of these ancient bones
and dirt poor roads –
paths denied me
leaving
were none to find
of left behind
awaiting to atone

as softly as a morning swoon
fingers to the curtains –
were lifted high the veil
of almost gone

speak to me of symentry
and places not forgotten –
leaning walls
and papers golden pale
spin for age the legend
of where we love forever
as distance I might come
to find you still

silver leaf
and poems started
now their jagged voice
betrayed –
light for me
the candle
was meant for kinder days
and where I was
unknowing – set me free

plant the seed
and crush the tiller –
seal the cross
with scarlet woes
mend the fence before I wander
back into –
the ways I know

. . .

this morning
the driveway was covered
with letters
held a bit long by the sun
reminders of others
sweet as october
and dreams kept
for seasons to come

hands were unfolded
open and anxious
to catch every tear
as they fell
mystical dance
of reason returning
words without meaning
(or none we could tell)

shades of a lifetime
pressed to a moment
bound into pages
of memory wrote
sealed with a kiss
as ten thousand others
would wait us for passing
as maple to smoke

as poetry dried
by inkstain to wishes
thought gone the way of the wind
infinite proof
that love will sustain us
out past the places ~
we wander again

forgotten somehow
the seasons since passed
snowflakes and junebugs
are gathered to light
warmed by a day
(another we came)
haunted by leaves
kept real by the night

swirling (these gifts)
of red burned to gold
lessons we learned of
surrender ~
comfort me now
as life spills the ground
let go
let love ~
remember

of silences
unbroken
by the restlessness of truth
~ fingers curved to pieces
of my soul

where feminine
these ashes blow
around my thoughts to gather
breathed into the places
I am whole

as given name
another one
as Mary came before
and swept the corners clean
of circumstance

faith beyond
her grieving ~
still her fragrance looms
as secrets spill the night
with tenderness

in cords of white
the willing page
awaits the gentle hand
as strained
between the brothers
falling down

if ever this
the moment was
to understand our ways
~ as thorns were burst
to blossom
in our stead

counted wings ~

nineteen twenties
silver dollar –
and dolls without their clothes
quilts were stitched
and still they tore away

coal had streaked
the papered walls –
as black the skirted dawn
hands to work –
fell the night
to pray

kittens cried beneath
the porch –
lifetimes moving forward –
as tempted by our fate
to sweet desire

crooked shelves
and hand-me-downs
as starched the sunday morning
smelled of breeze
and counted wings
of fire

twilight pressed
against the day –
bring the children home
across the fields –
and places lay between

mothers stood
with aprons tied
just beyond the lantern
mouthed a prayer of thanks
for saints unseen

hearts were tucked
and souls protected –
e’er the night be lost
or heaven break
before the early rise

hands were making
shadows –
across a flowered spread
as living held our nights
together –
long before our sighs

untangled ~

apart from everything she was
tis more she sits for dinner –
and stays with me
beyond the early show
sweaters born
the scent of moths –
and gems beyond the sparkle
combs that never knew
awaited there

along a stretch of cypress
polished by a wish –
and caught up in the magic
of her eyes –
a fleeting smile
a flash of grace
before the twilight faded
and trapped as she
within the mirrored glass

memories
much more than most –
crystal jars and perfume
shaded now
by aging faded grey
perfect pearls untangled
by the loss of one
the other
and wrapped beneath a net
of window’s wear

decades since we noticed
her words were almost gone
ink displaced by tears
and linen worn
a tragedy of letting be
the music of her voice –
so very few
are left to know
her song

cedar boxes
and old shiftrobes –
blankets more than winter
left beside the hopes
of yesterday
powdered white
the morning comes –
in traces of gardenia

brushed to gold
the weaver’s paradise

hush ~

pour me the promise
of winter returning
of catfish spawned deep
in the lily pad spring

of change
when the sky blazes red
as an onion ~
and the lowly wheat bows
to the breeze

gather me ~
tulips
from six o’clock shadows
of words barely formed
melt like honey with mine

hush
don’t you worry
stay in this moment
forever ~ I noticed
has come for us now

as ever
this always –
I see you as certain
to rise on the morning
with rain on the roof

stir me with questions
(I thought you were going)
and make me a photograph
to sit on my soul

sliding through doorways
(feet barely touching)
chasing a whisper
to beds seldom made

laughter speaks volumes
as echoes of loving
anchor the moon
to the edge of the night

sworn him to secret
with tales of creation
and hope for the ‘morrow
(we can’t comprehend)

more than this magic
hands softly moving ~
to the sound of eternity
falling in place

somebody’s baby ~

Denim works better
than satin to soothe me –
t-shirts and bobby socks
shoes I’ve outgrown.
Coffee stirs feelings
of times I spent running –
and I don’t need a sign
to find my way home.

Briar and sassafras –
two kinds of lover.
The one who keeps count
and the one who won’t care –
what’s on for breakfast
of worlds unforgiven.
The roof is still leaking
but it’s warm enough here.

For all that I’ve written
there are pages still waiting –
like the space on the dresser
pearls never laid.
Fruit jars and masons –
tho nothing much matches.
Lacey white linens
I’ve given away.

There are spoons
in the pantry
and uneven tapers –
gates rusted shut
by the way of the bed.
Old maps are kept by the door
in a basket –
and a box full of memory
sleeps neath my head.

Some I can’t touch
for forgetting the reasons –
I kept them at all
of the things that I can’t.

Heaven gets lost
at the mention of leaving –
and there are acres
of promise nobody owns.
Berries grow wild
by the fence (barely standing)
and summer plays hell
with my soul.

Jasmine and lavender
three kinds of daisies –
dried to the line
my blankets to bless.
Hardwood and heartache
are nobody’s business –
as a moment of weakness
to silence confessed.

Life all around
and most barely living –
who I am (someone)
with none to approve.
I’ll sit the night out
as the porch light is fading –
laugh til I cry
and talk til I’m blue.

From the place of my pillow
a view of forever –
and thirty six stars light the ways
I’ve become.

Was a time that I worried
what was thought – what was fated –
and traded (sometimes)
what of me (best) belonged.
But there’s more here
than being (somebody’s baby)
and letting go gave me
a time to hold on.
To what of me mattered
(tadpoles and twilight) –
truths to remember
long after I’m gone.

I rock when I weep
and sing when it’s raining –
I walk when I dream
past the woods (far enough).
Grace never fails
to remind me (of someone)
the girl that I was –
wears the woman I love.

before ~

Who was I before
(I wonder
now and then).
Was I more than this
or less than most –
a trace of ‘might have been’.
Were my lips the same
when spoke your name –
did you hang on every word
or close your ears
(to hide your heart) –
should e’er the truth
be heard.

(I wonder)
when you hold me –
do you feel the same (inside).
A fluttering of osprey
a deep and growing tide –
or something less
(you’ve lost your way).
A place to be
instead –
hands above the table –
boots beneath the bed.

When offered life –
would just enough
be more than you could bear.
Of love (the same as breathing)
shall grieve for you
(I swear).
Misguided dreams
when nights were long –
forgot the need to pray
for morning light
(returned as love) –
to wash your fears away.

Was nothing
you remember –
as the same you were (made more).
Surrendered every memory
of who I was
before.

wishing well ~

came a thief
who took the mountain
took away the peaceful stream
gave a silver plated nickel –
to the beggar
for his dreams

took the ways for which we wandered
left us nothing for the fight
took the heart (was once so tender)
pulled it (pleading)
from the light

was a thief
who took of pardons –
spoke in tongues (we strained to hear)
promised wine (a crystal fountain)
somewhere far
(not far from here)

spoke of highways
thru the heavens –
told of trust beyond the veil
sold us courage from a bottle
jaded cup (a wishing well)

from those moments
came another –
one more chance to turn away
another dollar for our wishes
stars we loved –
at once betrayed

for the hope of more
than vision –
righteous want
for more than will
took the last of mortal conscience
lifetimes passed us –
standing still

came a thief
in prophet’s clothing –
golden robes (of fated sun)
took of breath –
the soul’s impression
left behind the empty one

For this moment
of moments –
eternity waited
giving us room just to be.
Circles now spreading
our fate to discover –
but always we sit
with sweet memory

of the days just before
in places we wandered –
in joys that we shared
(none can take those away).
Tis the way we were guided
by stars barely crossing –
as years will remember
a smile
not the day

or the season, the tears
(so demanding).
Just a face bound to grace
we might never deserve –
(but we do)
and we will
for we love without wanting
more than this
that we keep
in the stores of our heart.

Can’t be lost on the way
to the one
we become –
or replaced by some other
(we don’t understand).

Love remains
in the truths
we leave in our passing –
years from now
just a word

– just a smile.

Author’s Note: Written for a friend who struggles to understand
an unfamiliar path, and hurting words from those she thought
she knew best. Ultimately, we choose what we keep. The rest – we set free.
