how fragile
our returning –
for time to cease to be
where sorrows
wash an ocean to the sea
patterns of remembrance –
where moments fell
between
love was ever meant
to be
this way

as shells
along an ancient path
some distance from the shore
broken as the sailor
wandered home
tiny bones –
as silver fins
are written to each leaf
stories of a journey
never known

. . .

fit the same ~

sundaybest

of faded pearls
my grandma loved –
though where they came
uncertain
an unmarked box
the man brought down
one Sunday
after church

tied with dimestore string
proof
of someplace sweeter
another name for wearing
fit the same

as stockings
hats
and easter shoes
a blushing bride all over
reminded of a right
before her spring

. . .

rings ~

round about

in the space where once
a longing –
was nursed
a hungry cat
and edges there were left
to tell the world
of where the end
was ending –
who would tend the grass
and where the towels
were folded
with the grey

a rocking chair
and angry rings
to curse an ugly table
a crystal bowl
would hold your habits
well –
reminders of another
took my breath
for supper –
turned the bed
and never said
a thing

verses read
all over –
some I can’t pretend
are meant to hold
another fool
as I
forgotten to a season
passed me through
November –
cooled my brow
and left my longing
fire

. . .

carry me ~

beyond this night
of china plates
of fragile whispered dreams
teams of unseen verses
dot the sky

take me there
the morning
carried higher still
the lowest branch
where evergreen made home

burst my heart
with longing
gratitude for just –
tis all I know
of living
but to love

lock the gate
and clip the wick
tell them I was lost
found my way
rewritten –
a golden sycamore
– resurrected map
while I was sweeping
up the yard

made my way
found my way
somewhere still they listen
somewhere yet
– a violin at dusk

feed my cause
bleed these hands
mark my days to mayfly
but gather not
to sheets
of almost done

brush against
the aching –
where scattered now to names
– gentle souls
tethered by my own

carry me
the winter
to the hiding place of love
pick the tiny flowers
tie their hands
gentle as a breeze to bring
essence to a song –
baskets left for filling
on the porch

shatter me
the eastern ridge
wash for me an ocean
ten thousand silver fins –
a carousel
build for me
a nothing more
than places I have loved
but leave me not
to wish upon
a star already sailed

coming back
I swore one time
to find another way
but still I dream
beyond my dreams
recalled

. . .

Author’s Note: Sometimes words refuse to let me sleep.
I stir against the
silence, writing in the dark.

lexington_2012

grieve not
the last blue blade
of Kentucky
as years
where the rain fell upon
the reasons for staying
outnumber the stars
– weight to the heart
unconfessed

by the saying aloud
a giving to name
of ways now grown over
as one time I knew –
was proof of the falling
when all that was left
was an echo of days
gone between

breathing
returns me –
as seasons to home
will sit me a sun
at the edge of the sky
pastures made new
by the burning away
– rivers made wild
by our tears

. . .

just this far ~

surelythis

of places
just this far away –
as the northern edge
of an eastern night
where kentucky knew
of our verse
somehow –
did you know me then
as you know me
now

as a secret path
out beyond the night –
and a long way
back
where there never was
but a soul to free and a will to learn
what would come
undone –
in the turning

an empty field
brushes gold somewhere
as the leaning back
comes to moving on –
will our truth
be known –
to places here
will our names be hard
to remember

of another time
as our journey was –
with a sleeve of maps
folding back
in time
– a needle strong
knew the songs we’d trade
– were the stars
burned out
 by a wish we made

. . .

more than this ~

eighteen
not quite ready
for dreams to understand
books with pages turned
as words unbound
poured into the seeking
of mystery
returned –

between the suns
eyes were closed
as life begun

werepartofme

knew it well
another place
as real
made more than this
remembered
resurrected me again
scribbled as a page
of rightful circumstance
living lost –
would ever real
make sense

or daisies bloom
to die
against the moon

smoke rings
rising somewhere –
names to taunt
my tongue
are missed of times
whene’er my pillow warns
of mornings spread
to fingers –
curs’ed light
to find me here

counting rings
and humming –
songs no one can hear

. . .

mondays

of mondays
I’ve had many
some gone before
I woke –
took the paper
left the puzzle worked

burnt my favored candle
and cursed the grain of wood
became the bed –
one night
became my all

I’d never leave
no sense pretending
I would sell
these ragged sheets

who are you
and where’s the magic now

silence
makes me want to cry
laughter makes me horse
for helpless I am moved
to keep it all –

a dozen eggs
and one pound more of bacon
I won’t eat

twelve across
is not the word intended –
but everything
I love
has made me fit

. . .

somewhere I do

honeysuckle ribbons
are wrapped
as time with string
and squeezed against a plank
of aching red
dusted hallelujahs
are buried by the post
and rusted
to the latch
just like they said

we’d never make the papers
never knew our time
would end –
struggled with the map
unspoken shame –
as day old letters
fade into the memory of a box
– and photographs
don’t hold me
quite the same

a kiss
the taste as summer
a touch the same as true
gentle eyes
were watching me –
as I was watching you
like who would know
the stories
weren’t for telling
where we’d be –
or where we started over
might be here –
you came for me

as roads to trace
from east to west –
were moved as north I took
a ticket in my pocket
found me there
let me know
if e’er the stars
are moved from where
I loved –
as honeysuckle moments
are pulling
at my hair

. . .

another rise ~

beginnings

reach into
my waking –
where pages have been stuck
a sleeve of petals
held between my rhyme
guarded as the golden gilt
notes of scribbled
fame –
proof you were
another time I knew

verses
of pretention
seasons folded now –
are stored on shelves
I hardly reach
for more
tho once I thought
to understand
the leaving as you do
longing left
to pages
I can’t lose

hearts were free
to gather these –
graces of permission
time was ne’er to blame
for where we lingered
here a bit
save to flight
the dream of dreams –
another rise to set
burned me into orange
– lay me back
in ruby red
