slip the ring
from round my heart
curs’ed day for trading
so fragile now
our leaving to begin
take of mine
the cedar chest
fourteen sets of wishes
carried from the attic
to the curb
dare me not
to suffer long
with silver bells and rattles
sheets
to match the curtains
I don’t care
set me sail
with dignity –
starch the winter white
and paper now
along our only hall
destiny awaits
the sun
where once Kentucky yearned
for linens kept
in cardboard –
promise in the barn
. . .
