hereuare

despite my hesitation
I’ve discovered where you were
e’en now my fingers
roll o’er aching boards
fumble with the presence
of something
I can’t see –
takes my breath
and skips my heart a beat
of consequence
I’ve known to curse
the way that time concedes
tho maybe this –
my way of missing me
an evermore
I’ll never know
to ease my hurts this way
tracing now the tender chords
where once your music
played

going

of worth
I have no season
no story left to tell
of roads I walked –
of lives beyond the veil
of streets
unnamed to history
a touch
recalls me still
where all I’ve known
of loving is revealed
into the page
where shadows fall
night birds weep and storm
into the swell where black
the locust swarm
with memory
of where I lay
and secrets I embraced
flannel sheets
are forests wrapped in lace
as once I was
remembered me
for reasons I’m not sure
kept within the circles
ancient sight
mystery of passion –
my wilderness afire
wings are raised
immortal to the night

. . .

Author’s Note: I’ve spent many a day
in search of an image for this, and have none to
show.  Only this.  Close your eyes – yes, that’s
the one.

knewmewhen

for years
I thought to leaving
some rush into the night
would heal my heart –
and bear me to the light
a silver moth
of aging lace
surrendered to the flame
circles ’round me
gathering
the same

as was before
some other me –
some witness I can’t speak
of love I know
would beckon me –
beyond the realm of sleep
as stones were laid
beside me there –
as purple paper worn
now and then –
are light
before the morn

with wonder to the reasons
why I keep
what I can’t find
when all I’ve known
is leaving you
behind
peacocks march
a broken porch –
smoke rings chill the dark
lines are drawn –
and still I run across

the moment
of permission –
the corner where I stood
wishing you
and swearing you no good
but for me
a truth unspoken
gives pause most every time
I find the gate left open
while making up
my mind

did you know

when I am lost
to find me –
along the ways I roam
soaring past the rocks –
beyond the stars
counting points
defied to strains
of wilderness I keep
floating without chord
into the dark
laced as silver minnows
willow tied to elm
evergreen reminding me
come down –
wishes now are troubled
sailors seldom knew
where the skies –
and where the shore
was bound

nearasnow

hope was born on a windy day
at seven p.m.
your sudden smile
illuminated the fog
of my ailing soul
heartache was an ever darkening bruise
that starlight could never heal…
your hands still try to work miracles
but you disappear as often
as moonlight on a stormy night
and through the ebb and tide of my need
you ride the waves of my salvation
like a pirate
caught between lust for rich horizons
and a part-time philosopher
in love with ideals

stirring

from deep ocean blue clarity
light allows curiosity to float
to a place of calm and nothingness
after the luring of promises
by so many others unaware
of the marvels held
within their own hearts…
looking long at the sun’s rays
salted and belly offered skywards
maybe the jealous moon
will be the chosen guide
into the excited commotion
of a common marketplace
where among other offerings
hope is for sale within the fleeting smile
of a green-eyed jewelry vendor
convinced that a woven leather bracelet
is the object necessary
for quiet meditation –
to cross the boundary
between suffering
and illumination

. . .

to wonder ~

yellow

how am I to wonder
and still
the morning comes
fresh as tears
to grace the baby green
petals begged to open
sleepy eyes awake
eager now to hear
the story told

of distant fields
and gardens fair –
winded wills and worry –
forests drawn in aprons
of a song
played within the stillness
of one more time
I’ve gone
far beyond the touch
that is the dawn

how is now
I’ve traveled
beyond the reach of dreams –
beyond the safe abode
of tethered night
walked with stars
and tripped my way
into another light –
brushed aside the veil
to free my soul

safe

of stories
long rewritten –
to a page
that won’t be kept
secrets folded soft
into the crease
lines to rub
where ink gave out –
fingers without memory
trace the ragged edge
of yesterday

sweet the sound
of almost sung –
names
and dates
and places
sunlight burning
tender through the pines
washes now
the winter –
a moment yet we stay
turned the bed
to face the southern
skies

letters
I’ve been writing
saved my name a place –
walked between my dreams
a mile with you
worried not
the path to choose
or what of time shall fill –

a story
meant for telling
kept for me
the end

. . .

findmestill

a gentle boy
tho no one knew
the path he must have made
wondered more than I
to why he came
with silver minnow leeches –
carved against a rock
slipped into the places
I remain

somewhere springs
an ancient tide
of endless crystal beaches
last I heard
the earth was come
around
to see your way
would understand
words I never said-
footprints glowing red
in sheets of clay

bide your time
take of mine
the reasons we remember
vine was strung from evergreen
as once I loved you
more –
penning notes
forever wrote –
to slips of oak and willow
poems came to rhyme
against the day

traded me the sunrise –
forgiven
us the night –
one more story
whispers us away

wonder rests
in sheets
of softest denim

would steal away
the sorrows
from the night

guards the road
we failed to take –
some other magic morning

streamed
beyond the reaches
of our plight
