red

begonia
the color of Revlon 09
last year’s kiss
almost gone
brushed to the suede
green gloves of remiss
ached
where steps ran
flush with the porch
not long
til all we have left
of the winter
is a place where he stood
in the snow
peering through windows
while inside
we glowed
fat with the memory
of blossom
to come

. . .

cool before falling ~

always I am
marigold taxi
I remember the fever
was blushed on the berries
– thorns to my skin
breathless the trek
to a place
in the forest –
where sworn you would come
to claim me again

for every transgression –
another
I love you –
was consequence
weighed in moments
so sweet
hands spoke in quiet
of distances over –
where words came
unraveled
in mid-summer heat

the timbers
were prying –
as angels stood
watching
the giving of graces
one afternoon long
calmed by the weaving
of light through the branches
– a cool before falling
as the world
slumbered on

. . .

keepers ~

mary

long skinny fingers
reach for the sky
swaying in ultimate
bliss –

forgotten the spring
when clothes
where the thing
they bend without burden
of blossom
or leaf

challenged again
for stories they keep
sweet golden rings
in the dark

crossed
and made straight
wrapped each around
another one day
might have fell

delicate song
comes alive
in the breeze –
as harp finds the string
without bow

. . .

dreams we know by heart ~

eternities reaching

beyond the reach
of wisdom  –
longing makes a plan
and scratches there
our name
in blocks of time
given more
than giving back
letting go
to let
choice before the choosing
comes again

beneath the want
of wandering –
are dreams we know by heart
echoes of a once
familiar song –
played on silken chords
ringing without sound –
when wished upon a moon
we couldn’t see

before and since
of all we are –
reversing now the tides
are tears –
we thought were washing
us away
come the sigh
we breathed into –
matching with our own
blessings pass
unnoticed
to our light

withering

down from the city
what a pleasant surprise
to find you at home
on my porch –
drinking the last cup of coffee
I wonder
what comforts you now
the same as before

wishing you back
and chewing on pride –
leaning to moments
forgotten to miss
I’ll do your laundry
and know of your eggs –
how you like them
I don’t
but I keep them
for this

soap
the color
of new england roses –
sweaters and denim
have softened with age
habits have
taken me
longer for letting
go of the pieces –
a half written page

sealed to a life
I can barely remember
was a time
before –
I was me
spinning in circles
drunken illusion
of where – and of when
we were going
to be

pardon the mess
had I known you were coming –
might have baked you
a cake –

or burned the house down

nest

tangled
I’ve been tortured
by the want to tend it all
to leave my lowly mark
upon the world
soothe the heart
and stop the baby crying
for a while

to save the well –
and let the curtains
fall

trusted
with the harvest
buried with the seed
and watered
me the blessings
of the soil
waited
wailed
and wondered
was the first to know
their names
marigold
and venus –
righteous silver
queen

make my bed
of needles –
quartz and lazy pine –
move the night to make
the stars align
stitch my coat with passions
weaved along the way –
when wished I more
than e’er the world
could pay

ransom for a kiss ~

choices

poppies grew
one august –
flush against the barn
and someone said
they saw a man
asleep out on the lawn

were whispers
from the kitchen –
tho no one held the proof
of where the stories
started –
while searching
for the truth

a busted fence
and thirty head
of cattle –
more or less
babies crying
 somewhere now –
 for longing unconfessed

separate beds
and darkened rooms
places kept apart –
ten thousand miles
and eighteen steps
worn between their hearts

how many sorrows
offered
as ransom for a kiss
touch reserved for evermore
was never meant
for this

a slight of girl
to question –
how to know
when love was real –
would wonder
just how long the wait
for broken hearts
to heal

…

dreamed awake ~

birth

was a gentle breeze
half blowing
and almost there a tune
of saving grace
and love denied a name
mysteries of maple
crush the fragile lawn
while others cling
to circumstance
brittle hangers-on

of seasons
without mercy –
glories climbed between
the crooked limbs –
tho knew not how to grow
while just beneath
the stutter breathes –
stillness
dreamed awake
as blossoming to heal
the patient soul

was the bluest sky
a chill withstood –
the want for more
than light
sparrows swam above
a perfect day
would walking me around
remove the wonder
or lead me past the edges
of understanding come
in years beyond
would think of you
this way

. . .

and mandolins ~

swoon

build a nest
above my door
and I won’t make you move
already there
is family on the porch
feathered friends
and mandolins
breast to breast
to stone –
twilight takes
whatever
I confess

stitch a coat
from verses wrote –
letters to the trees
are lying now in wait
beneath my bed
sealed with ruby smudges
such a perfect shade
of kiss –
willed to rhyme
made silent by a sigh

. . .

of roads
without a ways to go
and miles against the heavens –
silver ladles dripping
now with stars

whispers wrapped in reddest clay
and someone waiting
somwhere
with open arms –
another faraway

of stops along
the getting there –
postcards from the journey
a name or two
and someday I won’t care

hands to warm
against my night –
two bucks more than ever
I thought you’d be
returning for me here

dying vines
and twisted rose –
graces saved for leaving
what more
the time to waste
with letting go

were circumstance
for coming back –
across the fields of wanting
to lie against
my restlessness –
and know the ways
I came
