thisclose

for times
I never took the time
days I let
get by
nights I slept
beyond the reach
of dreams
love I held
a moment long
candles blossom bright
paper plates
as graces
have become
a hundred years
from getting back
eighteen more
than then
pages bent
against me in the back
roads I know
from walking home
slower
than the sun

seasons not
the heavier
for counting

showme

will
and I wonder
to places unknown
forgotten the weeds –
my way back to home
a secret
unspoken
by lovers and thieves
echoed by crickets
knees
touching knees
a hymnal
of feathers
as light through the pines
souvenirs left by
the rain
where was I going
who waits the dawn
with promise
of heaven
to love me
again

Author’s Note: I love the woods and I love the shore. A couple of years back, while sitting on my porch, I closed my eyes and raised my face to the sun. But the breeze, he told me something more. In that moment, I noticed the song that is the fluttering of leaves. It is the same as the waves on the shore. I wonder who knew it first, but wonder not at the love that allowed them to share it.

how tender
these blessings of
sapphire and pearl
oceans singing
of leaves

comein

someone made mention
of rings on the table
habits worn clean
to the bone
a rusted out latch
keeps no one from leaving
a whispered reminder
of reasons
to stay
where the fences
need mending
and water runs cool
sprung from a river
two miles ‘neath the porch
we watched the sun rise
another
one day
when spoke of intention
promise undone
by a change in the
weather
warm cotton gowns
I dared not replace
with the pretense of love
the essence of summer
left on the line
and a glass
of the best I knew how

homeagain

failing now
the chilly grip
of cold
the winter fingers
are warmed to life
by memories of spring
a blushing pink
umbrella
is refuge for the worn
while orchards wait
the hum of honeybees
nature wills
the letting go
with promises of time
as black
the berry wakes
beside the thorn

. . .

Author’s Note: The telling of Spring is everywhere this week. Just yesterday I pulled to the roadside and counted 24 deer in the field near my house. Sunlight sits in pools where ice has only recently melted, as babies remember the way back to places they’ve never been. *sigh*

graces
drift a winter home
snowflakes dance about
caught in ancient webs
of holding on
a lover’s breath
reminds the earth
of hope – a sweeter spring
familiar lust
as blossoms yet asleep
wrapped in leaves
of marigold –
november warned about
a sudden chill
and paths of
silent white

thoughtyouhere

for a while
before I knew you well
were ways I walked alone
lonely nights
curved against the clay
lullabies
to only self
of sometimes stories knew
of places I was going
everywhere and
faraway

beyond
the reach
of one more rise –
one more bitter chill
a sacrifice remembered
in my bones
an aged need
to fill my gut
crooked boards and wine
a place beyond
these places
I am known

where once I stood
on tender soles
and watched the dream released
above the lake
in whispers soft and clear
a breath
I scarce remember how
a moment all the same –
turning back the night
to find you
here

pay no mind
to the weathered boards
paint replaced
by decay
steps worn down
as proof of a life
shutters
broken and gray

of places
I am
if ever was once
a memory
shining and new
windows undimmed
by the breaking apart
glisten with love
shining thru

certainme

once
and I was here before
watching from the window
on a piece of land
and thirteen stones
by name

thirty steps
from screen to gate
sixteen more to leaving
headlights swept
above a gravel plan

dusty now
to keepsake hopes
by one of me forgotten
crayola words
tho who to recognize
the shape of words
spilling verse
counting back to heaven

crooked boards
remember me
a poem undefined

letmego
morning
and I hear
soul in the rain
dancing the two step
on tin

shimmering light
as rainbows
I colored
of faraway places
retracing
again

soft recollection
of kiss
and caress
storms in the forest
– dreams
we begin

branches
are touching
where music still plays
a murmur
of longing
let loose
to the wind

whoIamnow

destiny sleeps
in sheets of november
a provision
of summers long passed
bested in shades –
a blush yet becoming
the same as was once
you saw me
this way

kissed by the shadows
and left
on the morning
wanting for nothing
but another first time
returning as blossom
unremembered
to falling

as thistle to reason –
longing divine

let me to find you
when snow
bends the cedars
as wintertime warmed
to a place
by my name
take of my always
one more hereafter
sleep where I’m dreaming
with memories
of may
