fragrant
each becoming to the earth –
where once was died
pain of falling forward
into bliss
still the tender bower
of an ever-lasting love
wishes mine eternal
to exist
as breath aware
of something more
rushing through the trees
sweet perfume
of wildest muscadine
wisdom of the weakest
stories passing on –
wills the heart remember
every time
the soul was full
as light so bright
betrayed our sense of loss
held beyond the moment
of goodbye
wrapped in sheets
of wilderness –
tempted by the stars
dare I dream
and never question why
the flowers bloom
unnoticed –
the mockingbird to lust
as wonder wakes
unwilling to forget
tells the story just begun
life beyond this dream –
love is light becoming
bliss awaiting yet

swayed beneath
the mistletoe
my daddy brought me
Sunday –
was wound atop
a cedar tree
and rescued by his bow
was not a place
for ribbons
just the scent
of something magic
a life so sure
of living
would find in me
a kiss

in the silent stir
of breathing –
a universe is born
baby blue and wrapped
in melodies
of lullabys and lovers
long ago we knew
the coming back
would lead us to the throne
to pages unintended
by the passing of an age
letters folded
sweetly out of sight
names and dates
across and through
division of our sorrows
scribbled to the margins
by regret
daughters
sons and keepers
waiting long the night
rivers play the songs
of welcome home
polished by direction
turning still the flow
where east meets west
evermore is gone
tales of almost tempted
and where they curse us still
visions of tomorrow
fall away –
becoming now the future
of some distant yesterday –
we willed ourselves
into the love we leave
pages turning over
leaves of crimson browned
twilight sits a diamond
on the grey –
messages delivered
of somewhere else we go –
moments stretched beyond
the reach of time

of these
and no more
I would swear
my allegiance –
and let not another tear fall
would pass unafraid
to the edge of the knife
with courage to suffer
for all
restless to wander
the last one arrived
to places I already know
held as a child
whispered a lover
of somewhere I passed
a long time ago
were doubt
and regret –
of sorrows to sew
shared of a vision unseen
written to secrets
will live in my stead
and curse not
the hours between
my heart
keeps apart –
moments so dear
forever decided
as stars without shame
fell not the distance
of years into light –
or splintered by thought
into flame

in secret
contemplation
the snow is piling high
and every ounce of oil
has burned
to grey
resemblance to our destinies
is surely not our fault
we took such care
to wipe the proof
away
of miracles
there must have been
more than one
remember when
convincing me of something more
than signs
but the book is left
unopened –
I’m sure these aren’t my cards
the joker laughs
til I can scarcely sleep
bury me with potions
leave the window
cracked
and when the birds are roosting
let them be
cut the trees
the young will thrive
and when I’m grey
the best survived
a dozen more
than the summers might
have saved
to winters
we are taken
the hunter without grace
when everything is turned inside
to white –
the sacred lace
the first
to say I’m sorry
the last to say pretend
the fields are bare
and soon the time to go
remembering
the spring is come
as the reddest buds return
I’ll put my apron back
and time will slow
wrapped inside a promise
with nothing much between
the magic lent to circumstance –
the sweet desire
of dreams
cowboys sewn to flannel
each bittersweet regret
shadows fade
to scars the shade of night
illusion of a moment stilled
by fireflies and letters
tender indiscretions
to take the place
of light

of choices
long forsaken
to the wilderness of age –
and the chance to know again
was almost gone
when in the still
of wanting –
a time I found my way
and leaned into eternities
with you
unnoticed complication
to dwell on
might have beens –
had stars been lined
along another blue
had waters
risen higher than
the mark beneath my stone
or weighted more than wishes
to my skies
dreamers swear
to know me well
of words that fall so easy
spreading in their wake
my mystery
years
of almost silent
tears I never cried
tho rarely now –
I speak of you aloud
just the same
as somewhere else
I let my passions loose –
a place already gathered
to my soul
verses float
the smokey gale
dragons roost the cedars
words denied
are coming round
again
. . .

grant me this
endearment
more than smoke
when nights grow cold
as ages come an end
to winter howls
give me strength
an unseen will –
to ride the darkest hour –
would ever there be times
without you here
wished me well
of thoughts to dwell
and ripples
ink shall marry –
conformed was never made
as verse to rhyme
sorrow works
her merry way –
as stillness
fills the forest
nightbirds spread the dawn
along the way
carry me
as breath beyond –
without a name to limit
skies the shade of roses
mid July
speak my name
as silent sighs
calm the winds of autumn
seek me now
alive in every thing
morning waits
with stubborn will
to cheat the night of wonder
magic stirs
beside the path –
begs the candle burn

as thought to a moment
lotus gone blue
spinning my soul out of sight
love clings to wonder
the hand without hold
as warmth swept aside
when lonely
is come
as rush to the willows
the breezes of May
have carried
to spirit the secrets we saved
eastern to rise
as a once faithful star
come softly to nights
where I lay
were not for the one
to know of me now –
ages and graces undone
pull me beside
as stories retold
and I’ll fold to tears
every time
garner me truth
I can’t say I’ll know
tho once held the name
of another I knew
places somewhere –
they whisper of me –
as lotus too long
letting go

were gifted love
such sweet embrace
of light to word –
and patterns raised
across and through
these onyx skies
as learning writ by lullabyes
as living sworn
to souls brand new
and seasons
I was come for you
on velvet tiptoes
down the board –
as whispers – not a one
I heard
of other lives –
my sore regret
was not for loss or places met –
but hours spent without a kiss
remembered well
the choice for bliss
one day of all
I’ve known would bind
my heart to yours –
as verse with rhyme
would weave the night
as daylight does –
renewed by faith
unmade by love
