the choice to let go

riddles in rhyming
just suppose nothing
wherein we ~ the dream ~
made our way to the now
back to the places
always we linger
where you were (somewhere)
forgotten just how

the shade
of your eyes
is a moonlight reflection
embers to flame ~
this love to resume
as the touch of your hand ~
to the door of my longing
were lifetimes returning
to this ~ unassumed

what will come
or just where we’ll be come forever ~
a rush unremembered ~
this feeling of home

with never a thought
to untangle the answers
lest they whisper some other
don’t go ~
measuring breaths
by times barely breathing
so easy the telling
from others we’ve known

story me now
your passion for living ~
and where the light plays
on the still of your soul

I’ll start the coffee
if you’ll prop the window –
I’ll meet you here
somewhere ~
when next you are home

learned again ~

of that we knew
we’ve learned again
as difference made whole
passing as a thought
we strained to hear

as breath
against the branches
whispers test the breeze –
ashes float a torch
above the way

magic pools
reflection
of a long ago sunrise
testament of dreamer ~
to a king

honeybee and hornet
stretch to raise their canopy
of majesty made over
for the one who came to know
the world as one
surrendered to his sighs ~

innocence decided
by watchers on the wing
rakes the night
in search of words unsaid

answers written over
in the rush
to keep it all
another waits in silence ~
to question why we came

this time around ~

beyond these sparse
concessions –
hope concedes at last
the dream decided long ago –
is pardoned to the past

as every vow repeated
let me choose again for thee –
to know of love’s arrival
in the future made for me

tho hesitated as was meant
another rise to burn
a hand to hold against my heart
as sacred truths return

to learn of me
the ways I knew
as love (my will) to know
where I would be this time around –
returning love I owe

so it is ~

there’s a softness
to surrender ~
a strangeness to goodbye
our cup of sand is gone
before we know

before was come
the call to go ~
we bend beneath our tears
counting nights by in-betweens ~
moments unto years

and so it is ~
unknown before
(so clearly now) we see
the ways we came revealing
our will ~
our destiny

adrift on time
denied of space ~
as one (reserved) for this
the universe remembers well
each memory of bliss

fear will surely rob
the soul
of reasons to begin ~
as bittersweet
the first goodbye
when salted by our sin

Author’s Note: Inspired (in part) by the quote ~
“Why didn’t I learn to treat everything like it was the last time.
My greatest regret was how much I believed in the future.”

as we are ~

buy me a ring
to wear through the winter
when nights lean to cold –
some solace to be
would trade every vow
for an old woolen blanket
and a story you told
only me

build me a house
at the edge of the river –
a place where the muscadine grows
wild as the weeds twisted about us –
nightbirds and wishes
returning to home

read me the poem
you wrote me that summer
when first came to seek
a lesson in rhyme
tease me with comforts
I might have resisted
had verses been all
you gave
of your time

share me the night
of hunters and halos –
guard me a place
untouched by the stars
remind me to breathe
without thought to surrender
of where we are going –
the same as we are

carve me a song
from maple and cypress –
chisel each note to my skin
rock me away
on the tide of a whisper
and dream me
to heaven (to heaven)
again

worn apart ~

when the day is drifted
further than I thought I could
be caught –
and I swear I hear forever
come the door –
some wolf disguised as miracle
but I won’t let him in –
even though but for a while
I thought I might

step beyond the comfort
of the way I’ve learned to be
and languish for a lifetime
in your arms –
but knowing still
the howling was not your ache
at all –
though somewhere else
your longing answers me

to know of this
another time –
another place we’re known
as gods to lean against familiar skies
to sit within a feeling
telling stories of the end –
and who was there to catch us –
let me catch you now again

before the strike
when moonlight flashes
memory on the pines
I’ll listen for the sigh
would bring you here –
but for now
the coffee’s colder
and circles ring the wood
morning’s bound to wake
before I dream

habits worn apart –
are fit together somewhere
I wait the night
and strain to hear my name

mother drum ~

within these walls
the mother drum –
she beats
a slow familiar

as a band
without the need to hurry home
beyond the curse to be defined
by history and places
echoes of a music
still to flow

loosed within these vessels
plays one song
all night
and stills for me
the changing of the guard

the heavenly host
for closing down
the last of breath to be
so silently upon the keys
I bear

mother drum
replays the verse
I knew somewhere before
without the words
I hum it in the dark

where more than song
was played upon
my own

by willing hands –
returned to tune
strings and keys
alike

stayed up nights
to learn the psalms anew –
for what of this is wisdom lost
forgotten not
the poet

for chorus lost
among these fragile notes
of dreams we played
of home –
the pillow slept

stay the place
a morning more
to feel the lullabye –
as practiced fingers
trace the grain
– heart to mother drum

hush ~

pour me the promise
of winter returning
of catfish spawned deep
in the lily pad spring

of change
when the sky blazes red
as an onion ~
and the lowly wheat bows
to the breeze

gather me ~
tulips
from six o’clock shadows
of words barely formed
melt like honey with mine

hush
don’t you worry
stay in this moment
forever ~ I noticed
has come for us now

as ever
this always –
I see you as certain
to rise on the morning
with rain on the roof

stir me with questions
(I thought you were going)
and make me a photograph
to sit on my soul

sliding through doorways
(feet barely touching)
chasing a whisper
to beds seldom made

laughter speaks volumes
as echoes of loving
anchor the moon
to the edge of the night

sworn him to secret
with tales of creation
and hope for the ‘morrow
(we can’t comprehend)

more than this magic
hands softly moving ~
to the sound of eternity
falling in place

songs were meant for you ~

as I have been
I am no less –
repeating truths aloud
something secret
captured by the wind

the same as stories –
chapters fell
as red and yellow turning
maple keeps them best
but willow wants

witness as was I
to songs were meant for you
when last I was
before we came to be

remembered
every holding on
before this hour forgiven
light reflecting
comfort through the trees

and you were there
for in that place
I found another reason
it mattered not
these mysteries to tend

was all the time
with want for none
but to find you (as you found me)

talking down the leaves –
secrets to the wind

never lost ~

have found my way
tho never lost –
to wandering I am
the line was never written
yet the dreamer read it well –

as nights rolled up
along the edge
of ancient constellations
I listened as you
reminisced on
unseen (other) lives –

of places
not so very far –
each name repeated softly
so still their echoes
settle in my ear
as somewhere we
become again –
wherever dreams revealing
of lights beyond
this passing into us

holding hands
beneath the breath
of venus everafter –
shimmers now
the same as she did then

remembers us
of passing through –
forests of submission
takes my breath
to know she knows
your heart
