near

wet leaves
scattered –
friend to foe
lunas into sorrows
flaming as the scarlet
black –
nature’s cabaret
silken souls
defend their woes
martyrs of the moon
whisper of the lying nights
nestled us between

cold beneath
the dapple light
spun amid the shadows
was come of love
when spring remembered fall
roses crushed to memory
– scents I used to wear
pressed into my hem –
a garden gate

cocked the head
of ravens –
ancient mercies
home to roost
with pieces wound
of juniper and jade –
silver voices rise
into the chilly mountain air
opal eyes reflecting
us as truth

. . .

ways by which we came ~

truth

were consequence
our one defense –
for ways by which we came
into the revelation
of our will

sing of me
when rivers fret –
your final journey home
were there my name –
in silence lingers
still

forgiven this
surrender –
to another truth I seek
glowed beyond the restlessness
of night –

carved me by the willow
into the evergreen
forsaken not the message
of your light

sit me down
in blossoms –
the color of your song
and wrestle me
to life within your lead

lay me bare
to lessons –
of living to discern
as sweet
the fall of berries
crushed by need

. . .

this time ~

here

were curses
to brush
my feelings away
as splinters
pushed deep in my soul
worn as a callus
of promise to numb –
 were moments of heaven
I know

forty years more
than my mama was young
chosen for choosing
this time
broken down places
wink in the sun
a shimmering ghost
 left behind

longing we planted
in clover and moss –
weighted to pockets
of stone
forgotten our fate
as candles died out
– habits held close
 not for long

. . .

goats and three ~

believer

to stories
I’m a stranger –
to the ways of getting in
could never cut the vines
or burn the braids –
would sail
and never wonder
why the river took you back –
polished me to legions
down below

of fairytales
a few or more –
they hardly speak of now
how goats and three
they courted me
on southern nights
somewhere
camped beneath
the bridges
when reached to find you
here
saved the night
one frosty new year’s eve

gathered now
the early show –
open hearts and willing
to understand
the leaving you alone
could never see
the mystery – eyes your shade
of blue
mercury resolved
to more than mars

who is left
to pass us on –
from cradle to the current
kaleidescope
and no one knows we’re gone
a lifetime more
than when the telling
started –
truth I’ve known
some days I scarce recall

the oldest goat
your tender touch –
rocks within the wall
and how the map was folded
on the seat
fairytales
to wonder me –
what of love is carried –
dare I cut the vines
and burn my hair

. . .

ransom for a kiss ~

choices

poppies grew
one august –
flush against the barn
and someone said
they saw a man
asleep out on the lawn

were whispers
from the kitchen –
tho no one held the proof
of where the stories
started –
while searching
for the truth

a busted fence
and thirty head
of cattle –
more or less
babies crying
 somewhere now –
 for longing unconfessed

separate beds
and darkened rooms
places kept apart –
ten thousand miles
and eighteen steps
worn between their hearts

how many sorrows
offered
as ransom for a kiss
touch reserved for evermore
was never meant
for this

a slight of girl
to question –
how to know
when love was real –
would wonder
just how long the wait
for broken hearts
to heal

…

til I say ~

filled

they warned me once
of dying –
before my time was come
of children
without mothers –
polished stone

of storms
were passed
before my birth –
carved into my canyons
a story
not yet over
til I say

tis luxury
in heartache –
precious scars
worth bleeding for –
a blessing come
for writing
in the dark

I’ve buried want
for reason –
broke the bed
and cut my hair –
gave favor
to the love
that had no home

pages bending over
lest I read them more
and more –
forsaken by
their meaning
to pretend

summer sweat
and winter rye –
some may say they knew
of vows I took
repenting –
for lifetimes passed
too soon

they warned me once
of dying –

. . .

something unsaid ~

breathe
and for a moment
eternities still
the first
the last
forever I am held
within something unsaid –
somewhere garnered a kiss long ago
falling as voice
into praise

fleeting
reminders
of places behind
will became stars
on the way
familiar longing
as hands fit to hands –
beat to beat
to heart
living done over
forgotten the sin
lips move
with nothing to say

dream
as permission
to harness the mind
curs’ed sleep
takes us home
cedar boats
to carry –
evenings rush the tide
finds a morning
waiting
to atone

. . .

birth

was a gentle breeze
half blowing
and almost there a tune
of saving grace
and love denied a name
mysteries of maple
crush the fragile lawn
while others cling
to circumstance
brittle hangers-on

of seasons
without mercy –
glories climbed between
the crooked limbs –
tho knew not how to grow
while just beneath
the stutter breathes –
stillness
dreamed awake
as blossoming to heal
the patient soul

was the bluest sky
a chill withstood –
the want for more
than light
sparrows swam above
a perfect day
would walking me around
remove the wonder
or lead me past the edges
of understanding come
in years beyond
would think of you
this way

. . .

halls of light ~

fragile

spirit lift
as flight betrayed
cool this brow of longing –
raise the window
let the wonder in

of words
my only console
was to find it written
here –
a cause for strength
in memories of light

angels
gather after dark –
to rest above the rafters
silence sings
the sweetest song
I know

lovers wait
eternities
for one more living come –
passed between
our reasons to conceive

blessings
one –
the rest shall let
another breath surrendered
as standing close beneath –
the waters rise

rushing waves
of falling leaves –
wing’eds on the chimney
– sounds to me
the same
within these halls
of light

. . .

til faded ~

swoon

left the light
for someone there –
halfway down the meadow
glowed the path was
burned into the night

precious truth
of welcome here –
none the words for better
folded now as ribbon
to the vest

keep the warmth
of passions gone –
and bloodless autumn skies
frosted silhouette
above the grave

lay me down
the coming back –
stay the dark til faded
slip into my shadows
as the light

cherokee
and keetoowah –
barefoot maiden wakens
carved her dreams
within each
slanted verse

spin to yarn
these flutters of
mysteries becoming
sacrificed
to flame –
wing’ed reckoning
