choices

polished path
of pearl and jasper –
footprints gone the way
of wave
swirling spires
of ancient winters
imprint of the first
snowflake

anguished depths
of seaward canyons –
creeks are searching
still the proof
cross the meadows
through the mountains –
stormclouds ride
a steely truth

of early breath
the ocean thunders
as backwards flows
the virgin stream
life is passed
the way of reaching –
into the birth
of polished dreams

beyond the scars
of venus –
I find you there each night
beneath the pines
along some silver shore
wearing names
I never knew –
(cept for one I keep)
 there we live
 as there we love
the more

for every life
was passed between
for every word unsaid
tides are breaking –
echoes spill the dark
as comfort o’er the longing
for one more day (or two)
leaves are falling
(rainbows)
 souls into the light

beyond and still
within this realm
where dreaming (my embrace)
time is but a fleeting
thought to be
guarded by my pillow
worn the blankets mute –
cedars rise
(as altars) to the sea

of sweet abode
(o tender mine)
tis not so far away
could measure less
the countless times I’ve known
recalled to life
another there –
beyond the reach of tides
stars (forgot to shining)
still carry me
to home

. . .

my best ~

resolution

I’ll call you
in the morning
when there’s all day to forget
the ease with which
my words are lost again
– the almost
didn’t say it
of another time I knew
yet spoke so soft
my secrets bruised
your skin

I’ll call you when
the sun is turned
warm against my face –
forsaken every chance
to move along
discovering
the only path
– tho how
I’m meant to wonder
with nothing sure –
sleep can’t hold me long

I’ll call you over coffee
and do my best
to breathe

moments touching eternity

some day –
and there
forever speaks

in words we understand
pardoned by our differences –
true to one command

ignoring every reason
to betray these ties we own
when given one
our brother still –
tis more than flesh and bone

the sparrow
in his crowded roost
the locust just below
creatures all
but beating yet

a melody we know

was breathed to each
to make us one –
 restores our faith to see
beyond the strain of living
is here –
eternity

in golden boughs
and tender haunts
our legacy begins –
 as life beyond our living
comes the story
without end

forgotten curse
of seasons passed
in bitterness
and pain
gathered now
with earnest –
the reasons to remain

as part
of all –
within this grace
of places we define
no greater love
than giving –
shall tend the soul
divine

proof

frosted
white of winter leaves
silence in the kitchen
where cluttered there with dishes
on the floor

survivors
of an evening past
how slow our recognition
of places held
before
the coffee spilt

splattered
to the ashes –
crystal cigarettes
are careful in their telling
of our lies

maybe
when the sun is poured
new across the vinyl –
we’ll wander here
to pick the pieces up

forgotten how it hurt
curses now gone colder –
tears have dried
beneath
the habit’s stain

were asked
I can’t remember
the colors of the day
or what I knew before
of what remains

was Tuesday
and the skies so blue
I can’t recall another
felt the same
when flush against
my soul

were moments
but a moment gone –
eternities decided
as fingers brushed
across a great
divide

planets moved
(or did they)
who can really say
where the stars awaited –
where they fell

forsaken by
the choice to be –
where one
the other started
taken as the vapor
into flame

were asked
I can’t remember
the color of the night
or what became
of where I left
my heart

slow me
 butterflies
who lived to love
the trees of mexicali –
are floating now
the appalachian trail

stronger winds
are blowing
northern candles west –
as southern nights
 are pushed against
the dawn

rivers rush
beyond their fame
black the velvet feathers
are found beyond
the memories of stone

twilight winks
 above the tides
where once a culture crumbled
sands are set
again
by ancient hands

…

places I knew better ~

once i knew

before
and still
the truth becomes
another way I knew –
counted by the blossoms
I was seed
longer held
the coming back
for one more dream (or two)
paths have worn
as now my lonely bones

in memory
recall the cool
of places I knew better
the grace of summer storms
and winter rye
where bliss was only starting
weaved the vines
as one –
lines the same as leaves
across my hands

of ancients
they are stilled
beyond the purple crest
tho deep within her breast
the braver sleep
lives were come
and love endured –
or so they say
in leaving
burning back a flame
I dare not quench

starry nights
are all I know
of what remains forever –
threads are worn
tho not beyond repair
whispers cling
to autumn weeds
with will
for one more harvest

one more path
becoming –
long the ways
to home

ALMOST
February slivers
of seasons yet to warm.
Yellow clumps
of almost
buttercups –
naked damp foretelling
a pattern
of goodbyes.
Starlings burst
from towers –
stretched between.
Darkness sings
of January –
wrapped in frigid light.

moments

caught to briar
by leaving –
as every word to one –
cursed the locks
beneath
the selfless night

paths of cold
as longing spread
down the rungs of time
splayed with truths
the poet left –
as proof of our
demise

wherein
for death
we traded
when chose of all –
to be
lessons hewn
together
by the soul

write again
of this one more
we passed
on ways familiar –
as longing
took of trust
to let us in

anxious plea
the keys to work –
as willed these stones
to polish
shadows slip
between the rocks
where once we hid
our love
